Modification has been made to TiO2 thin film to improve the wettability and the absorption of light. The sol-gel spin coating method was successfully used to synthesize GO/TiO2 thin films using a titanium (IV) isopropoxide (TTIP) as a precursor. Different amounts of polyethylene glycol (PEG) (20 to 100 mg) were added into the parent sol solution to improve the optical properties and wettability of the GO/TiO2 thin film. The effect of different amounts of PEG was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) for the phase composition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for microstructure observation, atomic force microscopy (AFM) for the surface topography, ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry (UV-VIS) for the optical properties and wettability of the thin films by measuring the water contact angle. The XRD analysis showed the amorphous phase. The SEM and AFM images revealed that the particles were less agglomerated and surface roughness increases from 1.21 × 102 to 2.63 × 102 nm when the amount of PEG increased. The wettability analysis results show that the water contact angle of the thin film decreased to 27.52° with the increase of PEG to 80 mg which indicated that the thin film has hydrophilic properties. The optical properties also improved significantly, where the light absorbance wavelength became wider and the band gap was reduced from 3.31 to 2.82 eV with the presence of PEG.

In this work, TiO2thin films were prepared by a sol-gel spin coating method on glass slide, stainless steel 304 and silicon wafer substrates. The thin films were annealed at different temperatures at ambient atmosphere. The effect of substrates and annealing temperatures on microstructure, surface morphology and hydrophilicity of the films were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and water contact angle measurement, respectively. The Raman spectra indicated that the annealed TiO2thin films (at 550 °C) coated on stainless steel and silicon wafer exhibited anatase structure. The contact angle of all samples decreased with increasing the UV-irradiation time and annealing temperature.

Y3+ doped TiO2 coatings were successfully prepared on glass slide substrates. The phase structure, optical properties，microstructure and surface properties of the coatings were characterized by using XRD, FT-IR, UV-vis and SEM. The photoinduced super-hydrophilicity and photocatalytic activity of the films were evaluated by the water contact angle measurement and photocatalytic oxidation of Rhodamine B in air, respectively. The results indicated that the doping of Y3+ into TiO2 could improve the hydrophilicity and photocatalytic activity, and TiO2 thin films doped with Y3+ at 2-4 at.% and heat-treated at 450 oC were of super-hydrophilicity. The optimal Y3+ content for the photocatalytic activity was 4 at.% and larger film thickness was helpful to reduce the contact angle of the composite films.

Vanadium and nitrogen co-doped TiO2(TiO2:(V, N)) thin films were fabricated by sol–gel method. Crystal structure, surface morphology, chemical composition and absorption edge of the thin films were characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and UV-Vis spectroscopy techniques, respectively. Photocatalytic activity of all thin films were evaluated by measuring decomposition rate of methylene blue solution under visible light irradiation. The water contact angle analyzer was used to measure water contact angle on the film. The results indicate that absorption edge of TiO2:(V, N) thin films shifts to visible region. All co-doped TiO2 samples show higher visible light photocatalytic activity than undoped TiO2 and single-element-doped TiO2 counterparts. The best TiO2:(V, N) thin film can decompose about 90% MB solution and gets super wet state after 150[Formula: see text]min under compact light irradiation.

A robust superhydrophobic organosilica sol-gel-based coating on a cotton fabric substrate was successfully fabricated via a cost-effective one-step method. The coating was prepared by modification of silica nanoparticles with siloxane having long alkyl chain that allow to reduce surface energy. The coating on cotton fabric exhibited water contact angle of 151.6°. The surface morphology was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, and surface chemical composition was measured with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Results showed the enhanced superhydrophobicity that was attributed to the synergistic effect of roughness created by the random distribution of silica nanoparticles and the low surface energy imparted of long-chain alkane siloxane. In addition, the coating also showed excellent durability against washing treatments. Even after washed for 30 times, the specimen still had a water contact angle of 130°, indicating an obvious water-repellent property. With this outstanding property, the robust superhydrophobic coating exhibited a prospective application in textiles and plastics.

Pure and Y-doped TiO2 thin films are prepared on glass by sol-gel method. Tetrabutyl titanate was used as Ti precursors. The chemical composition, structure and properties of TiO2 thin films are characterized by XRD, FT-IR, UV-Vis and Optical Contact Angle Measuring Instrument. Their photocatalytic performances were studied in detail by the methylene blue degradation model. The results show that the crystalline phase of Y2Ti2O7 is formed and the phase transformation from anatase to rutile is restrained when Y is doped in the TiO2 thin films. However, with the continuous increase in calcination temperature, its photocatalytic activity decreases, because the anatase will transform to the rutile. The proper amount of Y doping will cause the lattice to expand, the new defects will form and the smaller band-gap energy will be revealed. Thus, the absorption ability toward the ultraviolet can be improved, the redshift of the absorption band can also be found. As the results of it, the hydrophilicity and photocatalytic efficiency can improved. Furthermore, the photocatalytic activity increases with the hydrophilicity. When the calcination temperature of thin films is 450oC and the Y-doping is 0.3%, the main crystalline phase of the samples is the anatase, the contact angle is only 13.7o and the degradation ratio of methylene blue reached 98.84%.
