Four strong-base anion exchange resins (AERs) with different properties were selected to investigate dissolved organic matter (DOM) removal from river water containing inorganic anions. Rapid sand-filtered water was obtained from a water treatment plant in Tokyo, Japan, and then concentrated by an ultrafiltration membrane for use in ion exchange experiments to simulate high dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and sulfate conditions. AERs removed 23–50% of DOC and 70–80% of UV254 within 30 min despite high sulfate concentration (121 mg/L). Although the materials and structure of the AERs did not affect the reduction of UV254, DOC removal was affected. The highest DOC reduction was achieved by a macroporous polyacrylic AER (Purolite), while the macroporous polystyrene IRA 910 had the lowest DOC removal. A pseudo-second-order kinetic model showed that the rate constants and the initial sorption rates of polyacrylic resins were higher than those by polystyrene resins, suggesting that more hydrophilic structure of AERs exhibited faster DOC removal. Aromatic DOM with a molecular weight (MW) of 800–3,000 Da was almost completely removed by AERs, whereas only half of aromatic DOMs smaller than 800 Da were removed by AERs. Adsorbed DOC comprised less than 6% of all exchanged anions, whereas the adsorbed sulfate was about 90% due to comparatively high concentration of sulfate in the water sample.

Abstract Ion exchange (IX) process is increasingly used as a cost-effective treatment for the removal of natural organic matter (NOM) from drinking water. However, fundamental studies under the influence of variable NOM characteristics and inorganic anions have often been overlooked. This is important given NOM characteristics (such as charge density and molecular weight) and inorganic anions concentrations are geographically and seasonally variable. We examined the performance of a strongly basic IX resin for the simultaneous removal of NOM, inorganic ions and micropollutants (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and algal toxins), from different surface and recycled waters. The results indicated >70% removal of NOM for ∼20,000 Bed Volumes (BV) with an uptake of NOM fractions following the order of their respective charge densities. IX pore blockage and consequent site reduction was observed in the presence of higher molecular weight NOM fractions (breakthrough ∼7,000 BV). Moreover, NOM and inorganic ions breakthrough corresponded to ∼85–90% site occupancy (in meq) in the absence of pore blocking compounds. IX also provided simultaneous removal of inorganic ions (>90%) and charged micropollutants. Complete removals of Microcystin-LR and multiple long- and short-chained PFAS were achieved at environmentally relevant concentrations with dosages of 1,000 mg/L (or 4.5 mL/L) or higher.

Abstract A procedure has been developed for the automated Isolation of aflatoxin M1 from decreamed milk. The method uses online stopped flow dialysis and subsequent trace enrichment on a reverse-phase column. After a back-flush to the analytical liquid chromatography column, aflatoxin M1 is determined with fluorescence detection. Fully automated analysis Is possible with reproducible dialysis recoveries above 50% (CV = 7.5%, n = 25 at the 50 ng/kg level) and determination levels of 20 ng/kg within 20 mln.
