Abstract Although the Inuit numeration system has no structural limits, its actual use is limited to concrete situations where the quantities involved are small. In Inuktitut (Inuit dialects of the Canadian Eastern Arctic), this system has traditionally had very little use in measuring the passage of time. As a result of contact with Westerners, the situation has partially changed, as shown by the expression of the days of the week and the time of the day. This article presents the essential data relevant to the dialect of Nunavik (Arctic Quebec).

Have you ever encountered a teasing child who would only answer you with yes or no? If you ever do, tell him that you are going to read his mind through his revealing yeses and noes—and all you are going to do is ask him the same question several times! Tell him to choose a number between 1 and 256. Then pose the question “Is the number odd?” If he says yes, tell him to subtract one and divide the remainder by two. If he says no, simply tell him to divide his number by two. Follow this procedure until the question has been asked at most eight times. The game stops when the number one is reached.

From a pedagogical point of view, it is desirable to be able to show a subtle relationship between two pieces of mat hematics that are seemingly unrelated. When such a relationship can be shown at a rather elementary level and when the “marriage” helps to analyze still another interesting question, the potential benefits to the teacher are great. Such a situation will be described in this paper. It involves the use of the base-three positional numeration system in analyzing some topics from function theory.
