Along with energy savings for heating and cooling, the demand for thermal insulation materials is increasing and is an attempt to achieve good thermal insulation properties for some of the construction materials. In the field of porous and lightweight concrete, this is e.g. concrete for foundations, concrete for floor constructions or flat roofs. The problem with these concrete is a relatively rapid drop in mechanical properties in reducing bulk density, with using conventional silicate binders, especially in the area below 1000 kg/m3. The paper describes the possibility of using recycled organic fibers in combination with lightweight aggregates based on foam glass for the production of porous and lightweight concrete with a good ratio of mechanical and thermal insulation properties.

Proper selection of thermal insulation materials is an essential part of almost any construction project, whether it is a new construction, renovation or revitalization. There is a large number of materials available on the market and it is often very difficult to have a good grasp. Though some material has very similar features, they often cannot replace each other. The same applies to single-shell flat roofs. So far the most often used thermal insulation boards are from polystyrene and mineral wool. Their installation is accompanied by a large volume of waste. The experimental part deals with the general assessment of the behavior and properties of foam concrete. This allows simplification of technology of thermal insulation laying. Besides the construction speed up and the overall cost reduction the improvement in mechanical properties of the roof structure has been achieved.

In the practice of modern construction, light concretes of low thermal conductivity are used as a thermal insulation layer of enclosing structures. In particular, they are used for insulation of flat roofs of buildings for various purposes. One of their effective methods of thermal insulation is the use of polystyrene concrete of low average density and thermal conductivity directly in building conditions. Studies have established the rational selection of the composition of this type of concrete for the device of a monolithic thermal insulation layer, the resource support of the technological process, including the mechanization of work and qualification requirements for performers. The improvement of organizational and technological solutions of flat roofs based on the choice of rational parameters of technological processes and operations ensures a reduction in the complexity, duration and cost of work on the construction site.

Envelope insulation and protection is an important technical solution to reduce energy consumption, exterior damage, and environmental impacts in buildings. Thermal insulation tiles are used simultaneously as thermal insulation of the building envelope and protection material of under layers in flat roofs systems. The purpose of this research is to assess the environmental impacts of the life cycle of thermal insulation tiles for flat roofs. This research presents the up-to-date “cradle to gate” environmental performance of thermal insulation tiles for the environmental categories and life-cycle stages defined in European standards on environmental evaluation of building. The results presented in this research were based on site-specific data from a Portuguese factory and resulted from a consistent methodology that is here fully described, including the raw materials extraction and production, and the modelling of energy and transport processes at the production stage of thermal insulation tiles. These results reflect the weight of the raw-materials within the production process of thermal insulation tiles in all environmental categories and show that some life cycle stages, such as transportation of raw materials (A2) and packaging and packaging waste (A3.1 and A3.3, respectively), may not be discarded in a cradle to gate study of a construction material because they can make a significant contribution to some environmental categories. Moreover, complementary results regarding the economic, environmental, and energy performance Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of flat roofs solutions incorporating the thermal insulation tiles studied showed that the influence of the economic costs on the total aggregated costs of these solutions is much higher than that of the environmental costs due to the lower environmental costs of the thermal insulation tiles at the product stage (A1–A3). These costs influenced the corresponding percentage of the environmental costs (between 14% and 18%) and the percentage of the economic costs (between 70% and 75%) in the total aggregated (environmental, economic, and energy) net present value (NPV). Finally, a complementary “cradle to cradle” environmental LCA discussion is presented including the following additional life cycle stages: maintenance and replacement (B2–B4), operational energy use (B6), and end-of-life stage and benefits and loads beyond the system boundary (C1–C4 and D).

Envelope constructions of panel apartment buildings in Slovakia are made up of one or more layers of external panels. They typically have one or double-skin flat roofs. Nowadays, almost all envelope constructions, that yet have not been insulated and renovated, show to have insufficient thermoisolation performances. Especially roofs seems to have unsatisfactory moisture regime facilities. The article describes fundamental thermal technical characteristics of envelope constructions (external walls and flat roofs) in panel appartment buildings in their original state and after renewal in the form of additional thermal insulation.
