ABSTRACT: The story of the first Italian communications satellite, SIRIO, started in 1968, after the failure of the European project for the vector ELDO-PAS. The story up to the launch in 1977 involved the encumbering legacy of the San Marco satellite's success in the 1960s, political uncertainty in Italy, international economic crises of the 1970s, an overtly complex management system, and an inexperienced aerospace industry. Despite these handicaps, SIRIO won the race with its nearest competitor, the European satellite OTS, which had a similar research aim in the super high frequency band. In addition to collecting a large amount of useful data, SIRIO catalyzed the process for developing an improved organizational structure for Italian space research.

A description of an experimental investigation of the variations in yarn tension during both ring and rotor open-end spinning which have frequencies equal to, or greater than, the rotational speed of the system is given. Typical results are illustrated and discussed both in terms of statistical parameters such as the coefficient of variation and in terms of their spectra. Tension variations during rotor spinning are shown to have, in general, a much less pronounced periodic structure then the corresponding variations during ring spinning.

After deriving the propagation formula of stress wave through incident bar, the measured signals both in horizontal impact test and drop impact tests are investigated with novel fiber Bragg grating sensors(FBGs). Especially those strain signals from FBGs which mounted on the surface of an incident bar are studied. The signals in impactor and the FBGs embedded in the composite material under similar test condition are compared. The dropping and impacting models have been setup. The experiment data measured in a lab are analyzed both in time-domain and in frequency domain. Those ultra-high frequency components in the above strain signals can not be obtained by current FBG measurement system due to frequency limit of the demodulation system. Further study to improve the frequency of demodulation system will be done in next step.
