Abstract. Operational forecasting is hampered both by the rapid divergence of nearby initial conditions and by error in the underlying model. Interest in chaos has fuelled much work on the first of these two issues; this paper focuses on the second. A new approach to quantifying state-dependent model error, the local model drift, is derived and deployed both in examples and in operational numerical weather prediction models. A simple law is derived to relate model error to likely shadowing performance (how long the model can stay close to the observations). Imperfect model experiments are used to contrast the performance of truncated models relative to a high resolution run, and the operational model relative to the analysis. In both cases the component of forecast error due to state-dependent model error tends to grow as the square-root of forecast time, and provides a major source of error out to three days. These initial results suggest that model error plays a major role and calls for further research in quantifying both the local model drift and expected shadowing times.

Spore killers in fungi are selfish genetic elements that distort Mendelian segregation in their favor. It remains unclear how many species harbor them and how diverse their mechanisms are. Here, we discover two spore killers from a natural isolate of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. Both killers belong to the previously uncharacterized wtf gene family with 25 members in the reference genome. These two killers act in strain-background-independent and genome-location-independent manners to perturb the maturation of spores not inheriting them. Spores carrying one killer are protected from its killing effect but not that of the other killer. The killing and protecting activities can be uncoupled by mutation. The numbers and sequences of wtf genes vary considerably between S. pombe isolates, indicating rapid divergence. We propose that wtf genes contribute to the extensive intraspecific reproductive isolation in S. pombe, and represent ideal models for understanding how segregation-distorting elements act and evolve.

AbstractHeritable symbionts represent important components of host biology, both as antagonistic reproductive parasites and as beneficial protective partners. An important component of heritable microbes’ biology is their ability to establish in new host species, a process equivalent to a host shift for an infectiously transmitted parasite or pathogen. For a host shift to occur, the symbiont must be compatible with the host: it must not cause excess pathology, must have good vertical transmission, and possess a drive phenotype that enables spread. Classically, compatibility has been considered a declining function of genetic distance between novel and ancestral host species. Here we investigate the evolutionary lability of compatibility to heritable microbes by comparing the capacity for a symbiont to establish in two novel host species equally related to the ancestral host. Compatibility of the protective Spiroplasma from D. hydei with D. simulans and D. melanogaster was tested. The Spiroplasma had contrasting compatibility in these two host species. The transinfection showed pathology and low vertical transmission in D. melanogaster but was asymptomatic and transmitted with high efficiency in D. simulans. These results were not affected by the presence/absence of Wolbachia in either of the two species. The pattern of protection was not congruent with that for pathology/transmission, with protection being weaker in the D. simulans, the host in which Spiroplasma was asymptomatic and transmitted well. Further work indicated pathological interactions occurred in D. sechellia and D. yakuba, indicating that D. simulans was unusual in being able to carry the symbiont without damage. The differing compatibility of the symbiont with these closely related host species emphasises first the rapidity with which host-symbiont compatibility evolves despite compatibility itself not being subject to direct selection, and second the independence of the different components of compatibility (pathology, transmission, protection). This requirement to fit three different independently evolving aspects of compatibility, if commonly observed, is likely to be a major feature limiting the rate of host shifts. Moving forward, the variation between sibling species pairs observed above provides an opportunity to identify the mechanisms behind variable compatibility between closely related host species, which will drive hypotheses as to the evolutionary drivers of compatibility variation.

Cells are organized by functional modules, which typically contain components whose removal severely compromises the module's function. Despite their importance, these components are not absolutely conserved between parts of the tree of life, suggesting that cells can evolve to perform the same biological functions with different proteins. We evolved Saccharomyces cerevisiae for 1000 generations without the important polarity gene BEM1. Initially the bem1∆ lineages rapidly increase in fitness and then slowly reach >90% of the fitness of their BEM1 ancestors at the end of the evolution. Sequencing their genomes and monitoring polarization reveals a common evolutionary trajectory, with a fixed sequence of adaptive mutations, each improving cell polarization by inactivating proteins. Our results show that organisms can be evolutionarily robust to physiologically destructive perturbations and suggest that recovery by gene inactivation can lead to rapid divergence in the parts list for cell biologically important functions.

ABSTRACTAdaptive radiation occurs when the members of a single lineage evolve different adaptive forms in response to selection imposed by competitors or predators. Iconic examples include Darwin’s finches, Caribbean anoles, and Hawaiian silverswords, all of which live on islands. Parasites, which live on host “islands,” show macroevolutionary patterns consistent with adaptive radiation in response to host-imposed selection. Here we show rapid adaptive divergence of experimentally evolving feather lice in response to preening, the main host defense. We demonstrate that host defense exerts strong phenotypic selection for crypsis in lice transferred to different colored rock pigeons (Columba livia). During four years of experimental evolution (∼60 generations), the lice evolved heritable differences in color. The color differences spanned the phenotypic distribution of congeneric species of lice adapted to other species of pigeons. Our results indicate that host-mediated selection triggers rapid divergence in the adaptive radiation of parasites, which are among the most diverse organisms on earth. Our research suggests that host defense should be included with competition and predation as a major mechanism driving the evolution of biodiversity by adaptive radiation.

Abstract I genotyped lek-mating Long-tailed Manakins (Chiroxiphia linearis) at Monteverde and Santa Rosa, Costa Rica, 115 km apart. Cavalli-Sforza distance was 0.04, DLR was 0.18, and RST and θ were both 0.02. Bayesian clustering analysis indicated that both populations were part of a single cluster rather than from distinct clusters. I present a binomial test for probability of allelic absence as a function of sample size. Genotypic likelihood tests assigned 50% of Monteverde birds to Santa Rosa, versus 26% of Santa Rosa birds to Monteverde. Two lines of evidence supported the idea of asymmetric gene flow up the elevational gradient from Santa Rosa to Monteverde. Low differentiation at this spatial scale, despite intense sexual selection, suggests that sexual selection alone is unlikely to promote rapid divergence leading to speciation. Reduced gene flow, produced by geographic barriers or behavioral factors, may also be required. Un análisis de agrupamiento bayesiano indicó que ambas poblaciones pertenecen a un mismo grupo y no a dos grupos diferentes. Presento una prueba binomial para determinar la probabilidad de ausencia alélica como una función del tamaño muestral. La prueba de probabilidad genotípica asignó al 50% de los individuos de Monteverde a la población de Santa Rosa, mientras que un 26% de los individuos de Santa Rosa fue asignado a Monteverde. Dos líneas de evidencia apoyan la idea de flujo génico asimétrico hacia arriba del gradiente altitudinal entre Santa Rosa y Monteverde. A pesar de la intensa presión selectiva sexual, la baja diferenciación a esta escala espacial sugiere que probablemente la selección sexual por sí sola no promueve la rápida divergencia que conduce a la especiación. También se requeriría reducción del flujo génico a través de barreras geográficas y factores conductuales.
