The northern margin of St. Croix, V.I. is characterized by three morphological features: a narrow shallow water carbonate shelf; a steep slope; and a deep-sea basin. Shallow water reef material and carbonate debris occurs along the shelf. A thin carbonate ooze overlies the steep slope where occasionally rock outcrops occur. Trough sediments are clayey silts and turbidite deposits. Average shear strengths range between 3.1–10.0 kPa for the slope and 5.8–28.3 kPa for the trough (1-m cores). Values range as high as 69.1 kPa at sediment depths greater than one meter. Average sensitivities range between 3.2–6.1 for the slope and 4.1–12.1 for the trough (upper 1 m). Higher sensitivities [8–12] indicate the presence of metastable deposits and considerable strength loss upon disturbance. Variation in the sand, silt, and clay sized fractions, the nature of the carbonate particles, and bioturbation strongly affect the variability in the geotechnical properties. Quantitative studies of local morphology, processes and sediment properties reveal the need for detailed data in specific areas of engineering interest.

There are several geological factors affecting the accumulation of CBM, including tectonic condition, burial depth, coal thickness, coal rank, gas content, permeability, reservoir pressure, desorption pressure and hydrological condition, etc. This article analyzes the influence of tectonic characteristics on the accumulation of CBM in H area, combining the tectonic characteristics and the actual production data, finally conclusions can be drawn that the uplifting movement of crust after coal-forming period could break the original adsorption equilibrium, then CBM would escape under unfavorable preservation condition; different scales of fractures and folds formed by tectonic movements play an important role in the preservation and dissipation as well as in the enrichment and accumulation.

To apply the orthogonal design to confirm the optimal combination parameter of hydraulic squeeze is one good method for the coal seam in a state of stable geological factors. But if so the effect of injection meets uncertainly the requirement of the project in pace with advancement of the hydraulic squeeze measure and changing of the geological factors.In view of this situation and the characteristic of qualitative variable as well as quantitative variable of the geological factors affecting hydraulic squeeze. Put forward the application of numerical theory on the basis of optimization study of orthogonal design to confirm the optimal combination of the technical parameters of hydraulic extrusion when geological factors is in precarious state and then proceed optimization study.
