Abstract We address again the old problem of calculating the radion effective potential in Randall-Sundrum scenarios, with the Goldberger-Wise stabilization mechanism. Various prescriptions have been used in the literature, most of them based on heuristic derivations and then applied in some approximations. We define rigorously a light radion 4D effective action by using the interpolating field method. For a given choice of the interpolating field, defined as a functional of 5D fields, the radion effective action is uniquely defined by the procedure of integrating out the other fields, with the constrained 5D equations of motion always satisfied with help of the Lagrange multipliers. Thus, for a given choice of the interpolating fields we obtain a precise prescription for calculating the effective potential. Different choices of the interpolating fields give different prescriptions but in most cases very similar effective potentials. We confirm the correctness of one prescription used so far on a more heuristic basis and also find several new, much more economical, ways of calculating the radion effective potential. Our general considerations are illustrated by several numerical examples. It is shown that in some cases the old methods, especially in models with strong back-reaction, give results which are off even by orders of magnitude. Thus, our results are important e.g. for estimation of critical temperature in phase transitions.

The one-loop Vilkovisky effective potential which is not dependent on a gauge and a parametrization of quantum field, is investigated. We have considered Einstein gravity on a background manifold of (flat space) × (d−4- sphere) or × (d−4- dimensional torus ), d is even, and of R3 × (1- sphere ), where R3 is flat space. The numerical calculation for the cases R4 × Td−4 (d = 6,8,10) and R3 × S1 is done. The solution to the one-loop corrected equations of motion is found, although the spontaneous compactification is not stable in these cases.

We show the equivalence between Fujikawa’s method for calculating the scale anomaly and the diagrammatic approach to calculating the effective potential via the background field method, for anO(N)symmetric scalar field theory. Fujikawa’s method leads to a sum of terms, each one superficially in one-to-one correspondence with a vacuum diagram of the 1-loop expansion. From the viewpoint of the classical action, the anomaly results in a breakdown of the Ward identities due to scale-dependence of the couplings, whereas, in terms of the effective action, the anomaly is the result of the breakdown of Noether’s theorem due to explicit symmetry breaking terms of the effective potential.

We have extended the variational perturbative theory based on the background field method to include the optimized expansion of Okopinska and the post Gaussian effective potential of Stansu and Stevenson. This new method provides a much simpler way to compute the correction terms to the Gaussian effective action (or potential). We have also renormalized the effective potential in 3+1 dimensions by introducing appropriate counterterms in the Lagrangian.

AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan mengkaji perbandingan kepercayaan masyarakat Talagadi Majalengka dan masyarakat Nagoya di Jepang. Kepercayaan yang dimaksud dalampenelitian ini adalah kepercayaan yang berhubungan dengan tabu atau pamali dankepercayaan yang berhubungan dengan keberuntungan pada kedua masyarakat tersebut.Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut digunakan metode deskripstif kualitatif. Dalam memupudata digunakan metode lapangan karena peneliti terjun langsung ke masyarakat. Disamping itu, digunakan pula metode survey melalui penyebaran daftar kuesioner. Hasilpenelitian menunjukkan bahwa bentuk kepercayaan yang berhubungan dengan tabu ataupamali pada masyarakat Talaga dan Nagoya meliputi kegiatan yang dilakukan oleh manusia.Adapun kepercayaan yang berhubungan dengan keberuntungan pada kedua masyarakattersebut berkaitan dengan binatang, benda, dan kegiatan manusia. Sampai saat ini baikmasyarakat Talaga maupun Nagoya masih memegang teguh kepercayaan tersebut.Kata kunci: kepercayaan, Talaga, Nagoya, deskriptif kualitatif, komparasi budaya.AbstractThe aim of this research is to review the comparison of belief between the society ofTalaga in Majalengka and the society of Nagoya in Japan. The intended belief on this study isthe one related with a taboo or pamali, and the belief correlated to luck on both societies. Inachieving the goal, this research uses a descriptive qualitative method. To get the data, thewriter uses a field method that he (/she) directly involves with the people. On the other hand,the writer also uses a survey method by distributing questioners. The result shows that the beliefcorrelated with the taboo or pamali of Talaga and Nagoya societies covers the activities doneby human. Also with the belief related to luck of both societies corresponds to animals, things,and human’s activities. Until now, either Talaga society or Nagoya’s still keeps those beliefs.Keyword: belief, Talaga, Nagoya, descriptive qualitative, cultural comparison.

Abstract We study Randall-Sundrum two brane setups with mismatched brane tensions. For the vacuum solutions, boundary conditions demand that the induced metric on each of the branes is either de Sitter, Anti-de Sitter, or Minkowski. For incompatible boundary conditions, the bulk metric is necessarily time-dependent. This introduces a new class of time-dependent solutions with the potential to address cosmological issues and provide alternatives to conventional inflationary (or contracting) scenarios. We take a first step in this paper toward such solutions. One important finding is that the resulting solutions can be very succinctly described in terms of an effective action involving only the induced metric on either one of the branes and the radion field. But the full geometry cannot necessarily be simply described with a single coordinate patch. We concentrate here on the time- dependent solutions but argue that supplemented with a brane stabilization mechanism one can potentially construct interesting cosmological models this way. This is true both with and without a brane stabilization mechanism.

We introduce a new combination of Bernstein polynomials (BPs) and Block-Pulse functions (BPFs) on the interval [0, 1]. These functions are suitable for finding an approximate solution of the second kind integral equation. We call this method Hybrid Bernstein Block-Pulse Functions Method (HBBPFM). This method is very simple such that an integral equation is reduced to a system of linear equations. On the other hand, convergence analysis for this method is discussed. The method is computationally very simple and attractive so that numerical examples illustrate the efficiency and accuracy of this method.

The equivalence of two conditions, condition (3) and condition (4) stated in Problem Statement section, regarding the existence of stabilizing switching laws between two unstable linear systems first appeared in (Feron 1996). Although Feron never published this result, it has been referenced in almost every survey on switched systems; see, for example, (Liberzon and Morse 1999). This paper proposes another way to prove the equivalence of two conditions regarding the existence of stabilizing switching laws between two unstable linear systems. One is effective for theoretical derivation, while the other is implementable, and a class of stabilizing switching laws have been explicitly constructed by Wicks et al. (1994). With the help of the equivalent relation, a condition for the existence of controllers and stabilizing switching laws between two unstabilizable linear control systems is then proposed. Then, the study is further extended to the issue concerning the construction of quadratically stabilizing switching laws among unstable linear systems and unstabilizable linear control systems. The obtained results are employed to study the existence of control laws and quadratically stabilizing switching laws within a class of unstabilizable linear control systems. The numerical examples are illustrated and simulated to show the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed methods.

In this work, a simple new iterative technique based on the integral operator, the inverse of the differential operator in the problem under consideration, is introduced to solve nonlinear integro-differential and systems of nonlinear integro-differential equations (IDEs). The introduced technique is simpler and shorter in its computational procedures and time than the other methods. In addition, it does not require discretization, linearization or any restrictive assumption of any form in providing analytical or approximate solution to linear and nonlinear equations. Also, this technique does not require calculating Adomian’s polynomials, Lagrange’s multiplier values or equating the terms of equal powers of the impeding parameter which need more computational procedures and time. These advantages make it reliable and its efficiency is demonstrated with numerical examples.

Mechanicalmethods were employed to study the motion and force transmission performance ofa kind of connecting rod slider mechanism with a curved edge driving component.The deduction methods and the computation formulae of the slider displacement,velocity, acceleration and the executive force gain coefficient were given.Considering two cases of the driving components with straight line edge andexponential function edge, the numerical examples was computed respectively,the results show that the former one is suitable for the force transmission andcan be used in the grip design and the other one is suitable for the motiontransmission which can be used in the fast moving mechanism

Abstract Concise equations for rotor dynamics analysis are presented. Two coordinate ordering methods are introduced in the element equations of motion. One is in the real domain and the other is in the complex domain. The two proposed ordering algorithms lead to more compact element matrices. A station numbering technique is also proposed for the system equations during the assembly process. This numbering technique can minimize the matrix bandwidth, the memory storage and can increase the computational efficiency.
