A novel Chern–Simons E8 gauge theory of gravity in D = 15 based on an octicE8 invariant expression in D = 16 (recently constructed by Cederwall and Palmkvist) is developed. A grand unification model of gravity with the other forces is very plausible within the framework of a supersymmetric extension (to incorporate spacetime fermions) of this Chern–Simons E8 gauge theory. We review the construction showing why the ordinary 11D Chern–Simons gravity theory (based on the Anti de Sitter group) can be embedded into a Clifford-algebra valued gauge theory and that an E8 Yang–Mills field theory is a small sector of a Clifford (16) algebra gauge theory. An E8 gauge bundle formulation was instrumental in understanding the topological part of the 11-dim M-theory partition function. The nature of this 11-dim E8 gauge theory remains unknown. We hope that the Chern–Simons E8 gauge theory of gravity in D = 15 advanced in this work may shed some light into solving this problem after a dimensional reduction.

Due to a suitable Higgs mechanism, a standard Anti-de Sitter gauge theory becomes spontaneously broken. The resulting Lorentz invariant gravitational action includes the Hilbert–Einstein term of ordinary Einstein–Cartan gravity with cosmological constant, plus contributions quadratic in curvature and torsion, and a scalar Higgs sector.

We study anti-de Sitter black holes in 2 + 1 dimensions in terms of Chern–Simons gauge theory of the anti-de Sitter group coupled to a source. Taking the source to be an anti-de Sitter state specified by its Casimir invariants, we show how all the relevant features of the black hole are accounted for. The requirement that the source be a unitary representation leads to a discrete tower of excited states which provide a microscopic model for the black hole.

We investigate an effective torsion curvature in a second-order formalism underlying a two-form world-volume dynamics in a D5-brane. In particular, we consider the two form in presence of a background (open string) metric in a U(1) gauge theory. Interestingly the formalism may be viewed via a noncoincident pair of [Formula: see text]-brane with a global Nereu–Schwarz (NS) two form on an anti-brane and a local two form on a brane. The energy–momentum tensor is computed in the six-dimensional (6D) conformal field theory (CFT). It is shown to source a metric fluctuation on a vacuum created pair of [Formula: see text]-brane at a cosmological horizon by the two-form quanta in the gauge theory. The emergent gravity scenario is shown to describe a low-energy (perturbative) string vacuum in 6D with a nonperturbative (NP) quantum correction by a lower (p < 5) dimensional Dp-brane or an anti-brane in the formalism. A closed string exchange between a pair of [Formula: see text]-brane, underlying a closed/open string duality, is argued to describe the Einstein vacuum in a low-energy limit. We obtain topological de Sitter (TdS) and Schwarzschild brane universe in six dimensions. The brane/anti-brane geometries are analyzed to explore some of their characteristic and thermal behaviors in presence of the quantum effects. They reveal an underlying nine-dimensional type IIA and IIB superstring theories on S1.

We present a Liouville-string approach to confinement in four-dimensional gauge theories, which extends previous approaches to include nonconformal theories. We consider Liouville field theory on world sheets whose boundaries are the Wilson loops of gauge theory, which exhibit vortex and spike defects. We show that world sheet vortex condensation occurs when the Wilson loop is embedded in four target–space–time dimensions, and show that this corresponds to the condensation of gauge magnetic monopoles in target–space. We also show that vortex condensation generates an effective string tension corresponding to the confinement of electric degrees of freedom. The tension is independent of the string length in a gauge theory whose electric coupling varies logarithmically with the length scale. The Liouville field is naturally interpreted as an extra target dimension, with an anti-de-Sitter (AdS) structure induced by recoil effects on the gauge monopoles, interpreted as D branes of the effective string theory. Black holes in the bulk AdS space correspond to world sheet defects, so that phases of the bulk gravitational system correspond to the different world sheet phases, and hence to different phases of the four-dimensional gauge theory. Deconfinement is associated with a Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless transition of vortices on the Wilson-loop world sheet, corresponding in turn to a phase transition of the black holes in the bulk AdS space.
