Fitting parton distribution data with multiplicative normalization uncertainties

Se dan a conocer nuevas localizaciones y datos corológicos para 98 especies (61 Rhodophyta, 22 Ochrophyta, 15 Chlorophyta) de algas bentónicas marinas recolectadas en el intermareal y submareal de más de 80 localidades de las costas atlánticas y cantábricas de la Península Ibérica. Polysiphonia devoniensis, P. fibrata y Zonaria tournefortii son novedad para Portugal y 5 especies (Bonnemaisonia hamifera, Calosiphonia vermicularis, P. devoniensis, Hincksia intermedia y Derbesia marina stadium Halicystis ovalis) son nuevas citas para Galicia. Paralelamente, se aportan 101 primeras citas provinciales (2 Guipúzcoa, 1 Vizcaya, 8 Cantabria, 5 Asturias, 7 Lugo, 1 A Coruña, 8 Pontevedra, 1 Beira litoral, 15 Estremadura, 20 Alentejo, 25 Algarve y 8 Cádiz) y, además, se dan a conocer 108 segundas citas provinciales. Aunque la flora bentónica marina del Atlántico Peninsular ha sido objeto de numerosos estudios, estos nuevos hallazgos corológicos ponen en evidencia que todavía son necesarios más estudios florísticos en estas costas.English. In this work, we provide new records and geographical distribution data for 98 seaweeds (61 Rhodophyta, 22 Ochrophyta, 15 Chlorophyta) inhabiting more than 80 sites (intertidal and subtidal) of the Atlantic Iberian Peninsula. Polysiphonia devoniensis, P. fibrata y Zonaria tournefortii are new records for Portugal and 5 species (Bonnemaisonia hamifera, Calosiphonia vermicularis, P. devoniensis, Hincksia intermedia and Derbesia marina stadium Halicystis ovalis) are new records for Galicia. Moreover, 101 new records are reported for the first time in the studied provinces (2 Guipúzcoa, 1 Vizcaya, 8 Cantabria, 5 Asturias, 7 Lugo, 1 A Coruña, 8 Pontevedra, 1 Beira litoral, 15 Estremadura, 20 Alentejo, 25 Algarve y 8 Cádiz) and 108 for the second time. Although the Atlantic marine algae of the Iberian Peninsula are well studied, these new findings show that further floristic studies are necessary to complete our knowledge of the natural heritage of this region.

Hornstedtia microcheila Ridl. (Zingiberaceae; Alpinioidieae; Alpinieae) is a poorly-known endemic species in the Philippines. It has not been collected again since its description in 1909. In 2017, however, the species was rediscovered in the Mt. Mandalagan Range, Patag, Silay City, Negros Occidental, after a lapse of over a century. A new, amended and extended description of H. microcheila based on this new collection is presented herein. Typification, colour photographs, distribution data, ecological details as well as a taxonomic key to the different Hornstedtia species in the Philippines are also provided.

The holarctic moth genus Catocala Schrank (1802) (Erebidae: Erebinae, Catocalini) includes about 300 species that are often monophagous on oak (Quercus), willow (Salix) and poplar (Populus). In this research, we studied the moths of the genus Catocala in Iran that were collected by light traps in different Iranian provinces, mostly during 2010–2018. Our results revealed eight species and two subspecies of Catocala from the provinces of Kermanshah, Lorestan, Chaharmahal-va Bakhtiari, Ilam, Khuzestan, Kohgiluyeh-va Boyerahmad, Fars, Kerman, Khorasan-e Jonubi, Yazd and Khorasan-e Razavi. Among the records there are 14 new provincial records. Overall, we list 20 species and four subspecies of Catocala as occurring in Iran. This list is compiled from our own research and a review of existing literature.

A worldwide taxonomic revision of the species belonging to the moss genus Chionoloma Dixon (Pottiaceae) is here presented. Our work is based on the morphological analysis of more than 2600 specimens deposited in different herbaria or collected during field trips. A total of 131 names were found and their nomenclatural types were examined, resulting in the lectotypification of 45 names. It is concluded that Chionoloma is composed of 22 species and one variety, seven of them are here newly combined (C. circinatum (Besch.) M. Alonso, M. J. Cano & J. A. Jiménez; C. cylindrotheca (Mitt.) M. Alonso, M. J. Cano & J. A. Jiménez; C. hyalinoblastum (Broth.) M. Alonso, M. J. Cano & J. A. Jiménez; C. melanostomum (Mitt.) M. Alonso, M. J. Cano & J. A. Jiménez; C. orthodontum (Müll. Hal.) M. Alonso, M. J. Cano & J. A. Jiménez; C. sarawakense (Dixon) M. Alonso, M. J. Cano & J. A. Jiménez; and C. stenocarpum (Thér) M. Alonso, M. J. Cano & J. A. Jiménez). Moreover, 42 names are newly synonymized and a total of 74 new records for various countries are reported. Keys, descriptions, illustrations, photographs, and distribution data of each species are provided.

Abstract Background The genome of Vibrionaceae bacteria, which consists of two circular chromosomes, is replicated in a highly ordered fashion. In fast-growing bacteria, multifork replication results in higher gene copy numbers and increased expression of genes located close to the origin of replication of Chr 1 (ori1). This is believed to be a growth optimization strategy to satisfy the high demand of essential growth factors during fast growth. The relationship between ori1-proximate growth-related genes and gene expression during fast growth has been investigated by many researchers. However, it remains unclear which other gene categories that are present close to ori1 and if expression of all ori1-proximate genes is increased during fast growth, or if expression is selectively elevated for certain gene categories. Results We calculated the pangenome of all complete genomes from the Vibrionaceae family and mapped the four pangene categories, core, softcore, shell and cloud, to their chromosomal positions. This revealed that core and softcore genes were found heavily biased towards ori1, while shell genes were overrepresented at the opposite part of Chr 1 (i.e., close to ter1). RNA-seq of Aliivibrio salmonicida and Vibrio natriegens showed global gene expression patterns that consistently correlated with chromosomal distance to ori1. Despite a biased gene distribution pattern, all pangene categories contributed to a skewed expression pattern at fast-growing conditions, whereas at slow-growing conditions, softcore, shell and cloud genes were responsible for elevated expression. Conclusion The pangene categories were non-randomly organized on Chr 1, with an overrepresentation of core and softcore genes around ori1, and overrepresentation of shell and cloud genes around ter1. Furthermore, we mapped our gene distribution data on to the intracellular positioning of chromatin described for V. cholerae, and found that core/softcore and shell/cloud genes appear enriched at two spatially separated intracellular regions. Based on these observations, we hypothesize that there is a link between the genomic location of genes and their cellular placement.

AbstractBackground and AimsSouthern Arabia is a global biodiversity hotspot with a high proportion of endemic desert-adapted plants. Here we examine evidence for a Pleistocene climate refugium in the southern Central Desert of Oman, and its role in driving biogeographical patterns of endemism.MethodsDistribution data for seven narrow-range endemic plants were collected systematically across 195 quadrats, together with incidental and historic records. Important environmental variables relevant to arid coastal areas, including night-time fog and cloud cover, were developed for the study area. Environmental niche models using presence/absence data were built and tuned for each species, and spatial overlap was examined.Key ResultsA region of the Jiddat Al Arkad reported independent high model suitability for all species. Examination of environmental data across southern Oman indicates that the Jiddat Al Arkad displays a regionally unique climate with higher intra-annual stability, due in part to the influence of the southern monsoon. Despite this, the relative importance of environmental variables was highly differentiated among species, suggesting that characteristic variables such as coastal fog are not major cross-species predictors at this scale.ConclusionsThe co-occurrence of a high number of endemic study species within a narrow monsoon-influenced region is indicative of a refugium with low climate change velocity. Combined with climate analysis, our findings provide strong evidence for a southern Arabian Pleistocene refugium in Oman’s Central Desert. We suggest that this refugium has acted as an isolated temperate and mesic island in the desert, resulting in the evolution of these narrow-range endemic flora. Based on the composition of species, this system may represent the northernmost remnant of a continuous belt of mesic vegetation formerly ranging from Africa to Asia, with close links to the flora of East Africa. This has significant implications for future conservation of endemic plants in an arid biodiversity hotspot.

Some non-trivial features of the QCD-improved parton model relevant to applications on heavy particle production and semi-hard (small-x) processes of interest to collider physics are reviewed. The underlying ideas are illustrated by a simple example. Limitations of the naive parton formula as well as first order corrections and subtractions to it are dis-cussed in a quantitative way. The behavior of parton distribution functions at small x and for heavy quarks are discussed. Recent work on possible impact of unconventional small-x behavior of the parton distributions on small-x physics at SSC and Tevatron are summarized. The Drell-Yan process is found to be particularly sensitive to the small x dependence of parton distributions. Measurements of this process at the Tevatron can provide powerful constraints on the expected rates of semi-hard processes at the SSC.
