We present an analysis of possible infinities that may be present in uncompactified multi-loop heterotic and type II superstring amplitudes constructed, without use of the short-string limit, in the light-cone gauge, and with use of a closed [10]-SUSY field theory algebra. Various types of degenerations of the integrand are discussed on the string world-sheet. No infinities are found, modulo (for type II) a particular identity for Green’s functions.

Functional methods are used to give a complete closure of the second-quantized field theory nonlinear realization of the ten-dimensional super-Poincaré algebra for the heterotic superstring in the Green-Schwarz formalism. New terms in the fundamental generators JI−, J+− are constructed at quartic order in the fields so as to close the Poincare algebra; a quartic term in the Hamiltonian is also derived. No higher order terms are needed for any generators of the full algebra.

We study numerically and analytically spatial properties of the ground state of a fundamental string in the light-cone gauge. We find that strings are smooth and have divergent average size. Their properties are very different from what is expected from particles in a conventional field theory.

By compactifying the Bagger–Lambert–Gustavsson model on ℝ1,1×S1, we obtain a new two-dimensional massless field theory with dynamical fields valued in the Lie three-algebra [Formula: see text] coupled with an SO(1, 1) scalar and vector field which are valued in the set [Formula: see text] of the endomorphisms of the Lie three-algebra. In the limit g BLG →∞ the theory reduces to a supersymmetric Lie three-valued generalization of the Green–Schwarz superstring in the light-cone gauge.
