Abstract There has been substantial progress in applying machine learning techniques to classification problems in collider and jet physics. But as these techniques grow in sophistication, they are becoming more sensitive to subtle features of jets that may not be well modeled in simulation. Therefore, relying on simulations for training will lead to sub-optimal performance in data, but the lack of true class labels makes it difficult to train on real data. To address this challenge we introduce a new approach, called Tag N’ Train (TNT), that can be applied to unlabeled data that has two distinct sub-objects. The technique uses a weak classifier for one of the objects to tag signal-rich and background-rich samples. These samples are then used to train a stronger classifier for the other object. We demonstrate the power of this method by applying it to a dijet resonance search. By starting with autoencoders trained directly on data as the weak classifiers, we use TNT to train substantially improved classifiers. We show that Tag N’ Train can be a powerful tool in model-agnostic searches and discuss other potential applications.

This study was conducted to investigate the stiffness and thicknesses of asphalt surface layer using the Enhance Resonance Search (ERS) technique. A total of fifteen locations in the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Campus have been identified to carry out this experiment. The results were then compared with standards provided by the Malaysian Public Works Department (PWD), Jabatan Pembangunan dan Penyelenggaraan (JPP) UKM and Kumpulan IKRAM Sdn. Bhd. The computation found that the range of elastic moduli values of asphalt layer is between 3928.877 and 17726.012 MPa. A comparison between the experiment results and JPP UKM standard on pavement thickness showed that the different is between 20% to 60%, with the average thickness of 44.13 mm.  However, the average value of thickness is still in good agreement with the JKR and JPP UKM standards. Some stiffness values obtained are higher than the standard, probably due to the quality of materials used, the influence of the traffic load and the age of the pavement construction.

Staphylococcus aureus is responsible for many types of infections related to biofilm presence. As the early diagnostics remains the best option for prevention of biofilm infections, the aim of the work presented was to search for differences in metabolite patterns of S. aureus ATCC6538 biofilm vs. free-swimming S. aureus planktonic forms. For this purpose, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was applied. Data obtained were supported by means of Scanning Electron Microscopy, quantitative cultures and X-ray computed microtomography. Metabolic trends accompanying S. aureus biofilm formation were found using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Levels of isoleucine, alanine and 2,3-butanediol were significantly higher in biofilm than in planktonic forms, whereas level of osmoprotectant glycine-betaine was significantly higher in planktonic forms of S. aureus. Results obtained may find future application in clinical diagnostics of S. aureus biofilm-related infections.

LHC run-II has a great potential to search for new resonances in the diphoton channel. Latest 13 TeV data already put stringent limits on the cross sections in the diphoton channel assuming the resonance is produced through the gluon-gluon fusion. Many beyond the Standard Model (SM) theories predict TeV-scale scalars, which copiously decay to diphotons. Apart from the gluon-gluon fusion production, these scalars can also be dominantly produced in other ways too at the LHC, namely, through the quark-quark fusion or the gauge boson fusions like the photon-photon, photon-Z, WW, or ZZ fusions. In this paper we use an effective field theory approach where a heavy scalar can be produced in various ways and recast the latest ATLAS diphoton resonance search to put model-independent limits on its mass and effective couplings to the SM particles. If a new scalar is discovered at the LHC, it would be very important to identify its production mechanism in order to probe the nature of the underlying theory. We show that combining various kinematic variables in a multivariate analysis can be very powerful to distinguish different production mechanisms from one another.

The earthquake performance of 196-kV, 230-kV, and 550-kV porcelain transformer bushings was studied by earthquake-simulator experimentation and analysis. The fundamental frequencies of the 196-kV, 230-kV, and 550-kV bushings were identified to be approximately 15 Hz, 18 Hz, and 8 Hz, respectively, using resonance-search testing on the simulator. The corresponding damping ratios were between 2 and 4 percent of critical. The 196-kV and 230-kV bushings survived severe earthquake shaking and were qualified to the High Level per the IEEE 693-1997 standard. The discrepancy between excellent behavior in the laboratory and poor behavior in the field of these types of bushings calls into question the procedures used for qualification of substation equipment. The 550-kV bushing survived shaking at the moderate performance level with limited damage and minor oil leakage. Current procedures for fragility testing of transformer bushings were evaluated and found to be neither appropriate nor conservative.
