Abstract In this work, we study a generalization of the coupled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with U(1) charge conservations. The model contains two copies of the complex SYK model at different chemical potentials, coupled by a direct hopping term. In the zero-temperature and small coupling limit with small averaged chemical potential, the ground state is an eternal wormhole connecting two sides, with a specific charge Q = 0, which is equivalent to a thermofield double state. We derive the conformal Green’s functions and determine corresponding IR parameters. At higher chemical potential, the system transit into the black hole phase. We further derive the Schwarzian effective action and study its quench dynamics. Finally, we compare numerical results with the analytical predictions.

Abstract We develop a novel bi-harmonic $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 superspace formulation of the $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM) in four dimensions. In this approach, the $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 SYM superfield constraints are solved in terms of on-shell $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 harmonic superfields. Such an approach provides a convenient tool of constructing the manifestly $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 supersymmetric invariants and further rewriting them in $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 harmonic superspace. In particular, we present $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 superfield form of the leading term in the $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 SYM effective action which was known previously in $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 superspace formulation.

Abstract Recent development of path integral matching techniques based on the covariant derivative expansion has made manifest a universal structure of one-loop effective Lagrangians. The universal terms can be computed once and for all to serve as a reference for one-loop matching calculations and to ease their automation. Here we present the fermionic universal one-loop effective action (UOLEA), resulting from integrating out heavy fermions (Dirac or Majorana) with scalar, pseudo-scalar, vector and axial-vector couplings. We also clarify the relation of the new terms computed here to terms previously computed in the literature and those that remain to complete the UOLEA. Our results can be readily used to efficiently obtain analytical expressions for effective operators arising from heavy fermion loops [13].

We show that the two-loop contribution to the coefficient of the Chern–Simons term in the effective action of the Yang–Mills–Chern–Simons theory is infrared finite in the background field Landau gauge. We also discuss the difficulties in verifying the conjecture, due to topological considerations, that there are no more quantum corrections to the Chern–Simons term other than the well-known one-loop shift of the coefficient.

Abstract It was proved more than three decades ago, that the first order α′ correction of string effective theory could be written as the Gauss-Bonnet term, which is the quadratic term of Lovelock gravity. In cosmological background, with an appropriate field redefinition, we reorganize the infinite α′ corrections of string effective action into a finite term expression for any specific dimension. This finite term expression matches Lovelock gravity exactly and thus fix the couplings of Lovelock gravity by the coefficients of string effective action. This result thus provides a strong support to string theory.

Abstract We apply the harmonic superspace approach for calculating the divergent part of the one-loop effective action of renormalizable 6D, $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (1, 0) supersymmetric higher-derivative gauge theory with a dimensionless coupling constant. Our consideration uses the background superfield method allowing to carry out the analysis of the effective action in a manifestly gauge covariant and $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (1, 0) supersymmetric way. We exploit the regularization by dimensional reduction, in which the divergences are absorbed into a renormalization of the coupling constant. Having the expression for the one-loop divergences, we calculate the relevant β-function. Its sign is specified by the overall sign of the classical action which in higher-derivative theories is not fixed a priori. The result agrees with the earlier calculations in the component approach. The superfield calculation is simpler and provides possibilities for various generalizations.

Abstract In this paper we study the Wiedemann-Franz laws for transport in 2+1 dimensions, and the action of Sl(2, ℤ) on this transport, for theories with an AdS/CMT dual. We find that Sl(2, ℤ) restricts the RG-like flow of conductivities and that the Wiedemann-Franz law is $$ \overline{L}=\overline{\kappa}/\left( T\sigma \right)={cg}_4^2\uppi /3 $$ L ¯ = κ ¯ / Tσ = cg 4 2 π / 3 , from the weakly coupled gravity dual. In a self-dual theory this value is also the value of L = κ/(Tσ) in the weakly coupled field theory description. Using the formalism of a 0+1 dimensional effective action for both generalized SY Kq models and the AdS4 gravity dual, we calculate the transport coefficients and show how they can be matched at large q. We construct a generalization of this effective action that is invariant under Sl(2, ℤ) and can describe vortex conduction and integer quantum Hall effect.

Abstract We study Randall-Sundrum two brane setups with mismatched brane tensions. For the vacuum solutions, boundary conditions demand that the induced metric on each of the branes is either de Sitter, Anti-de Sitter, or Minkowski. For incompatible boundary conditions, the bulk metric is necessarily time-dependent. This introduces a new class of time-dependent solutions with the potential to address cosmological issues and provide alternatives to conventional inflationary (or contracting) scenarios. We take a first step in this paper toward such solutions. One important finding is that the resulting solutions can be very succinctly described in terms of an effective action involving only the induced metric on either one of the branes and the radion field. But the full geometry cannot necessarily be simply described with a single coordinate patch. We concentrate here on the time- dependent solutions but argue that supplemented with a brane stabilization mechanism one can potentially construct interesting cosmological models this way. This is true both with and without a brane stabilization mechanism.
