In this paper, we try to give an alternative interpretation of the holography principle. We argue that the space or time may be regarded as emerging from quantum mechanics as an evolutive parameter. The lower D-dimensional theory is related to a corresponding (D+1)-theory by a mysterious quantum system. Then from the higher-dimensional theory, under a new dimension reduction mechanism we obtain the corresponding results. We also try to incorporate the gauge field into the reduction, roughly identifying Aμ with Nμ which is the shift vector in the ADM-like decomposition of space–time metric. In the end, we extend to the gravitational field, and obtain a relation [Formula: see text] with a cutoff factor κ, from a different view.

First, the Coset Space Dimensional Reduction scheme and the best particle physics model so far resulting from it are reviewed. Then, a higher-dimensional theory in which the extra dimensions are fuzzy coset spaces is described and a dimensional reduction to four-dimensional theory is performed. Afterwards, another scheme including fuzzy extra dimensions is presented, but this time the starting theory is four-dimensional while the fuzzy extra dimensions are generated dynamically. The resulting theory and its particle content is discussed. Besides the particle physics models discussed above, gravity theories as gauge theories are reviewed and then, the whole methodology is modified in the case that the background spacetimes are noncommutative. For this reason, specific covariant fuzzy spaces are introduced and, eventually, the program is written for both the 3-d and 4-d cases.

We provide the basics of a 2-dimensional theory of automata on series-parallel biposets. We define recognizable, regular and rational sets of series-parallel biposets and study their relationship. Moreover, we relate these classes to languages of series-parallel biposets definable in monadic second-order logic.

Nontrivial twisted boundary conditions associated with extra compact dimensions can produce an ambiguity in the value of the four-dimensional coupling constants of the renormalizable interactions of the twisted fields' zero-modes. Resolving this indeterminacy would require a knowledge of the exact form of the higher dimensional action including the coefficients of higher-dimensional operators. For the case of moderately sized extra dimensions, the uncertainty in the coupling constants can be of order one and may lead to modifications in the stability of the model.

Abstract We derive the general anomaly polynomial for a class of two-dimensional CFTs arising as twisted compactifications of a higher-dimensional theory on compact manifolds ℳd, including the contribution of the isometries of ℳd. We then use the result to per- form a counting of microstates for electrically charged and rotating supersymmetric black strings in AdS5× S5 and AdS7× S4 with horizon topology BTZt⋉S2 and BTZt⋉S2×$$ {\Sigma}_{\mathfrak{g}} $$ Σ g , respectively, where $$ {\Sigma}_{\mathfrak{g}} $$ Σ g is a Riemann surface. We explicitly construct the latter class of solutions by uplifting a class of four-dimensional rotating black holes. We provide a microscopic explanation of the entropy of such black holes by using a charged version of the Cardy formula.

Abstract We consider consequences of triviality of cobordism classes and anomaly cancellation in supergravity theories in d > 6. We argue that this leads to the existence of certain defects which we call “I-folds” (a generalization of orientifolds). The requirement that compactifications to lower dimensions involving these defects be anomaly free leads to conditions on the higher dimensional theory. We show that in theories with 16 supercharges in d > 6 this leads to restrictions on the rank of the allowed gauge groups and thus provides an explanation for the observed restrictions in known string theory constructions. In particular, in eight and nine dimensions the only solutions to our constraints are precisely the ones realized in string theory compactifications. We also use these techniques to place constraints on the global structure of the gauge group in eight and nine dimensions.
