Cet article aborde les relations entre le langage visuel et les émotions. Cette exploration se compose de deux volets : le premier est consacré aux forces textualisées dans l’image, le second aux gestualités émotionnelles, à savoir aux pratiques énonciatives du corps qui accompagnent l’interprétation et l’appréciation des images. La première partie discute la contribution de René Thom à la réflexion sur les émotions de la contemplation esthétique face au déploiement des forces dans les tableaux ; tandis que la deuxième partie met en contraste l’analyse manuelle et l’analyse computationnelle au regard des gestes de l’analyste et de l’observateur. L’analyse manuelle est illustrée à travers la pratique d’enseignement de Roland Barthes au Collège de France, l’analyse computationnelle est en revanche prise en examen à partir des expériences de Lev Manovich et des Cultural Analytics.

This chapter charts the process whereby the text of Barthes’s La Chambre claire sidelines form as a critical concern applicable to photography. An overview of the value system he brings to photography (quite unlike the one he applies to the Novel in the lectures he was delivering contemporaneously) shows that the priority accorded to the referent over the photo as such, to authentication (“ça-a-été”) over representation, and to the disturbing punctum over the disturbed studium, necessarily entails the priority of force over form, not least because each dominant term in these pairs undermines the value of the photograph as something outwardly visual and concretely visible. Force, or intensity, can be tracked not just in the photograph, but also in Barthes’s emotions, whether as beholder of the photo, son in mourning, or essayist repudiating critical sterility, proposing instead to construct a personal phenomenology incorporating the force of affect. A short conclusion via the ideas of René Thom on salient and pregnant forms will suggest a way of bridging the gap between form and force.

Les contributions aux études sur la négociation collective sont fondées soit sur une analyse verbale qui comprend l'idée d'une zone d'indétermination, soit sur une analyse davantage quantitative qui repose sur les techniques de la théorie du jeu. Les deux groupes recourent essentiellement à des modèles statiques comprenant des variables qui changent peu. L'expérience indique, cependant, qu'une même suite d'événements peut mener d'un comportement de départ ferme à des changements brusques et dramatiques d'attitudes. Mathématiquement, de tels phénomènes ne sont pas «sages» (well-behaved) et de pareilles «manques de suite» conduisent à des problèmes insolubles. Un tel mode de comportement ressortait de la plupart des modèles jusqu'à ce que René Thom invente la trouvaille mathématique analytique connue sous le nom de théorie de la catastrophe, théorie que l'on applique dans plusieurs sciences, y compris, à l'heure actuelle, en économique. La théorie de la catastrophe la plus usitée est la catastrophe de «pointe», et c'est cette dernière qu'on applique dans le présent article. L'idée fondamentale en est qu'un syndicat, du moment où il entreprend la négociation d'une convention collective, peut s'y engager sans beaucoup de conviction, mais il peut soudainement changer de position. S'il doit affronter simultanément des risques considérables et de fortes provocations, il peut devenir très docile ou, tout à coup, très agressif. L'attitude qu'on prend dépend pour beaucoup des opinions qui prévalent à l'intérieur du syndicat immédiatement avant le changement draconien dans le comportement du groupe. La «frontière» qui sépare un comportement docile d'un comportement agressif de la part du syndicat est en réalité un «territoire». Le changement dramatique d'attitude ne se produit qu'après que le «territoire» est traverse. Une suite de petits changements en influant sur les variables peut avoir pour résultat un grand bouleversement (une catastrophe) dans le comportement du syndicat.

René Thom(5) has shown that if the state of a system is determined by the local minimization of a potential – that is, if the system is so highly dissipative that transients can safely be ignored–then, though a smooth change in the potential function may give rise to a discontinuous change of state, the ways in which this can happen are quite limited. Infact, if we have at most a four-parameter family of potentials, discontinuities of this kind can occur in only seven ways up to local diffeotype, if they are to be structurally stable. (This latter condition is the requirement that it be im-possible to alter the discontinuity type by an arbitrarily small perturbation of the family of potentials: roughly it requires that the behaviour of the system, considered as a function of possible families ofpotentials, be ‘continuous’ at the family concerned. It bears the same relationship as does continuity to computability: a computer given approximately correct data for which to compute the value of a function or the behaviour of a system will give an approximately correct answer if the function is continuous, the system structurally stable. If not, only analytic methods will serve, and the physical significance of the result will be dubious. Fortunately, in the dimensions with which we are concerned, structural stability is an open dense property in the space of possible families of potentials; thus unstable systems can be ignored for almost all purposes, just as we ignore the ‘possibility’ of balancing a pin on its point.)
