In order to study when these rings are GCD domains, we also provide results in the more general setting of directed unions of GCD domains.

This research work deals with mathematical modeling in complex biological systems in which several types of individuals coexist in various populations. Migratory phenomena among the populations are allowed. We propose a class of mathematical models to describe the demographic dynamics of these type of complex systems. The probability model is defined through a sequence of random matrices in which rows and columns represent the various populations and the several types of individuals, respectively. We prove that this stochastic sequence can be studied under the general setting provided by the multitype branching process theory. Probabilistic properties and limiting results are then established. As application, we present an illustrative example about the population dynamics of biological systems formed by long-lived raptor colonies.

Abstract This paper generalizes the classical theory of perturbation of eigenvalues up to cover the most general setting where the operator surface 𝔏 : [ a , b ] × [ c , d ] → Φ 0 ⁢ ( U , V ) {\mathfrak{L}:[a,b]\times[c,d]\to\Phi_{0}(U,V)} , ( λ , μ ) ↦ 𝔏 ⁢ ( λ , μ ) {(\lambda,\mu)\mapsto\mathfrak{L}(\lambda,\mu)} , depends continuously on the perturbation parameter, μ, and holomorphically, as well as nonlinearly, on the spectral parameter, λ, where Φ 0 ⁢ ( U , V ) {\Phi_{0}(U,V)} stands for the set of Fredholm operators of index zero between U and V. The main result is a substantial extension of a classical finite-dimensional theorem of T. Kato (see [T. Kato, Perturbation Theory for Linear Operators, 2nd ed., Class. Math., Springer, Berlin, 1995, Chapter 2, Section 5]).

AbstractWe consider the construction of semi-implicit linear multistep methods that can be applied to time-dependent PDEs where the separation of scales in additive form, typically used in implicit-explicit (IMEX) methods, is not possible. As shown in Boscarino et al. (J. Sci. Comput. 68: 975–1001, 2016) for Runge-Kutta methods, these semi-implicit techniques give a great flexibility, and allow, in many cases, the construction of simple linearly implicit schemes with no need of iterative solvers. In this work, we develop a general setting for the construction of high order semi-implicit linear multistep methods and analyze their stability properties for a prototype linear advection-diffusion equation and in the setting of strong stability preserving (SSP) methods. Our findings are demonstrated on several examples, including nonlinear reaction-diffusion and convection-diffusion problems.

The field of Paediatric Bioethics, or ethical issues applied to children's healthcare, is relatively new but has recently gained an increased professional and public profile. Clinical ethics support to health professionals and patients who face ethical challenges in clinical practice varies between and within institutions. Literature regarding services available to paediatricians is sparse in specialist tertiary centres and almost absent in general paediatrics. We performed a mixed-methods study using online surveys and focus groups to explore the experiences of ethical and legal dilemmas and the support structures available to (i) paediatric intensive care teams as a proxy for specialist children's centres and (ii) paediatricians working in the general setting in the UK. Our main findings illustrate the broad range of ethical and legal challenges experienced by both groups in daily practice. Ethics training and the availability of ethics support were variable in structure, processes, funding and availability, e.g., 70% of paediatric intensive care consultants reported access to formal ethics advice versus 20% general paediatricians. Overall, our findings suggest a need for ethics support and training in both settings. The broad experience reported of ethics support, where it existed, was good – though improvements were suggested. Many clinicians were concerned about their relationship with children and families experiencing a challenging ethical situation, partly as a result of high-profile recent legal cases in the media. Further research in this area would help collect a broader range of views to inform clinical ethics support's development to better support paediatric teams, children and their families.

AbstractIn this paper, we establish quantitative estimates for nonlinear sampling Kantorovich operators in terms of the modulus of smoothness in the setting of Orlicz spaces. This general frame allows us to directly deduce some quantitative estimates of approximation in $$L^{p}$$ L p -spaces, $$1\le p<\infty $$ 1 ≤ p < ∞ , and in other well-known instances of Orlicz spaces, such as the Zygmung and the exponential spaces. Further, the qualitative order of approximation has been obtained assuming f in suitable Lipschitz classes. The above estimates achieved in the general setting of Orlicz spaces, have been also improved in the $$L^p$$ L p -case, using a direct approach suitable to this context. At the end, we consider the particular cases of the nonlinear sampling Kantorovich operators constructed by using some special kernels.

We compare different treatments of the constraints in canonical quantum gravity. The standard approach on the superspace of 3-geometries treats the constraints as the sole carriers of the dynamic content of the theory, thus rendering the traditional dynamical equations obsolete. Quantization of the constraints in both the Dirac and ADM square root Hamiltonian approaches leads to the well known problems of time evolution. These problems of time are of both an interpretational and technical nature. In contrast, the geometrodynamic quantization procedure on the superspace of the true dynamical variables separates the issues of quantization from the enforcement of the constraints. The resulting theory takes into account states that are off-shell with respect to the constraints, and thus avoids the problems of time. We develop, for the first time, the geometrodynamic quantization formalism in a general setting and show that it retains all essential features previously illustrated in the context of homogeneous cosmologies.

Let X be a domain in a closed polarized complex manifold (Y,L), where L is a (semi-) positive line bundle over Y. Any given Hermitian metric on L induces by restriction to X a Hilbert space structure on the space of global holomorphic sections on Y with values in the k-th tensor power of L (also using a volume form ωn on X. In this paper the leading large k asymptotics for the corresponding Bergman kernels and metrics are obtained in the case when X is a pseudo-concave domain with smooth boundary (under a certain compatibility assumption). The asymptotics are expressed in terms of the curvature of L and the boundary of X. The convergence of the Bergman metrics is obtained in a more general setting where (X,ωn) is replaced by any measure satisfying a Bernstein–Markov property. As an application the (generalized) equilibrium measure of the polarized pseudo-concave domain X is computed explicitly. Applications to the zero and mass distribution of random holomorphic sections and the eigenvalue distribution of Toeplitz operators will be described elsewhere.

The concepts of ω-consistency and ω-completeness are closely related. The former concept has been generalized to notions of Γ-consistency and strong Γ-consistency, which are applicable not only to formal systems of number theory, but to all functional calculi containing individual constants; and in this general setting the semantical significance of these concepts has been studied. In the present work we carry out an analogous generalization for the concept of ω-completeness.Suppose, then, that F is an applied functional calculus, and that Γ is a non-empty set of individual constants of F. We say that F is Γ-complete if, whenever B(x) is a formula (containing the single free individual variable x) such that ⊦ B(α) for every α in Γ, then also ⊦ (x)B(x). In the paper “Γ-con” a sequence of increasingly strong concepts, Γ-consistency, n = 1,2, 3,…, was introduced; and it is possible in a formal way to define corresponding concepts of Γn-completeness, as follows. We say that F is Γn-complete if, whenever B(x1,…, xn) is a formula (containing exactly n distinct free variables, namely x1…, xn) such that ⊦ B(α1,…,αn) for all α1,…,αn in Γ, then also ⊦ (X1)…(xn)B(x1,…,xn). However, unlike the situation encountered in the paper “Γ-con”, these definitions are not of interest – for the simple reason that F is Γn-complete if and only if it is Γ-complete, as one easily sees.
