Context. Over short time-intervals, planetary ephemerides have traditionally been represented in analytical form as finite sums of periodic terms or sums of Poisson terms that are periodic terms with polynomial amplitudes. This representation is not well adapted for the evolution of planetary orbits in the solar system over million of years which present drifts in their main frequencies as a result of the chaotic nature of their dynamics. Aims. We aim to develop a numerical algorithm for slowly diffusing solutions of a perturbed integrable Hamiltonian system that will apply for the representation of chaotic planetary motions with varying frequencies. Methods. By simple analytical considerations, we first argue that it is possible to exactly recover a single varying frequency. Then, a function basis involving time-dependent fundamental frequencies is formulated in a semi-analytical way. Finally, starting from a numerical solution, a recursive algorithm is used to numerically decompose the solution into the significant elements of the function basis. Results. Simple examples show that this algorithm can be used to give compact representations of different types of slowly diffusing solutions. As a test example, we show that this algorithm can be successfully applied to obtain a very compact approximation of the La2004 solution of the orbital motion of the Earth over 40 Myr ([−35 Myr, 5 Myr]). This example was chosen because this solution is widely used in the reconstruction of the past climates.

We initiate a study of structural properties of the quotient algebra ${\mathcal{K}}(X)/{\mathcal{A}}(X)$ of the compact-by-approximable operators on Banach spaces $X$ failing the approximation property. Our main results and examples include the following: (i) there is a linear isomorphic embedding from $c_{0}$ into ${\mathcal{K}}(Z)/{\mathcal{A}}(Z)$ , where $Z$ belongs to the class of Banach spaces constructed by Willis that have the metric compact approximation property but fail the approximation property, (ii) there is a linear isomorphic embedding from a nonseparable space $c_{0}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4})$ into ${\mathcal{K}}(Z_{FJ})/{\mathcal{A}}(Z_{FJ})$ , where $Z_{FJ}$ is a universal compact factorisation space arising from the work of Johnson and Figiel.

In our previous paper I (del Valle–Turbiner, 2019) a formalism was developed to study the general [Formula: see text]-dimensional radial anharmonic oscillator with potential [Formula: see text]. It was based on the Perturbation Theory (PT) in powers of [Formula: see text] (weak coupling regime) and in inverse, fractional powers of [Formula: see text] (strong coupling regime) in both [Formula: see text]-space and in [Formula: see text]-space, respectively. As a result, the Approximant was introduced — a locally-accurate uniform compact approximation of a wave function. If taken as a trial function in variational calculations, it has led to variational energies of unprecedented accuracy for cubic anharmonic oscillator. In this paper, the formalism is applied to both quartic and sextic, spherically-symmetric radial anharmonic oscillators with two term potentials [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], respectively. It is shown that a two-parametric Approximant for quartic oscillator and a five-parametric one for sextic oscillator for the first four eigenstates used to calculate the variational energy are accurate in 8–12 figures for any [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], while the relative deviation of the Approximant from the exact eigenfunction is less than [Formula: see text] for any [Formula: see text].

AbstractWe show that if x is a strongly extreme point of a bounded closed convex subset of a Banach space and the identity has a geometrically and topologically good enough local approximation at x, then x is already a denting point. It turns out that such an approximation of the identity exists at any strongly extreme point of the unit ball of a Banach space with the unconditional compact approximation property. We also prove that every Banach space with a Schauder basis can be equivalently renormed to satisfy the suõcient conditions mentioned.
