Linear relations have been obtained between the logarithms of the biological degradation rate of phenol and aniline derivatives and the substituent constants σ accounting for their electronic effects. The reaction constant in the Hammett equation is negative; the biological degradation rate is negatively affected by electron-withdrawing substituents. Of the OH, CH3, Cl, NO2, and NH2 substituents tested, only amino group led to deviations from the linear correlations for monosubstituted phenols. The rate of degradation of the aromatic system seems to be controlled by electronic effects, the limiting stage being the electrophilic substitution; correlations using the steric or lipophilic constants failed.

The scarcity of nitrogen in Earth’s crust, combined with challenging synthesis, have made inorganic nitrides a relatively-unexplored class of compounds compared to their naturally-abundant oxide counterparts. To facilitate exploration of their compositional space via <i>a priori</i> modeling, and to help <i>a posteriori</i> structure verification not limited to inferring the oxidation state of redox-active cations, we derive a suite of bond-valence parameters and Lewis-acid strength values for 76 cations observed bonding to N<sup>3-</sup>, and further outline a baseline statistical knowledge of bond lengths for these compounds. We examine structural and electronic effects responsible for the functional properties and anomalous bonding behavior of inorganic nitrides, and identify promising venues for exploring uncharted compositional spaces beyond the reach of high-throughput computational methods. We find that many mechanisms of bond-length variation ubiquitous to oxide and oxysalt compounds (e.g., lone-pair stereoactivity, the Jahn-Teller and pseudo Jahn-Teller effects) are similarly pervasive in inorganic nitrides, and are occasionally observed to result in greater distortion magnitude than their oxide counterparts. We identify inorganic nitrides with multiply-bonded metal ions as a promising venue in heterogeneous catalysis, e.g. in the development of a post-Haber-Bosch process proceeding at milder reaction conditions, thus representing further opportunity in the thriving exploration of the functional properties of this emerging class of materials.<br>

Catalytic deoxygenation of coal enhances the stability and combustion performance of coal-derived liquids. However, determination of the selectivity of removal of oxygen atoms incorporated in or residing outside of aromatic rings is challenging. This limits the ability to evaluate the success of catalytic deoxygenation processes. A mass spectrometric method, in-source collision-activated dissociation (ISCAD), combined with high resolution product ion detection, is demonstrated to allow the determination of whether the oxygen atoms in aromatic compounds reside outside of aromatic rings or are part of the aromatic system, because alkyl chains can be removed from aromatic cores via ISCAD. Application of this method for the analysis of a subbituminous coal treated using a supported catalyst revealed that the catalytic treatment reduced the number of oxygen-containing heteroaromatic rings but not the number of oxygen atoms residing outside the aromatic rings.<br>

This article describes direct photoalkylation of electron-rich aromatic compounds with diazo compoiunds. C-2 alkylated indoles and pyrroles are obtained with good yields even though the photocatalyst (Ru(bpy)3Cl2) loading is as low as 0.075 mol %. For substrates bearing electron-withdrawing substituents the addition of a catalytic amount of N,N-dimethyl-4-methoxyaniline is required. Both EWG-EWG and EWG-EDG substituted diazo esters are suitable as alkylating agents. The reaction selectivity and mechanistic experiments suggest that carbenes/carbenoid intermediates are not involved in the reaction pathway, instead radical formation is proposed.

<div>Methods to catalytically introduce deuterium in synthetically useful yields ortho to a carboxylic acid directing group on arenes typically requires D2 or CD3CO2D, which makes using these approaches cost prohibitive for large scale synthesis (equipment and reagent costs respectively). Herein we present a simplified approach using catalytic RhIII and D2O as deuterium source, and show its application to H/D exchange on various acidic substrates.</div>
