This article presents a method for extracting a conceptual schema from a relational database. The method is based on an analysis of data manipulation statements in the code of an application using a relational DBMS. Attributes representing references between tables in the relational schema and possible keys are determined by an analysis of join conditions in queries and view definitions. Knowledge about which attributes link tables is used to investigate the database extension in a selective manner. When the keys cannot be unambiguously determined, possible solutions are generated by the system under guidance of the user. The approach makes it possible to efficiently construct a conceptual schema from only rudimentary information.

This article discusses the process of enterprise knowledge extraction from relational database and source code of legacy information systems. Problems of legacy systems and main solutions for them are briefly described here. The uses of data reverse engineering and program understanding techniques to automatically infer as much as possible the schema and semantics of a legacy information system is analyzed. Eight step data reverse engineering algorithm for knowledge extraction from legacy systems is provided. A hypothetical example of knowledge extraction from legacy information system is presented.

This paper proposes a framework for the extract-transform-load (ETL) of the Chinese style cross-tab. It makes a reverse engineering process for the Chinese style report. That is to say, converting the report to its original scheme of relational database table, and then making an ETL processing on the two-dimensional table. And ultimately load the data into the fact tables. Finally, we discuss implementation issues and we present the design and experiment of the system based on our framework.
