The role of electromagnetic interactions in nuclear physics

I describe the long-standing search for a “smoking-gun” signal for the manifestation of (scale-)chiral symmetry in nuclear interactions. It is prompted by Gerry Brown’s last unpublished note, reproduced verbatim below, on the preeminent role of pions and vector ([Formula: see text]) mesons in providing a simple and elegant description of strongly correlated nuclear interactions. In this note written in tribute to Gerry Brown, I first describe a case of an unambiguous signal in axial-charge transitions in nuclei and then combine his ideas with the more recent development on the role of hidden symmetries in nuclear physics. What transpires is the surprising conclusion that the Landau–Migdal fixed point interaction [Formula: see text], the nuclear tensor forces and Brown–Rho scaling, all encoded in scale-invariant hidden local symmetry, as Gerry put, “run the show and make all forces equal.”

Tony Lane came from humble beginnings to become one of the world's leading theoretical nuclear physicists. His career in the Theoretical Physics Division at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE) at Harwell was characterized by his outstanding successes in explaining experimental nuclear data. He pioneered the understanding of the important nucleon capture reactions by introducing new mechanisms of direct and semi-direct capture and, together with colleagues, he greatly advanced knowledge of nuclear analogue states, and the role of isospin in nuclear physics. With R. G. Thomas, he wrote a comprehensive review of R-matrix theory, applied to analyse resonances in nuclear reactions, which became one of the most cited papers in physics. His book Nuclear theory gave a good account of the use of pairing force theory in nuclear physics, and its application to nuclear collective motion.

The development of atomic and nuclear physics, the efficient use of nuclear energy plays an important role in the international arena. The structure of the atom and the nucleus, the training of internationally advanced personnel to improve the use of its energy is a topical issue today. The role of atomic and nuclear physics in education, science and industry in our country is wide. However, taking into account the fact that the introduction of modern and new areas of nuclear physics, such as radiation physics, deformed nucleus physics, into the system of continuing education will further increase the efficiency of specialists trained in this field.

The status of RHIC theory and phenomenology is reviewed with an emphasis on the indications for the creation of a new deconfined state of matter. The critical role of high energy nuclear physics in the development of theoretical tools that address various aspects of the QCD many body dynamics is highlighted. The perspectives for studying nuclear matter under even more extreme conditions at the LHC and the overlap with high energy physics is discussed.

ABSTRACT Early efforts to bring particle accelerators into Brazil exemplify the interactions between advanced scientific countries and the periphery in the years 1948––1956 and between the history of science and the history of foreign affairs. The physicists Cesar Lattes, Ernest Lawrence, Herbert Anderson, Isidor Rabi, and Rear Admiral ÁÁlvaro Alberto played central roles in these efforts. The story brings out the role of the military and scientists acting within the Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisas Fíísicas and the Conselho Nacional de Pesquisas to promote nuclear physics research aimed at the development of nuclear technology in Brazil. The decision-making process involved science, politics, secret agreements, and international affairs.

Applying the microscopic nuclear physics ideas for fusion reactions to macroscopic galactic systems, we study the evolution of the compact binary galaxy in mass asymmetry (transfer) coordinate. The conditions for the formation of stable symmetric binary galaxy are analyzed. The role of symmetrization of asymmetric binary galaxy in the transformation of gravitational energy into internal energy of galaxies accompanied by the release of a large amount of energy during the symmetrization process is revealed.
