A series of Ba-Al-O NSR supports and Pt/Ba-Al-O NSR catalysts are prepared by co-precipitation and impregnation method in this work. The catalyst and the support are characterized by XRD, SEM, SBET performance testing. The structure and texture of the supports is observed and discussed. The results of SBET indicate that the supports possess relative high specific surface area (94~110 m2/g). Temperature programmed reduction is characterized by means of H2-TPR.

AbstractThis study focuses on the mineralogical characterization of four raw clay samples from Dobrodo deposit, Serbia. Several analytical methods were applied to determine the chemical and mineralogical composition, morphology and physical properties (colour, plasticity, specific surface area, particle size and cation-exchange capacity) of the clay samples. Kaolinite, smectite and illite are the predominant phases in all of the samples studied that contain between 60.2 and 87.1 wt.% of clay. Quartz, feldspars, paragonite and Ti- and Fe-bearing phases were also identified. The relatively high SiO2/Al2O3 mass ratio indicates abundant quartz. The cation-exchange capacity of the samples varied between low and moderately charged clay minerals (12–52 mmol 100 g–1) with specific surface area values ranging from 94 to 410 m2 g–1. The plasticity index values (11–23%) suggest low to moderate plasticity. Preliminary results show that most of the raw clay from Dobrodo deposit might be suitable for use in ceramic applications.

Cu doped CeO2 nanopowder was synthesized by hydrothermal process at 180°C for 2~10h. The average size and distribution of the synthesized Cu doped CeO2 nanopowder was controlled by reaction times. The crystallinity of the synthesized Cu doped CeO2 nanoparticles was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The morphology of the synthesized Cu doped CeO2 nanoparticles was observed by FE-SEM. The specific surface area of the synthesized Cu doped CeO2 nanoparticles was measured by BET. The crystal size of the synthesized Cu doped CeO2 nanoparticles decreased with decreasing reaction times. The average size of the synthesized Cu doped CeO2 nanoparticles was below 10nm and narrow, respectively. The shape of the synthesized Cu doped CeO2 nanoparticles was spherical type. The specific surface area of the synthesized Cu doped CeO2 nanoparticles increased with decreasing reaction times. Antibacterial properties of Cu doped CeO2 were analyzed by MIC method. The synthesized Cu doped CeO2 nanopowders showed antibacterial properties against E.coli and B.sub bacteria.

Iron ore reduction and carbon deposition in pure CO was investigated by using thermogravimetric (TG) method over the temperature range of 0-1200°C. The results of the work may be summarized as follows: in CO stream, carbon deposition occurred below 900°C, no carbon deposition was found above 1000°C. X-Ray analysis of the reacted sample indicated that the carbon deposition occurred with the iron was reduced. The iron reduction process and carbon deposition occurred simultaneously. The rate of carbon deposition changed with the transformation of iron oxides. The specific surface area and pore structure of reduced samples were analyzed. The specific surface area changed with the amount of carbon deposition.

AbstractThe specific surface area (SSA) is considered an essential microstructural parameter for the characterization of snow. Photography in the near-infrared (NIR) spectrum is sensitive to the SSA. We calculated the snow reflectance from calibrated NIR images of snow-pit walls and measured the SSA of samples obtained at the same locations. This new method is used to map the snow stratigraphy. The correlation between reflectance and SSA was found to be 90%. Calibrated NIR photography allows quantitative determination of SSA and its spatial variation in a snow profile in two dimensions within an uncertainty of 15%. In an image covering 0.5–1.0 m2, even layers of 1mm thickness can be documented and measured. Spatial maps of SSA are an important tool in initializing and validating physical and chemical models of the snowpack.

ABSTRACTA halloysite clay from Nador (NE Morocco) was studied to evaluate its suitability in the ceramics industry. A cross-section involving all the Messinian facies was performed in the Melilla Neogene basin, at the foot of the Gourougou volcano, to establish the origin of the halloysite and estimate its reserves. White layers of halloysite and red clays rich in smectite occurring in contact with basal-reef limestone were characterized by mineralogical (XRD, IR), textural (SEM) and physico-chemical analyses (grain-size, Atterberg limits, DTA/TG, XRF and specific surface area). Ceramic properties were evaluated for halloysite fired from 500 to 1100°C to evaluate technical processing for ceramic production.The halloysite clay consists of fine particles with a high plasticity and a large specific surface area. The XRD investigation revealed the presence of 7 Å non-hydrated halloysite along with gibbsite, alunite, K-feldspar and traces of smectite and illite.The presence of halloysite was confirmed from the characteristic IR bands at 3695 and 3618 cm−1and the predominance of tubular crystals observed in the SEM. The chemical analysis revealed high contents linked to the presence of Al-rich phases (gibbsite and alunite). DTA/TG and XRD results of fired clay samples proved the dehydroxylation of halloysite and a rearrangement of metakaolinite to form mullite and spinel at 975°C.The Moroccan halloysite might be suitable for refractory ceramic applications. However, addition of quartz sand might be necessary to avoid crack development during firing and to reduce the plasticity of raw halloysite and minimize shrinkage during sintering.

Mesoporous AlOOH was synthesized by hydrothermal treatment from aluminium nitrate and NaOH or KOH. The effect of NaOH and KOH as precipitating agents on the characterization of samples were investigated. xrd, ftir, fesem and N<sub>2</sub> adsorption-desorption analytical techniques were used to characterize the products. Our results showed that using KOH as precipitating agent was favourable for the formation of mesoporous and crystalline AlOOH with high bet-specific surface area of 98 m<sup>2</sup>/g.
