Yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) has become a significant technological material due to its high ionic conductivity, chemical inertness, and good mechanical properties. Temperatures on the order of 1700°C are required, however, to densify YSZ to the degree necessary for good electrical and mechanical properties. A technique for lowering the densification temperature is the addition of small amounts of material which facilitate the formation of a liquid phase at comparatively low temperatures. In this study, sintered microstructures obtained from the use of Al2O3 as a sintering aid were examined with scanning, transmission, and scanning transmission microscopy (SEM, TEM, and STEM).

As a light-weight material with high stiffness and strength, cellular metal has attracted a lot of attentions in the past two decades. In this paper, the structure and mechanical properties of aluminum cellular metal with periodic cubic cells are studied. The aluminum cellular metal is fabricated by sheet metal stamping and simple adhesion. Two sizes of specimens with cell sizes of 3mm and 5mm are fabricated. Their relative density and mechanical properties are tested by means of experiments. The results show that the cubic-cell cellular metal has high and predictable strength and hence, can be used for many practical applications.

In some applications such as automotive oxygen sensor, 5mol% Y2O3stabilized zirconia (5YSZ) is generally used because it has both excellent ionic conductivity and mechanical properties. The automotive oxygen sensor would experience a cyclic change from high temperature (engine running) environment to the low temperature damp environment (in the tail pipe when vehicle stops). The conductivity change with coupled conditions of thermal cycle and dump environment in the 5mol%Y2O3ZrO2(5YSZ) system was examined by XRD,Impedance spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (SEM) in this paper.

When the ductile iron which is also known as Spheroidal Graphite (SG) iron, is subjected to austempering heat treatment, the material is known as austempered ductile iron (ADI). This material has good mechanical properties and has various applications in different fields. This revolutionary material with its excellent combination of strength, ductility, toughness and wear resistance has the potential to replace some of the commonly used conventional materials such as steel, aluminium and other light weight alloys as it offers production advantage as well. One of the problems encountered during manufacturing is machining of ADI parts owing to its high hardness and wear resistance. Many researchers over a period of time have reported the machinability aspects of the ADI. This paper presents a review on the developments made on the machinability aspects of ADI along with other mechanical properties.
