Paleoenvironmental reconstructions are increasingly being used in conservation biology, ecosystem management, and evaluations of ecosystem services (ES), but their potential to contribute to the ES risk assessment process has not been explored. We propose that the long-term history of the ecosystem provides valuable information that augments and strengthens an ES risk assessment and that it should be considered routinely when undertaking risk assessments. We adjusted a standard ecosystem-based risk management (EBRM) protocol to include paleoenvironmental data, and tested the modified approach on two coastal lagoons in South America. Paleolimnological reconstructions in both lagoons indicate that salinity and nutrients (in Laguna de Rocha), and salinity (in Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta), as controlled by hydrologic connectivity with the ocean and freshwater tributaries, have been the key variables behind ecosystem’s function. This understanding, applied to inform various components and steps in the EBRM protocol, suggests that the maintenance of hydrological connections should be a management priority to minimize risk to ES. This work illustrates the utility of including paleoenvironmental data in an EBRM context and highlights the need for a more holistic approach to risk management by incorporating the long-term history of ecosystem function.

Risk is inherent in all parts of life and brings consequences, but when it specifically emerges in supply chains, it is susceptible. Therefore, this study aims at identifying and assessing supply chain risks and developing criteria for managing these risks. Supply chain (SC) risks consist of complex, uncertain, and vague information, but risk assessment techniques in the literature have been unable to handle complexity, uncertainty, and vagueness. Therefore, this study presents a holistic approach to supply chain risk management. In this paper, neutrosophic (N) theory is merged with the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) to deal with complexity, uncertainty, and vagueness. Then the proposed methodology is practically implemented through a case study on the automotive industry. SC resilience, SC agility, and SC robustness were selected as criteria for managing supply chain risks and analyzed using N-AHP. Furthermore, seventeen risks were identified and assessed by using N-TOPSIS. Results suggest supply chain resilience is the most important criterion for managing supply chain risks. Moreover, supplier delivery delays, supplier quality problems, supplier communication failures, and forecasting errors are the most vulnerable risks that occur in supply chains of the automotive industry in Pakistan.

Although the risk assessment discipline has been studied from long ago as a means to support security investment decision-making, no holistic approach exists to continuously and quantitatively analyze cyber risks in scenarios where attacks and defenses may target different parts of Internet of Things (IoT)-based smart grid systems. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive methodology that enables informed decisions on security protection for smart grid systems by the continuous assessment of cyber risks. The solution is based on the use of attack defense trees modelled on the system and computation of the proposed risk attributes that enables an assessment of the system risks by propagating the risk attributes in the tree nodes. The method allows system risk sensitivity analyses to be performed with respect to different attack and defense scenarios, and optimizes security strategies with respect to risk minimization. The methodology proposes the use of standard security and privacy defense taxonomies from internationally recognized security control families, such as the NIST SP 800-53, which facilitates security certifications. Finally, the paper describes the validation of the methodology carried out in a real smart building energy efficiency application that combines multiple components deployed in cloud and IoT resources. The scenario demonstrates the feasibility of the method to not only perform initial quantitative estimations of system risks but also to continuously keep the risk assessment up to date according to the system conditions during operation.

This paper deals with the performance optimization of occupational safety and health management (OSHM) with the help of the integration of near miss management into existing KPIs of the company. In this context, two independent processes are carried out: risk assessment and near miss management. In this work, the holistic view of these two processes is investigated as an optimization potential OSHM. Based on a literature review, the framework of the qualitative method applied here is established. After definitions and general information concerning OSHM, the processes of risk assessment and near miss management in different organisations (23 international plants for risk assessment and 6 German plants for near miss management) with established processes according to BPM are examined. The chosen approach is combined with the method of the PDCA cycle to relate the results of the investigation to the CIP existing in the OSHM. The result was elaborated in the form of a recommendation for action: optimization of existing processes, integrated hazard and near miss management as a more sustainable solution and proposal for the implementation of a KPI for better control of incidents based on predictive risk assessment.

In the paper there is presented a new holistic approach to an analysis and assessment of organization processes risks by an application of dynamic modelling. It relates to a procedure, allowing to make provision for and to ensure, in addition to characteristic mutual relationship in organization processes with partners, also their dynamics and indefiniteness of the environment, multicriterial assessment of processes, and a general optimization from a point of defined indicators, an aggregate analyses and assessment of organization processes risks. By help of such process there are firstly optimized all process variants of organisation. We can consider this as an added value, because the manager is disposing with results of holistic analysis and assessment of organization and process risks that means gaining of reliable information about potential risks (threats and opportunities) of an organization processes and resulting to some consequences including the opportunities. The information gained in such way results in many cases in a draft of new variants (innovations) of organization processes, by which the identified and evaluated risks are eliminated or application of an efficient strategies suggestion for their elimination. Holistic approach to an organization processes modelling has been applied on some selected manufacturing organizations, resulting in reliable results of risk analyses and assessment.

Background:Research in Health Risk Assessment is increasingly covering a preeminent role in health care studies. However, risk assessment faces the issue of properly measuring risk exposure.Objective:The aim of the study has been to tackle some methodological issues regarding the risk assessment analysis in the health field, giving more emphasis to a philosophical and epistemological approach in order to show the difficulties in adopting suitable exposure assessment techniques.Method:Here, we present a methodological review and a critical discussion of foreign body injuries articles in child population as a case study. A Medline, Econlite and CIS bibliographic search was conducted considering the term “foreign bodies” only in “children” and “risk”. Only English papers are considered. Further research on CDC, CPSC, DGSANCO databases has been performed. Different approaches in risk assessment are reviewed using four case-study papers with the purpose of pointing out their limitations.Result:Ten papers are retrieved though literature review reporting risk estimate of foreign bodies injuries in children.Conclusion:Considering that different variables affecting the risk of choking injuries, like intrinsic characteristic of a product or the intensity levels at which children are exposed, and then it seems very difficult to correctly evaluate risk of injuries. For this reason, we have argued for an epistemological and holistic approach toward risk assessment.
