Abstract Background Trichome initiation in Arabidopsis is regulated by a MYB-bHLH-WD40 (MBW) transcriptional activator complex formed by the R2R3 MYB transcription factor GLABRA1 (GL1), MYB23 or MYB82, the bHLH transcription factor GLABRA3 (GL3), ENHANCER OF GLABRA3 (EGL3) or TRANSPARENT TESTA8 (TT8), and the WD40-repeat protein TRANSPARENT TESTA GLABRA1 (TTG1). However, the functions of the rice homologs of the MBW complex proteins remained uncharacterized. Results Based on amino acid sequence identity and similarity, and protein interaction prediction, we identified OsGL1s, OsGL3s and OsTTG1s as rice homologs of the MBW complex proteins. By using protoplast transfection, we show that OsGL1D, OsGL1E, OsGL3B and OsTTG1A were predominantly localized in the nucleus, OsGL3B functions as a transcriptional activator and is able to interact with GL1 and TTG1. By using yeast two-hybrid and protoplast transfection assays, we show that OsGL3B is able to interact with OsGL1E and OsTTG1A, and OsGL1E and OsTTG1A are also able to interact with GL3. On the other hand, we found that OsGL1D functions as a transcription activator, and it can interact with GL3 but not OsGL3B. Furthermore, our results show that expression of OsTTG1A in the ttg1 mutant restored the phenotypes including alternations in trichome and root hair formation, seed color, mucilage production and anthocyanin biosynthesis, indicating that OsTTG1A and TTG1 may have similar functions. Conclusion These results suggest that the rice homologs of the Arabidopsis MBW complex proteins are able to form MBW complexes, but may have conserved and non-conserved functions.

This study aimed to estimate the effects of cold plasma (CP) and electromagnetic field (EMF) treatment of red clover (Trifolium pratense) seeds with different coat colors on germination kinetics, the content of seed phytohormones, and the growth of seedlings. Seeds of red clover cultivar ‘Arimaiciai’ were treated with radio-frequency EMF or capacitively coupled low-pressure CP for different durations. There were no differences in germination kinetics between yellow, brown, and dark purple seeds in control, but the germination rate of seeds treated with CP and EMF depended on seed color: The germination of yellow seeds was stimulated stronger compared to dark purple and brown seeds, and EMF did not stimulate germination in brown seeds. The content of phytohormones in control seeds and the shift in their amount induced by seed treatments were also strongly dependent on seed color. No relationship was found between the effect on germination kinetics and changes in phytohormone levels. In the control, seedlings growing from the yellow seeds were heavier, and the number of root nodules was 12.5 times larger compared to seedlings of dark purple seeds. Seed treatments with CP and EMF significantly increased the number of root nodules, and this effect was stronger in seedlings from dark purple seeds compared to those from yellow seeds.

AAC Vitality is a six-row spring feed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivar developed by the Eastern Cereal and Oilseed Research Centre, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. AAC Vitality had high grain yield, good resistance to lodging, and good resistance to straw break. It was late in heading and maturity. Its seed color was bright. AAC Vitality was moderately resistant to net blotch and spot blotch. AAC Vitality performs well in Ontario.

The effect of ethephon spray on leaves at pre-harvest stage to accelerate the ripening process of capsules and sesame defoliation was studied. Sesame plant was treated with ethephon at concentrations of 0, 50, 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 ppm when the capsules on plant began to mature, the seeds turned black. The results showed that ethephon treatment caused yellowing of leaves, accelerated defoliation and the growth time of sesame plants was shortened from 5 to 6 days compared to the control sample. In addition, the ethephon concentration of 50 and 100 ppm caused yellowing of leaves with chlorophyll index measured at 3 days after treatment was 13.5 and 12.7, respectively. At ethephone concentration of 200-500 ppm caused complete yellowing and defoliation of leaves in 3 days after treatment. The leaves of control sample were still green and had chlorophyll index of 22.2. Treatment of ethephon with concentrations of 50-300 ppm did not reduce the yield and lipid content in the seeds compared to the control sample, but from 400 ppm or more caused cracking of capsules, reducing yield and lipid content in the seeds. Ethephon treatment did not affect the number of capsules/plant, number of seeds/capsule, weight of 1000 seeds, protein content and seed color.

Control of quality standards is very important role in ensuring corn on the market. Corn seed quality standards are determined from the results of  classification process applied. So far, evaluation process of classification of corn seeds quality is still done manually which takes a long time and the quality of product is'nt evenly distributed. So, we need a tool to determine corn seeds quality to improve its quality. This study conducted color readings of corn seeds using  TCS230 color sensors and sorting  diameter of corn seeds using a small, medium, and large diameter sieve machine. The method for classifying quality standard of corn seed color uses fuzzy logic. The test was carried out by taking data from 3 TCS230 color sensors on each diameter of the sieve machine for corn seeds types used are BISI-2 and BIMA-19. The sensor accuracy is known by comparing data from sensor with data from Color Grab application. The reading results of BISI-2 on the color sensor-1 shows an accuracy rate of 0.3%, the color sensor-2 shows an accuracy rate of 0.72%, and the color sensor-3 shows an accuracy rate of 1.76%. For BIMA-19 corn seeds, the reading on color sensor-1 shows an accuracy of 1.11%, the color sensor-2 shows an accuracy of 24.6%, the color sensor-3 shows an accuracy of 1.10%. The results of fuzzy testing on BISI-2 and BIMA-19 showed that quality standard of maize seeds was good at medium and large diameters, while those on small diameters showed poor quality standards.

Abstract BackgroundYellow seed breeding is an effective method to improve the oil content in rapeseed. Yellow seed coat color formation is influenced by various factors, and no clear mechanisms are known. In this study, Bulked segregant RNA-Seq (BSR-Seq) of BC9 population of Wuqi mustard (yellow seed) and Wugong mustard (brown seed) was used to identity the candidate genes controlling the yellow seed color in Brassica juncea L.ResultsYellow seed coat color gene was mapped to chromosome A09, and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between brown and yellow bulks enriched in the flavonoid pathway. A significant correlation between the expression of BjF3H and BjTT5 and the content of the seed coat color related indexes was identified. Two intron polymorphism (IP) markers linked to the target gene were developed around BjF3H. Therefore, BjF3H was considered as the candidate gene. The BjF3H coding sequences (CDS) of Wuqi mustard and Wugong mustard are 1071-1077bp, encoding protein of 356-358 amino acids. One amino acid change (254, F/V) was identified in the conserved domain. This mutation site was detected in four Brassica rapa (B. rapa) and six Brassica juncea (B. juncea) lines, but not in Brassica napus (B. napus).ConclusionsThe results indicated BjF3H is a candidate gene that related to yellow seed coat color formation in Brassica juncea and provided a comprehensive understanding of the yellow seed coat color mechanism.
