The Sertoli cell tight junctional complexes have been shown to be the most important structural counterpart of the physiological blood-testis barrier. In freeze etch replicas they consist of extensive rows of intramembranous particles which are not only oriented parallel to one another, but to the myoid layer as well. Thus the occluding complex has both an internal and an overall orientation. However, this overall orientation to the myoid layer does not seem to be necessary to its barrier function. The 20 day old rat has extensive parallel tight junctions which are not oriented with respect to the myoid layer, and yet they are inpenetrable by lanthanum. The mechanism(s) for the control of Sertoli cell junction development and orientation has not been established, although such factors as the presence or absence of germ cells, and/or hormones, especially FSH have been implicated.

The prospect of technical applications has induced a lot of interest in the atomic structure of the GaAs on Si(100) interface and the defects in its vicinity which are often studied by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The interface structure is determined by the 4.1% lattice constant mismatch between GaAs and Si, the large difference between the thermal expansion coefficients and the polar/nonpolar nature of the GaAs on Si interface. The lattice constant mismatch is compensated by misfit dislocations which are characterized by a/2<110> Burgers vectors b which are oriented parallel or inclined on {111} planes with respect to the interface. Stacking faults are also frequently observed. They are terminated by partial dislocations with b = a/6<112> on {111} planes. In this report, the atomic structure of stair rod misfit dislocations is analysed which are located at the intersection line of two stacking faults at the interface.A very thin, discontinous film of GaAs has been grown by MBE on a Si(100) substrate. Fig.1.a. shows an interface section of a 27 nm wide GaAs island along [110] containing a stair rod dislocation. The image has been taken with a JEOL 2000EX with a spherical aberration constant Cs = 1 mm, a spread of focus Δz = 10 nm and an angle of beam convergence ϑ of 2 mrad.

Various inclusion bodies occur in vertebrate retinal photoreceptor cells. Most of them are membrane bound and associated with phagocytosis or they are age related residual bodies. We found an additional inclusion body in foveal cone cells of the baboon (Papio anubis) retina.The eyes of a 15 year old baboon were fixed by immersion in cacodylate buffered glutaraldehyde (2%)/formaldehyde (2%) as described in detail elsewhere . Pieces of retina from various locations, including the fovea, were embedded in epoxy resin such that radial or tangential sections could be cut.Spindle shaped inclusion bodies were found in the cytoplasm of only foveal cones. They were abundant in the inner segments, close to the external limiting membrane (Fig. 1). But they also occurred in the outer fibers, the perikarya, and the inner fibers (Henle’s fibers) of the cone cells. The bodies were between 0.5 and 2 μm long. Their central diameter was 0.2 to 0. 3 μm. They always were oriented parallel to the long axis of the cone cells. In longitudinal sections (Figs. 2,3) they seemed to have a fibrous skeleton that, in cross sections, turned out to consist of plate-like (Fig.4) and tubular profiles (Fig. 5).
