The argon and methane gas mixtures co-injection tests were carried out with low carbon steel melts of 80 kg in a multi-function alternating current ladle furnace (AC-LF) equipped with a hollow graphite electrode. It is shown that, the heating rates of the heats with Ar-CH4injection are higher than that of the normal solid graphite electrode heat. The minimal average heating rate of the heat with Ar-CH4co-injection is 1.6 times than that of the normal solid graphite electrode heat, and the maximum is 6.6 times. When argon or Ar-CH4is injected into LF, the voltage is lower and the electric current amplitude are more stable than those of the normal solid graphite electrode heat, and it’s the most stable for the heat refining with φ(Ar)/φ(CH4)=85/15 injection.
