In this study, nano-scale fillers are added to epoxy matrix-based carbon fibers-reinforced composites (CFRPs) to improve the mechanical properties of multi-scale composites. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) used as nano-scale fillers are treated with atmospheric-pressure plasma to introduce oxygen functional groups on the fillers’ surface to increase the surface free energy and polar component, which relates to the mechanical properties of multi-scale composites. In addition, the effect of dispersibility was analyzed through the fracture surfaces of multi-scale composites containing atmospheric-pressure plasma-treated SWCNTs (P-SWCNTs) under high load conditions. The fillers content has an optimum weight percent load at 0.5 wt.% and the fracture toughness (KIC) method is used to demonstrate an improvement in mechanical properties. Here, KIC was calculated by three equations based on different models and we analyzed the correlation between mechanical properties and surface treatment. Compared to the composites of untreated SWCNTs, the KIC value is improved by 23.7%, suggesting improved mechanical properties by introducing selective functional groups through surface control technology to improve interfacial interactions within multi-scale composites.

The surface modification of wood powder by atmospheric pressure plasma treatment was investigated. The composites were manufactured using wood powder and polypropylene (wood powder: polypropylene = 55 wt% : 45 wt%). Atmospheric pressure plasma treatment was applied under the condition of 3 KV,17±1 KHz, 2 g/min. Helium was used as the carrier gas and hexamethyl-disiloxane (HMDSO) as the monomer to modify the surface property of the waste wood biocomposites by plasma polymerization. The tensile strengths of untreated waste wood powder (W3) and single species wood powder (S3) were about 18.5 MPa and 21.5 MPa while those of plasma treated waste wood powder (PW3) and plasma treated single species wood powder (PS3) were about 21.2 MPa and 23.4 MPa, respectively. Tensile strengths of W3 and S3 were improved by 14.6% and 8.8%, respectively. From the analyses of mechanical properties and morphology, we conclude that the interfacial bonding of polypropylene and wood powder can be improved by atmospheric pressure plasma treatment.

The specific properties of an atmospheric pressure plasma make it an attractive tool for the surface treatment of various materials. With this in mind, this paper presents the results of experimental investigations of a polycarbonate (PC) material surface modification using this new type of argon microwave (2.45 GHz) plasma source. The uniqueness of the new plasma source lies in the shape of the generated plasma—in contrast to other microwave plasma sources, which usually provide a plasma in the form of a flame or column, the new ones provides a plasma in the shape of a regular plasma sheet. The influence of the absorbed microwave power and the number of scans on the changes of the wettability and morphological and mechanical properties of the plasma-treated PC samples was investigated. The mechanical properties and changes in roughness of the samples were measured by the use of atomic force microscopy (AFM). The wettability of the plasma-modified samples was tested by measuring the water contact angle. In order to confirm the plasma effect, each of the above-mentioned measurements was performed before and after plasma treatment. All experimental tests were performed with an argon of flow rate up to 20 L/min and the absorbed microwave power ranged from 300 to 850 W. The results prove the capability of the new atmospheric pressure plasma type in modifying the morphological and mechanical properties of PC surfaces for industrial applications.

Through this study, two different natural fibres green composites were characterised from the point of view of mechanical properties and durability. These green polymers allow manufacturing with a respectful life cycle due to their biodegradable or recyclable character. Composite materials were prepared in a hot plates press with two biopolymeric matrices, green low density polyethylene (GPE) and polybutylene succinate (PBS). As reinforcement, Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Torch (APPT) treated and untreated unidirectional woven flax were used. Mechanical properties were evaluated by tensile tests and the adhesion between matrices and reinforcement by peeling tests. The durability of each composite was analysed by water absorption measurements, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis and tensile tests, during several aging times, up to 60 days, under high temperature and humidity conditions. The influence of the Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Torch treatment (APPT) was evaluated in all studies. It was found that GPE composites present better durability against aging conditions than PBS materials, due to the tendency of polyester to hydrolyse compared to the good resistance to humidity of polyolefins. The adhesion between matrices and reinforcement improves with APPT treatment. This improvement is more evident by avoiding the absorption of water than in the mechanical properties results, where only a slightly improvement is shown.
