The world’s population is drastically increasing; therefore, an enormous amount of nitrogen and other fertilizers are used to produce enough food for their feeding. Furthermore, since the applied nitrogen amount is not completely absorbed by plants, its big proportion is released to the environment in different ways. The released nitrogen amount damages both humans’ health and the environment. Some technical and agronomical techniques help to minimize the loss of this nitrogen. The fertilizer's loss not only affects farmers' economic condition, but their effects are integrated. Nitrogen fertilizers pollute water, soil, air, as well as our foods. Leaching nitrate can cause eutrophication in sea, lakes, and water bodies. This condition poses a big threat to the lives of fish and other aquatic organisms. It also causes various diseases in humans such as blue baby syndrome, carcinoma, and others. For instance, Nitrate-N (NO3-N) leads to the blue baby syndrome, carcinoma, and other diseases in humans. NO3-N leaching stimulates the growth of blue-green algae and creates hypoxic zones in the water. Moreover, cyanobacteria produce toxins that affect the liver`, kidney, brain, skin, and other parts of the human body, as well as cause complicated diseases. Ammonia and nitrogen oxides contribute to acid rains and have adverse effects on ecosystems. Nitrous oxides (N₂O) deplete the ozone layer, a layer that prevents harmful rays from reaching the earth. N₂O contributes extremely to global warming due to its potentiality. Although Nitrogen fertilizers have contributed to produce high yields in the world, their excessive application has created different problems in our environment. To reduce nitrogen leaching, some agronomical, technical, and other practices are required to be used in the large and small farming system.

Introduction:Psychiatric symptoms are very prevalent in FTD, in particular in its behavioural variant. Among these, hypochondrial symptoms can be found, usually along the course of the disease.Clinical case:A 70-year-old previously healthy woman was seen for progressive behavioural disturbances. Nine years before she started complaining of having almost all possible diseases. Every time that she saw a documentary or any news describing a disease, she said she had all its symptoms, so she must have the disease. The family started to find this strange, as every time she sake medical help, everything was fine. Even more strange was when she feared having completely inadequate diseases, like the “blue baby syndrome”. Several months after, she started having incomprehensible fears, refused to be left alone, locked all dors and windows and did not want to go outside because she was afraid that someone would harm her. Over the next years the full-blown FTD picture developed, with reduction of speech output, verbal and sexual disinhibition, impulsivity, hyperphagia and aggressivity, with total lack of insight. Upon examination she was coprolalic, inadequate, perseverant and had frontal release signs. MRI showed bilateral frontotemporal atrophy and PET revealed frontotemporal hypometabolism.Conclusion:Although hypochondrial symptoms are one of the affective classical symptoms in FTD, they are unusual in first stages of disease, and has not been, to our knowledge, reported as a presenting sign. These findings highlight the need to bear in mind this diagnosis in all patients presenting with novel psychiatric symptoms in late life.

The Upper Pangani River and its watershed are increasingly being impacted by environmental problems which includenon point source pollutants that are threatening the watershed resources. Increased human activities due to populationincrease, and hence agricultural activities, livestock development, the use of agrochemicals and other land developmentin the basin, have tended to lead to a serious pollution of the river water which also affects not only the aquatic life butalso human health.With intensive and extensive modern agriculture in which artificial fertilizers are in frequent use, there is a highprobability to find chemicals easily flowing into water, thus polluting it. The introduction of agricultural chemicals inrivers may be detrimental. Nitrogen and Phosphorus which are present in agricultural chemicals are essential plantnutrients, which when introduced into surface waters may cause some health problems such as blue-baby syndrome andstomach cancer.To carry out this study we divided the Upper Pangani River basin into two sub-basins; Kikuletwa and Ruvu. The studyconcentrated on Ruvu sub-basin to study and model the pollution transported to the rivers. QUAL2E model was chosenand applied to assess the pollution status of the river network. The model simulated stream flow, dissolved oxygen,phosphorus and nitrogen compounds. From model results, the amount of non-point source load reaching Ruvu river wasfound to be 7857.81tons/yr for nitrogen and 12057.39 tons/yr for phosphorus. The results of the QUAL2E model suggestthat there is pollution at upstream rivers as a result of application of fertilizers to the irrigation schemes which are themain sources of non point source pollution.

Τα νιτρικά ιόντα (ΝΟ₃⁻) ανιχνεύονται σε όλα τα περιβαλλοντικά συστήματα. Αυξημένες συγκεντρώσεις ΝΟ₃⁻ ιόντων ενδέχεται να προκαλέσουν σοβαρά προβλήματα υγείας (μέσω της παραγωγής των καρκινογενών νιτροζαμίνων), όπως μεθαιμοσφαιριναιμία (blue baby syndrome) στα βρέφη και σε ορισμένες περιπτώσεις καρκίνο του στομάχου και του εντέρου καθώς και πρόκληση υπερθυρεοειδισμού. Για το λόγο αυτό η Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση έχει θεσπίσει ανώτατα επιτρεπτά όρια για την προστασία της ανθρώπινης υγείας. Στην παρούσα διατριβή πραγματοποιήθηκε συστηματικός έλεγχος της κατανομής των ΝΟ₃⁻ ιόντων στο περιβάλλον (νερό, φυλλώδη λαχανικά, έδαφος) του νομού Αιτωλοακαρνανίας και μελετήθηκαν οι παράγοντες που μειώνουν τη συσσώρευση ΝΟ₃⁻ ιόντων στα φυλλώδη λαχανικά. - Σε όλα τα δείγματα, οι συγκεντρώσεις ΝΟ₃⁻ ιόντων που ανιχνεύθηκαν ήταν χαμηλές και μέσα στα όρια που έχει θεσπίσει η Ε.Ε. Το γεγονός αυτό αποδίδεται κυρίως στην έντονη και μεγάλης διάρκειας ηλιοφάνεια που παρατηρείται στην περιοχή, καθώς και στο μεγάλο υδάτινο δυναμικό του νομού Αιτωλοακαρνανίας (βροχοπτώσεις, υδάτινοι ταμιευτήρες). Επιπλέον, οι παράγοντες που βρέθηκε ότι μειώνουν τη συσσώρευση στα φυλλώδη λαχανικά ήταν το είδος λιπάσματος και ο τρόπος καλλιέργειας (βιολογική καλλιέργεια) και η ένταση της ηλιακής ακτινοβολίας. - Μελετήθηκε η επίδραση των ΝΟ₃⁻ και άλλων ιόντων ηλεκτρολύτη (Mg²⁺ και SO₄²⁻), στη δέσμευση καδμίου σε συστατικά του εδάφους γ-Αl₂O₃, SiO₂. Τα αποτελέσματα έδειξαν ότι η δέσμευση του Cd²⁺ στη γ-Αl₂O₃ ρυθμίζεται από τα ιόντα ηλεκτρολύτη μέσω ενός πολύπλοκου μηχανισμού. α) Σε υψηλές συγκεντρώσεις ηλεκτρολύτη, η πρόσληψη του Cd²⁺ από τη γ-Αl₂O₃ παρεμποδίζεται. Η θεωρητική ανάλυση μέσω των Μοντέλων Επιφανειακής Δέσμευσης έδειξε ότι το φαινόμενο αυτό αποδίδεται μερικώς στα φαινόμενα υψηλής ιοντικής ισχύος, ενώ η μεγαλύτερη παρεμπόδιση οφείλεται στον άμεσο ανταγωνισμό μεταξύ των ιόντων Mg²⁺ και Cd²⁺ για τις επιφανειακές θέσεις ≡SO⁻ της γ-Αl₂O₃. β) Σε χαμηλές συγκεντρώσεις ηλεκτρολύτη, η πρόσληψη του Cd²⁺ από τη γ-Αl₂O₃ ενισχύεται εξαιτίας της συνεργιστικής συμπροσρόφησης του Cd²⁺ και των ιόντων ηλεκτρολύτη, κυρίως για τα SO₄²⁻ και σε μικρότερο βαθμό για τα ΝΟ₃⁻ ιόντα. Η θεωρητική ανάλυση έδειξε ότι η συμπροσρόφηση αυτή αποδίδεται στο σχηματισμό των τριαδικών επιφανειακών χημικών ειδών (=SOH₂SO₄Cd) και (=SOH₂NO₃Cd), τα οποία ενισχύουν την πρόσληψη του Cd²⁺ σε τιμές pH μικρότερες από το σημείο μηδενικού φορτίου της γ-Αl₂O₃. - Τα παραπάνω αποτελέσματα παρατηρήθηκαν και στο δυαδικό οξείδιο [SiO₂, 20% Αl₂O₃] που χρησιμοποιείται ευρέως ως υπόστρωμα καλλιέργειας δηλαδή περλίτης (80% SiO₂, 20% Αl₂O₃). Προσδιορίστηκε το σημείο του μηδενικού του φορτίου (pHpzc) ενώ διαπιστώθηκε πως ο μη-διογκωμένος περλίτης παρουσιάζει μεγαλύτερη προσροφητική ικανότητα από το διογκωμένο-περλίτη. Το φαινόμενο αυτό αποδίδεται στην απώλεια λειτουργικών θέσεων στην επιφάνεια του περλίτη, εξαιτίας της θερμικής επεξεργασίας που έχει υποστεί (υαλοποίηση).
