Lifetimes of three of the low-lying excited states in 29P, populated in the 28Si(p,γ) reaction, have been determined using the Doppler shift attenuation method. The mean lifetimes of states at 4.085, 1.956, and 1.385 MeV were found to be 15 ± 4, 370 ± 80, and 200 ± 60 fs.Angular distribution measurements have also been performed on gamma rays resulting from the decay of the 4.085 MeV resonance level. The decay was found to go via states at 3.107 MeV (3%), 1.956 MeV (54%), and 1.385 MeV (43%). The spin of the resonance level was uniquely assigned as 7/2 and the multipole mixing ratios of the 2.129 and 1.385 MeV transitions as + 0.17 ± 0.05 and + 0.303 ± 0.050 respectively. The consequent transition rates indicate that the parity of the resonance level is positive.

Lifetimes of excited states in 128 Ce were measured using the recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) and the Doppler-shift attenuation (DSAM) methods. The experiments were performed at the Wright Nuclear Structure Laboratory of Yale University. Excited states of 128 Ce were populated in the 100 Mo (32 Si ,4 n ) reaction at 120 MeV and the nuclear γ decay was measured with an array of eight Clover detectors positioned at forward and backward angles. The deduced yrast transition strengths together with the energies of the levels within the ground-state (gs) band of 128 Ce are in agreement with the predicted values for the X (5) critical point symmetry. Thus, we suggest 128 Ce as a benchmark X (5) nucleus in the mass A ≈ 130 region.

Excited states in mirror nuclei 31S and 31P were populated in the 1n and 1p exit channels, respectively, of the reaction 20Ne + 12C. The beam of 20Ne, with an energy of 33 MeV, was delivered for the first time by the Piave-Alpi accelerator of the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. Angular correlations of coincident pairs and Doppler-shift attenuation lifetime measurements in 31S and 31P were performed using the multidetector array GASP in conjunction with the EUCLIDES charged particle detector. A comparison of the determined B(E1) strengths of the analog mirror 7/2- → 5/2+ transitions indicates the presence of a violation of isospin symmetry.

Excited states in 59Cu and 63Cu have been studied with radiative proton capture. Doppler shift attenuation factors have been measured for γ-rays depopulating these states, with ion recoil speeds of approximately 0.1% of the speed of light. Measurements of resonance strengths reported here, together with existing data from other techniques, have been used to deduce lifetimes for the same states. For five cases where the DSA factors and the lifetimes have been determined independently, consistency with DSAM theory is optimized when the standard energy loss value is multiplied by a factor of 0.94 ± 0.11.

An improved analysis of Doppler-shifted γ spectra is outlined. This analysis is exact within the Lindhard theory of slowing down of heavy ions in solids.With an approximate cross section applicable at low energies, the equations become independent of the energy, except as a scaling parameter, and depend only on the projectile–target mass ratio. A set of universal curves of the mean fractional shift F(τ) is calculated in this approximation for several values of the mass ratio.Une analyse améliorée de spectres γ déplacés par effet Doppler est esquissée. Cette analyse est conforme à la théorie de Lindhard sur le ralentissement des ions lourds dans les solides.

An implanted target (14N on Ta) is prepared and characterized via surface and bulk characterization processes. The depth profile of the implanted ions is obtained experimentally by populating a narrow resonance state of 15O through 14N(ρ,γ) reaction induced with a laboratory proton energy of 278 keV. The experimental profile is then compared with devoted simulations to under- stand the locations of the implantated ions in the lattice structure. Later, the lifetimes of a few excited states of 15O, relevant for applications in astrophys- ical scenario, have been determined using Doppler Shift Attenuation Method(DSAM).

The excited states of 73 As have been investigated via the 73 Ge ( p , n γ)73 As reaction with proton beam energies from 2.5–4.3 MeV. The lifetimes of the levels at 769.6, 860.5, 1177.8, 1188.7, 1274.9, 1344.1, 1557.1 and 1975.2 keV excitation energies have been measured for the first time using the Doppler shift attenuation method. The angular distributions have been used to assign the spins and the multipole mixing ratios using statistical theory for compound nuclear reactions. The ambiguity in the spin values for the various levels has been removed. The multipole mixing ratios for eight γ-transitions have been newly measured.
