Unified Description

Theoretical relation derived in the last study for calculation of the mass transfer coefficient in the region of not fully developed concentration profile at high Schmidt numbers has been verified experimentally. This experimental study has been devoted to measurements of the rate of benzoic acid dissolution into aqueous solutions of glycerol from the internal surface of the pipe of circular cross section in the range 933 ⪬ Sc ⪬ 225 000 and 5 000 ⪬ Re ⪬ 50 000. It has been possible to explain on basis of the theoretical model, the differences between the data of various authors and to obtain a unified description of the phenomena.

Abstract Starting from type IIB string theory on an ADE singularity, the (2, 0) little string arises when one takes the string coupling gs to 0. In this setup, we give a unified description of the codimension-two defects of the little string, labeled by a simple Lie algebra $$ \mathfrak{g} $$ g . Geometrically, these are D5 branes wrapping 2-cycles of the singularity, subject to a certain folding operation when the algebra is non simply-laced. Equivalently, the defects are specified by a certain set of weights of $$ {}^L\mathfrak{g} $$ L g , the Langlands dual of $$ \mathfrak{g} $$ g . As a first application, we show that the instanton partition function of the $$ \mathfrak{g} $$ g -type quiver gauge theory on the defect is equal to a 3-point conformal block of the $$ \mathfrak{g} $$ g -type deformed Toda theory in the Coulomb gas formalism. As a second application, we argue that in the (2, 0) CFT limit, the Coulomb branch of the defects flows to a nilpotent orbit of $$ \mathfrak{g} $$ g .

A method is presented in the scheme of the boson approximation such that the antisymmetry between the quasi-particles is introduced naturally. Based on the transcription of the quasi-particle into the ideal space, the method enables one to give a unified description of the anharmonic corrections in the even–even and odd spherical nuclei.

At sufficiently high operating speeds in lightly loaded journal bearings the basic laminar flow will be unstable. The instability leads to a new steady secondary motion of ring vortices around the cylinders with a regular periodicity in the axial direction and a strength that depends on the azimuthial position (Taylor vortices). Very recently published work on the basic flow and the stability of the basic flow between eccentric circular cylinders with the inner cylinder rotating is summarized so as to provide a unified description. A procedure for calculating the Taylor-vortex flow is developed, a comparison with observed properties of the flow field is made, and formulas for the load and torque are given.

AbstractKinetic collisionless expansion of a spherical cluster composed of light and heavy cold ions and hot electrons is studied for arbitrary electron temperature. A wide set of regimes of plasma expansion, from nearly quasi-neutral to Coulomb explosion, is described from a unified description. The time evolution of the velocity, density, and energy spectra for accelerated ions is studied. The study demonstrates that an optimum light ion concentration from few percent to few tens percent, depending on the electron temperature, leads to a quasi-monoenergetic spectra with numbers as high as 70–80% of the total number of light ions.
