The influence of V additions on isothermally formed bainite in medium carbon steels containing retained austenite has been investigated using in-situ high energy X-ray diffraction (HEXRD) and ex-situ electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) techniques in the transmission electron microscope (TEM). No significant impact of V in solid solution on the bainite transformation rate, final phase fractions or on the width of bainite laths was seen for transformations in the range 375–430 °C. No strong influence on the dislocation density could be detected, although quantitative analysis was impeded by ferrite tetragonality. A reduction in the carbon content of retained austenite Cγ that is not believed to be due to competition with VC or cementite precipitation was observed. No influence of V on the carbon supersaturation in bainitic ferrite Cb could be directly measured, although carbon mass balance calculations suggest Cb slightly increases. A beneficial refinement of blocky MA and a corresponding size effect induced enhancement in austenite stability were found at the lowest transformation temperature. Overall, V additions result in a slight increase in strength levels.

Recently it has been discovered by electron microscopy that even in medium carbon steels (Mf≳200°C) small quantities of interlath retained austenite (γ) is present in as-quenched structures. It is speculated that this small quantity of retained γ can have a profound influence on the mechanical properties of steel. This austenite is severely deformed and in most cases the amount is so small that detection by x-ray analysis becomes impossible. However, sophisticated electron microscopic techniques involving careful selected area diffraction, bright field and dark field imaging can unequivocally establish the presence of such small quantities of austentite. Extremely useful morphological and microstructural information on the austenite can also be obtained from the electron metallography.

Nb-free and Nb-bearing medium carbon steels treated by quenching-partitioning-tempering process were investigated. The microstructural observations and hardness were analyzed by optical microscope, transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffraction and hardness test. Results show that when quenched at 210oC and partitioned at 450oC ultra fine-grained microstructures of martensite, retained austenite and carbides are obtained. The Nb-bearing steel has finer martensite lath, more volume fraction of retained austenite and higher hardness compared with that of Nb-free steel. The addition of Nb is responsible for not only the precipitation strengthening but also the more volume fraction of retained austenite during quenching-partitioning-tempering process.

The austenite/pearlite growth interface in a model alloy steel (Fe-1 lMn-0.8C nominal wt%) is being investigated. In this particular alloy pearlite nodules can be grown isothermally in austenite that remains stable at room temperature, thus facilitating examination of the transformation interfaces. This study presents preliminary results of thin foil TEM of the austenite/pearlite interface, as part of a programme of aimed at studying alloy carbide precipitation reactions at this interface which can result in significant strengthening of microalloyed low- and medium- carbon steels L Similar studies of interface structure, made on a partially decomposed high- Mn austenitic alloy, have been reported recently.The experimental alloys were made as 50 g argon arc melts using high purity materials and homogenised. Samples were hot- rolled, swaged and machined to 3mm diameter rod, solution treated at 1300 °C for 1 hr and WQ. Specimens were then solutionised between 1250 °C and 1000 °C and isothermally transformed between 610 °C and 550 °C for 10-18 hr and WQ.

The paper presents an analysis of the mechanical behavior of friction samples of welded joints from steels 30G2 (36 Mn 5) and 40 KhN (40Ni Cr 6), made by rotary friction welding (RFW). The influence of various temperature conditions of postweld tempering on the mechanical properties and deformation behavior during uniaxial tensile testing is analyzed. Vulnerabilities where crack nucleation and propagation occurred in specimens with a welded joint were identified. It was found that with this combination of steels, postweld tempering of the welded joint contributes to a decrease in the integral strength characteristics under conditions of static tension along with a significant decrease in the relative longitudinal deformation of the tested samples.
