It is the objective of this study to investigate the effect of ECAP processing and heat treatment on the mechanical properties of the UFG 7075 alloy. Also the effect of post ECAP heat treatment is investigated. The alloy is processed by ECAP after annealing as well as solution treatment to produce an UFG structure. Furthermore mechanical properties and their variations during annealing and aging are investigated. The hardness of the pre-ECAP annealed and the pre-ECAP solutionised 7075 aluminum alloy has increased significantly compared with that of the CG sample. Also hardness of ECAPed specimen has not experienced significant changes in post-ECAP heat treatment and indicated that the alloy had approximately good thermal stability.

When hot forging 7075 aluminum alloy, as a military material durable enough for most of its applications, it needs to be heat-treated to ensure the target material property achieves the application requirements. However, the material properties change because of heat throughout usage. In this study, a new approach was devised to heat treat the alloy to prevent material property changes. The study further clarified the effect of rapid heat treatment on the high-temperature resistance of a hot forging 7075 aluminum alloy. Infrared (IR) heat treatment was used as a rapid heating technique to effectively replace the conventional resistance heat (RH) treatment method. Our experimental result showed that IR heat treatment resulted in better age hardening at the initial aging stage, where its tensile strength and elongation appeared like that of a resistance heat treatment. More so, based on hardness and tensile test results, the IR-heated treatment process inhibited the phase transformation of precipitations at a higher temperature, improving high-temperature softening resistance and enhancing the thermal stability of the hot forging 7075 aluminum alloy.

Research Results

The effect of RRA treatment with using low retrogression temperatures between 170°C to 190°C on the strength and electrical conductivity (as an indicator of corrosion resistance) of 7B04 aluminum alloy thick plates was investigated. The research results showed that the low-temperature RRA heat treatment provides a means for improving electrical conductivity of the aluminum alloy 7B04 pre-stretched thick plates without sacrificing the mechanical strength. The RRA temper with retrogression at 180°C for 60 min improved electrical conductivity remarkably (reached 21.0MS/m), with only a 3% reduction in strength below T6 temper. Furthermore, TEM observations showed that the microstructure of RRA treated alloy was a very fine distribution of η′ MgZn2 precipitates in the aluminum matrix, similar to T6 condition and η MgZn2 precipitates on grain boundaries distributed similarly to T73 temper.

In this research a surface hardening process by Ni coating and subsequent diffusion heat treatments was studied at 7075 Aluminum alloy. Nickel coatings with different thickness were obtained by change the coating time and current density. Heat treatments at 450 °C, 500 °C, and 550 °C for times (6, 12, 24) hours were performed in order to obtain surface hardening required of the aluminum alloy by diffusion of nickel into the substrate. The effect of temperature and diffusion time on surface hardness of Al 7075 alloy was studied. Surface hardness about 800 [HV] were achieved after heat treatment at 500 °C for 24 hour by diffusion of Ni in the substrate and cause of formation of Al3Ni2intermetallic phase, as x-ray diffraction tests of samples showed. While is about 670 [HV] after heat treatment at 550 °C for 24 hour because of diffusion of aluminum toward the surface of sample, as x-ray diffraction tests of samples showed.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the effects of second phase precipitate size on microstructure, hardness, density, corrosion and electrical conductivity of 7075 aluminum alloy fabricated by the powder metallurgy method and aged at 120°C for various aging periods. Design/methodology/approach For the aging process (T6), these alloys were solution-treated at 485°C for 2 h, quenched, aged at 120°C for four various periods and finally air cooled. After the aging process, these alloys were examined with scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, density and hardness measurements. The corrosion tests were carried out using the potentiodynamic polarization technique; electrical conductivity values were measured as IACS%. Findings Results showed that the precipitate size increased with increasing aging period and the maximum precipitate size was achieved for the sample aged for 28 h. The maximum hardness was attained for the sample aged for 24 h, while the same specimen obtained the lowest electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance. Originality/value In this research, second phase precipitates of heat treatment processing affected the electrical conductivity and corrosion behavior of the 7075 aluminum alloy. Also it is understood that the heat treatment period is an effective parameter on these properties.

Retrogression and Re-Aging (RRA) Heat Treatment improves the tensile of aluminum alloys. In this research, to study the effect of Retrogression temperature and Retrogression time on the hardness, tensile strength and microstructure of 7075 aluminum alloy, have been applied. Retrogression treatments at different temperatures 180°C, 240°C and 370°C for 30 min and 90 min. When the retrogression temperature was 180°C for 30 min, the alloy has reached its highest hardness and tensile strength; they were respectively 165 HB and 586 MPa. RRA treatment of aluminum alloy 7075 led to precipitate a smoother, more homogeneous, and denser phase compared to the T6 treatment.
