A set of four tensors corresponding to Eshelby’s tensor in elasticity are obtained for an ellipsoidal inclusion embedded in an infinite piezoelectric medium. These tensors, which describe the elastic, piezoelectric, and dielectric constraint of the matrix, are obtained from W. F. Deeg’s solution to inclusion and inhomogeneity problems in piezoelectric solids. These tensors are then used as the backbone in the development of a micromechanics theory to predict the effective elastic, dielectric, and piezoelectric moduli of particle and fibre reinforced composite materials. The effects of interaction among inhomogeneities at finite concentrations are approximated through the Mori-Tanaka mean field approach. This approach, although widely utilized in the study of uncoupled elastic and dielectric behaviour, has not before been applied to the study of coupled behaviour. To help ensure confidence in the theory, the analytical predictions are proven to be self-consistent, diagonally symmetric, and to exhibit the correct behaviour in the low and high concentration limits. Finally, numerical results are presented to illustrate the effects of the concentration, shape, and material properties of the reinforcement on the effective properties of piezoelectric composites and analytical predictions are shown to result in good agreement with existing experimental data.

Effective elastic and thermal properties for isotropic or transversely isotropic thermoelastic fibrous composite materials are obtained. Fibers are distributed with the same periodicity along the two perpendicular directions to the fiber orientation. The periodic cell of the composite has a square or hexagonal distribution. Perfect contact between the fiber and the matrix is presented. The effective properties are calculated using a semi-analytical method. The semi-analytical method consists of obtaining the differential equations that describe the local problems using the Asymptotic Homogenization Method. Then, these equations are solved using the Finite Element Method. Effective elastic coefficient (C¯), effective thermal expansion coefficient (α¯) and the effective thermal conductivity (κ¯) are obtained. The numerical results are compared with the semi-analytical solution and with results reported by other authors. Additionally, the effective properties for a fiber with an elliptical cross section are calculated. Distributions of the fiber’s cross section with different orientations are also studied. A MATLAB program for computing the effective coefficients is presented.

Abstract Anisotropic composite materials have been extensively utilized in mechanical, automotive, aerospace and other engineering areas due to high strength-to-weight ratio, superb corrosion resistance, and exceptional thermal performance. As the use of composite materials increases, determination of material properties, mechanical analysis and failure of the structure become important for the design of composite structure. In particular, the fatigue failure is important to ensure that structures can survive in harsh environmental conditions. Despite technical advances, fatigue failure and the monitoring and prediction of component life remain major problems. In general, cyclic loadings cause the accumulation of micro-damage in the structure and material properties degrade as the number of loading cycles increases. Repeated subfailure loading cycles cause eventual fatigue failure as the material strength and stiffness fall below the applied stress level. Hence, the stiffness degradation measurement can be a good indication for damage evaluation. The elastic characterization of composite material using mechanical testing, however, is complex, destructive, and not all the elastic constants can be determined. In this work, an in-situ method to non-destructively determine the elastic constants will be studied based on the time of flight measurement of ultrasonic waves. This method will be validated on an isotropic metal sheet and a transversely isotropic composite plate.
