The article considers perspectives and institutions for innovative nuclear energy subsector – a small and medium-sized nuclear power plants (SNP). The features of the technologies, prospective sites for their introduction, topics for priority research work, as well as mechanisms for the creation of a new sub-sector of nuclear energy are briefly discussed. The advantages and opportunities of such approach to the energy supply of autonomous and isolated consumers located primarily in remote areas and in the Arctic are indicated. Special attention is paid to the problems of technological and operational safety, economic efficiency, and personnel training. The methodological framework provides a brief integrated description of the possibilities provided by dual-use technologies in solving national economic issues; a list of priority research areas to clarify assessments of the financial and economic efficiency of the SNP subsystem within the Russian nuclear energy industry; as well as proposals for personnel training to ensure a trouble-free and efficient Program implementation process.

Prospects of using tubes produced by Centravis Production Ukraine JSC of ferritic-austenitic (duplex) steels of a new generation according to the developed innovative technology in the heat exchanging equipment of nuclear power plants (NPP) were scientifically substantiated based on analysis of scientific and technical literature and the results obtained in comprehensive studies. Comparative corrosion studies of the tubes made of austenitic Cr-Ni and Cr-Ni-Mo steels and 02Cr22Ni5NМo3 (UNS S 31803) duplex steel have shown a substantially improved resistance of the latter to intercrystalline, pit and crevice corrosion, corrosion cracking and erosion. Presence of special low-energy γ-γ, α-α grain boundaries and α-γ interphase boundaries characterized by an increased corrosion resistance and a contribution to the growth of steel durability as a whole was found for the first time in the structure of ferritic-austenitic steels.

This article provides an analysis of issues in relation to the environmental safety of nuclear power plants, based on the international and Russian experience. The author demonstrates that Russian nuclear plants have a high level of environmental safety. Brief characteristics of all safety barriers have been given. And attention has been paid to the stress tests of the operating nuclear powers plants. Statistic data over recent decades confirm the high level of safety. Special attention is given to nuclear power plants having new-generation 3+ VVER reactors with the capacity of 1,200 MW.

The paper presents the results of a feasibility study focused on two methods designed to treat evaporator bottoms generated from the evaporation of liquid radioactive waste (LRW) at nuclear power plants (NPP), namely, deep evaporation (DE) and ion-selective decontamination (ISD). ISD method proved to be much more efficient and costeffective compared to the DE one due to a drastic reduction of the conditioned radioactive waste volume intended for disposal. The paper also considers possible opportunities for upgrading particular ISD stages. It provides recommendations on how to upgrade LRW treatment technologies at NPP of a new generation, including separated collection of basic LRW types and development of in situ RW processing and conditioning flowsheets.
