This study was carried out to determine the effect of growing conditions underdifferent altitudes on seed production in different potato crosses in Tokat Provinceof Turkey in 2015. Plants were grown and crosses were made in open field or nethouse in Tokat location (altitude 600 m asl.), open field or net house in Artovalocation (altitude 1200 m asl.), or controlled polycarbonate greenhouse. Fifteendifferent crosses were made between 12 parent cultivars. Production of hybridpotato seed was considered “crossing success”. Results showed that parentcultivars and cross combinations affected crossing success and no seeds wereproduced from some combinations while some combinations produced abundantseeds. The highest number of seeds were produced in controlled polycarbonategreenhouse, whereas very low amount of seeds were produced under low altitude(600 m asl.) open field conditions. Polycarbonate greenhouse produced 47.3% ofall seeds, while low altitude net house produced 19.8%, high altitude open fieldproduced 15.8%, high altitude net house produced 13.6% and low altitude openfield produced 3.5%. It was concluded that for a high crossing success, potatocrossing should be made by controlled polycarbonate greenhouse conditions and 23C0 day / 17 C0 night temperatures produced more hybrid seeds.

Satellite Image Time Series (SITS) have been used to build models for predicting Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) yields at regional scales, but evidence of extension of such models to local field scale for practical use in precision agriculture is lacking. In this study, multispectral data from the Sentinel-2 satellite were used to interpolate continuous spectral signatures of potato canopies and generate vegetation indices and the red edge inflection point (REIP) to relate to marketable yield and stem density. The SITS data were collected from 94 sampling locations across five potato fields in England, United Kingdom. The sampling locations were georeferenced and the number of stems per square meter, as well as marketable yield, were determined at harvest. The first principal components of the temporal variation of each SITS wavelength were extracted and used to generate 54 vegetation indices to relate to the response variables. Marketable yield was negatively related to the overall seasonal reflectance (first principal component) at 559 nm with a beta coefficient of −0.53 (±0.18 at p = 0.05). Seasonal reflectance at 703 nm had a positive significant relationship with Marketable yield. Marketable yield was modeled with a normalized root mean square error (nRMSE) of 0.16 and R2 of 0.65. On the other hand, Stem density was significantly related to the Specific Leaf Area Vegetation Index (β = 1.66 ± 1.59) but the REIP’s farthest position during the season was reached later in dense canopies (β = 1.18 ± 0.79) with a higher reflectance (β = 3.43 ± 1.9). This suggested that denser canopies took longer to reach their maximum chlorophyll intensity and the intensity was lower than in sparse canopies. Potato stem density was modeled with an nRMSE of 0.24 and R2 of 0.51. These results reinforce the importance of SITS analysis as opposed to the use of single-instance intrinsic indices.

The suitability of three production methods for potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) from true seed (TPS)were studied in field conditions at the University of Helsinki, Department of Horticulture. The production methods were direct field sowing, planting 4-week old seedlings raised in peat pots and planting seedlings and covering them with floating polypropylene mulch. The cultivars were Explorer and Pan American Seed Company varieties numbers 2928 and 4000. Also tested were the cultivars 2909, 2928, 3018, 4000, 4016, 4048 and 4147. Floating mulch promoted vegetative growth, but also promoted the propagation and spreading of Phytophtora infestans spores. The best yield was obtained with pot-raised seedlings without mulching (3.38 kg/m2), the second best yield with mulching (2.69 kg/m2) and the lowest yield with field-sowing (2.33 kg/m2). More small tubers were obtained under floating mulch than without mulching. Of the seven Pan American Seed Company cultivars tested, 4047 and 4016 gave the best yield, 4.1 and 4.0 kg/m2. In sensory tests none of the three cultivars (3018, 4047 and Explorer) proved to be better than or equal to the taste of the common vegetatively propagated Finnish potato variety called Pito.

Objetivo: Establecer una línea base como fundamento para la intervención e inducción de innovaciones a través de escuelas de campo y planes de negocios. Diseño/metodología/aproximación: El estudio se desarrolló en San José del Carmen, San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, México. Se elaboró una encuesta como instrumento para recabar en campo información de familias de la localidad con la finalidad de conocer su situación actual. La localidad de trabajo se eligió utilizando como criterio las poblaciones que se encuentran dentro de Cruzada Nacional contra el hambre y en la clasificación de la pobreza extrema Resultados: La localidad de San José del Carmen es considerada como de alta marginación, la población es bilingüe, su principal lengua es el Tzotzil, el nivel de estudios promedio es hasta el tercer año de primaria, las principales actividades productivas son la siembra de maíz (Zea mays L.), frijol (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), papa (Solanum tuberosum L.) y haba (Vicia faba L.) que son utilizadas principalmente para autoconsumo.  No cuentan con agua potable ya que su sistema es a través de la recaudación de agua de lluvia o a través de un jagüey. Sus principales actividades económicas son la albañilería por parte de los hombres, y venta de productos, tales como el pozol (bebida energética a base de maíz y cacao (Theobroma cacao L.), tostadas y algunos vegetales por parte de las mujeres. Las tostadas son producidas en forma artesanal con un proceso de doble nixtamalización y vendida en bolsas de 20 tostadas cada una, a un costo de MX$10.00 en los mercados de San Cristóbal de las Casas, una a dos veces por semana alrededor de 40 bolsas por día de venta. Limitaciones del estudio/implicaciones: La afiliación zapatista de alguno de los pobladores y el hecho de que algunos habitantes no hablen español, fueron factores que limitaron desarrollar al 100% el estudio; sin embargo, se considera que se tienen los elementos necesarios para establecer la línea base de la situación de San José del Carmen. Conclusiones: El diagnóstico servirá como una herramienta para establecer una intervención a través de innovaciones y planes de negocios en la comunidad de estudio. Los pobladores cuentan con herramientas necesarias para obtener nuevos conocimientos que ayuden a un desarrollo de su producción. El idioma no deberá de ser una limitante para ello.
