Correlation between surface crystallization behavior of BaO-TiO2-GeO2 (BTG) glass and the thermal stability parameter measured by Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) was examined. We have proposed normalized thermal stability ΔTnorm of the BTG glass using crystallization temperature (Tx), glass transition temperature (Tg), and melting temperature (Tm). It was found that surface crystallization occurred in the BTG glass possessing ΔTnorm (= (Tx-Tg)/Tm) value larger than 0.08. Compared ΔTnorm value of bulk state with that of powdered state, it has been revealed that Ba2TiGe2O8 was precipitated independently of thermal stabilities whereas BaTiGe3O9 or BaGe4O9 was precipitated in precursor glasses possessing high surface stability.

This paper deals with the crystallization of glass 30Li2O?15Nb2O5?50SiO2?5TiO2 (mol%). The crystallization behavior was studied under isothermal and non-isothermal conditions. XRD and SEM methods were employed for determination of phase composition and microstructure of crystallized glass. It was detected that this glass crystallizes by the surface crystallization mechanism. SEM micrographs of the crystallized samples revealed that the crystals grow in the form of dendrites. The glass-ceramics with complex phase composition was obtained. Three crystalline phases were detected where LiNbO3 has grown as primary phase and a secondary ones Li2Si2O5 and SiO2 appeared. The calculated average crystallite sizes are: 27 nm for LiNbO3 , 115 nm for Li2Si2O5 and 45 nm for SiO2 . From the experimental data an activation energy of crystals growth, calculated using the Kissinger relation, is Ea = 275 ?10 KJ / mol.

The use of Si3N4, alloys for high temperature, high stress structural applications has prompted numerous studies of the oxynitride glasses which exist as intergranular phases in their microstructures. Oxynitride glasses have been investigated recently in their bulk form in order to understand their crystallization behavior for subsequent Si3N4 applications and to investigate their worth as glass-ceramic precursors. This research investigates the crystallization sequence of a glass having a normalized composition of Y26Si30Al11 ON11 and lying in the A1N-Y2O3-SiO2 section of the Y-Si-Al-O-N system. Such glasses exist as intergranular phases in the technologically important Y2O3/Al2O3-fluxed Si3N4 alloys.
