Abstract Among the renewable energy technologies, offshore wind energy is expected to provide a significant contribution for the achievement of the European Renewable Energy (RE) targets for the next future. In this framework, the increase of generated power combined with the alleviation of vibratory loads achieved by application of suitable advanced control systems can lead to a beneficial LCOE (Levelized Cost Of Energy) reduction. This paper defines a control strategy for increasing floating offshore wind turbine lifetime through the reduction of vibratory blade and hub loads. To this purpose a Proportional-Integral (PI) controller based on measured blade-root bending moment feedback provides the blade cyclic pitch to be actuated. The proportional and integral gain matrices are determined by an optimization procedure whose objective is the alleviation of the vibratory loads due to a wind distributed linearly on the rotor disc. This control synthesis process relies on a linear, state-space, reduced-order model of the floating offshore wind turbine derived from aero-hydroelastic simulations provided by the open-source tool OpenFAST. In addition to the validation of the proposed controller, the numerical investigation based on OpenFAST predictions examines also the corresponding control effort, influence on platform dynamics and expected blade lifetime extension. The outcomes show that, as a by-product of the alleviation of the vibratory out-of-plane bending moment at the blade root, significant reductions of both cumulative blade lifetime damage and sway and roll platform motion are achieved, as well. The maximum required control power is less than 1% of the generated power.

This paper describes an experimental field study of the rotor aerodynamics of wind turbines. The test wind turbine is a horizontal axis wind turbine, or: HAWT with a diameter of 10m. The pressure distributions on the rotating blade are measured with multi point pressure transducers. Sectional aerodynamic forces are analyzed from pressure distribution. Blade root moments are measured simultaneously by a pair of strain gauges. The inflow wind is measured by a three component sonic anemometer, the local inflow of the blade section are measured by a pair of 7 hole Pitot tubes. The relation between the aerodynamic moments on the blade root from pressure distribution and the mechanical moment from strain gauges is discussed. The aerodynamic moments are estimated from the sectional aerodynamic forces and show oscillation caused by local wind speed and direction change. The mechanical moment shows similar oscillation to the aerodynamic excepting the short period oscillation of the blade first mode frequency. The fluctuation of the sectional aerodynamic force triggers resonant blade oscillations. Where stall is present along the blade section, the blade’s first mode frequency is dominant. Without stall, the rotating frequency is dominant in the blade root moment.

Abstract. A novel wind turbine rotor optimization methodology is presented. Using an assumption of radial independence it is possible to obtain an optimal relationship between the global power (CP) and load coefficient (CT, CFM) through the use of Karush–Kuhn–Tucker (KKT) multipliers, leaving an optimization problem that can be solved at each radial station independently. It allows solving load constraint power and annual energy production (AEP) optimization problems where the optimization variables are only the KKT multipliers (scalars), one for each of the constraints. For the paper, two constraints, namely the thrust and blade root flap moment, are used, leading to two optimization variables. Applying the optimization methodology to maximize power (P) or annual energy production (AEP) for a given thrust and blade root flap moment, but without a cost function, leads to the same overall result with the global optimum being unbounded in terms of rotor radius (R̃) with a global optimum being at R̃→∞. The increase in power and AEP is in this case ΔP=50 % and ΔAEP=70 %, with a baseline being the Betz optimum rotor. With a simple cost function and with the same setup of the problem, a power-per-cost (PpC) optimization resulted in a power-per-cost increase of ΔPpC=4.2 % with a radius increase of ΔR=7.9 % as well as a power increase of ΔP=9.1 %. This was obtained while keeping the same flap moment and reaching a lower thrust of ΔT=-3.8 %. The equivalent for AEP-per-cost (AEPpC) optimization leads to increased cost efficiency of ΔAEPpC=2.9 % with a radius increase of ΔR=17 % and an AEP increase of ΔAEP=13 %, again with the same, maximum flap moment, while the maximum thrust is −9.0 % lower than the baseline.

Abstract. The root flow of wind turbine blades is subjected to complex physical mechanisms that influence significantly the rotor aerodynamic performance. Spanwise flows, the Himmelskamp effect, and the formation of the root vortex are examples of interrelated aerodynamic phenomena that take place in the blade root region. In this study we address those phenomena by means of particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements and Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulations. The numerical results obtained in this study are in very good agreement with the experiments and unveil the details of the intricate root flow. The Himmelskamp effect is shown to delay the stall onset and to enhance the lift force coefficient Cl even at moderate angles of attack. This improvement in the aerodynamic performance occurs in spite of the negative influence of the mentioned effect on the suction peak of the involved blade sections. The results also show that the vortex emanating from the spanwise position of maximum chord length rotates in the opposite direction to the root vortex, which affects the wake evolution. Furthermore, the aerodynamic losses in the root region are demonstrated to take place much more gradually than at the tip.

Abstract. Load calculations play a key role in determining the design loads of different wind turbine components. State of the art in the industry is to use the Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory to calculate the aerodynamic loads. Due to their simplifying assumptions of the rotor aerodynamics, BEM methods have to rely on several engineering correction models to capture the aerodynamic phenomena present in Design Load Cases (DLCs) with turbulent wind. Because of this, BEM methods can overestimate aerodynamic loads under challenging conditions when compared to higher-order aerodynamic methods - such as the Lifting Line Free Vortex Wake (LLFVW) method – leading to unnecessarily high design loads and component costs. In this paper, we give a quantitative answer to the question of BEM load overestimation by comparing the results of aeroelastic load calculations done with the BEM-based OpenFAST code and the QBlade code which uses a LLFVW method. We compare extreme and fatigue load predictions from both codes using 66 ten-minute load simulations of the DTU 10 MW Reference Wind Turbine according to the IEC 61400-1 power production DLC group. Results from both codes show differences in fatigue and extreme load estimations for practically all considered sensors of the turbine. LLFVW simulations predict 4 % and 14 % lower lifetime Damage Equivalent Loads (DELs) for the out-of-plane blade root and the tower base fore-aft bending moments, when compared to BEM simulations. The results also show that lifetime DELs for the yaw bearing tilt- and yaw moments are 2 % and 4 % higher when calculated with the LLFVW code. An ultimate state analysis shows that extreme loads of the blade root out-of-plane and the tower base fore-aft bending moments predicted by the LLFVW simulations are 3 % and 8 % lower than the moments predicted by BEM simulations, respectively. Further analysis reveals that there are two main contributors to these load differences. The first is the different treatment in both codes of the effect that sheared inflow has on the local blade aerodynamics and second is the wake memory effect model which was not included in the BEM simulations.

A free-vortex wake (FVW) model is developed in this paper to analyse the unsteady aerodynamic performance of offshore floating wind turbines. A time-marching algorithm of third-order accuracy is applied in the FVW model. Owing to the complex floating platform motions, the blade inflow conditions and the positions of initial points of vortex filaments, which are different from the fixed wind turbine, are modified in the implemented model. A three-dimensional rotational effect model and a dynamic stall model are coupled into the FVW model to improve the aerodynamic performance prediction in the unsteady conditions. The effects of floating platform motions in the simulation model are validated by comparison between calculation and experiment for a small-scale rigid test wind turbine coupled with a floating tension leg platform (TLP). The dynamic inflow effect carried by the FVW method itself is confirmed and the results agree well with the experimental data of a pitching transient on another test turbine. Also, the flapping moment at the blade root in yaw on the same test turbine is calculated and compares well with the experimental data. Then, the aerodynamic performance is simulated in a yawed condition of steady wind and in an unyawed condition of turbulent wind, respectively, for a large-scale wind turbine coupled with the floating TLP motions, demonstrating obvious differences in rotor performance and blade loading from the fixed wind turbine. The non-dimensional magnitudes of loading changes due to the floating platform motions decrease from the blade root to the blade tip.

Abstract This paper aims to demonstrate the application of control co-design methodology for the rotor blades of a floating offshore wind turbine. A 10 MW reference wind turbine model is utilized in the co-design framework. In this paper, the coupling effect between the system, defined by the pre-cone angle, and the controller, defined by pitch angle, is analyzed with a parametric study. The system parameters of the blade are identified by exciting the system with a step input, and by using the step response. The identified model is used to demonstrate the coupling effects of the structural parameters. The control co-design process is implemented to reduce the blade root bending moment by controlling the pitch angle as a function of the pre-cone angle. Utilizing the 10 MW reference model, the proposed control co-design method can reduce the blade root bending moment and attenuate transverse vibrations faster than the original design. Compared to a sequentially designed controller, the co-design demonstrated reduction of the blade root bending moment with similar attenuation time.
