This research presents Gradient Boosted Tree High Importance Path Snippets (gbt-HIPS), a novel, heuristic method for explaining gradient boosted tree (GBT) classification models by extracting a single classification rule (CR) from the ensemble of decision trees that make up the GBT model. This CR contains the most statistically important boundary values of the input space as antecedent terms. The CR represents a hyper-rectangle of the input space inside which the GBT model is, very reliably, classifying all instances with the same class label as the explanandum instance. In a benchmark test using nine data sets and five competing state-of-the-art methods, gbt-HIPS offered the best trade-off between coverage (0.16–0.75) and precision (0.85–0.98). Unlike competing methods, gbt-HIPS is also demonstrably guarded against under- and over-fitting. A further distinguishing feature of our method is that, unlike much prior work, our explanations also provide counterfactual detail in accordance with widely accepted recommendations for what makes a good explanation.

Abstract We consider analytic and pluriharmonic functions belonging to the classes 𝐵𝑝(Ω) and 𝑏𝑝(Ω) and defined in the ball . The theorems established in the paper make it possible to obtain some integral representations of functions of the above-mentioned classes. The existence of bounded projectors from the space 𝐿(ρ, Ω) into the space 𝐵𝑝(Ω) and from the space 𝐿(ρ, Ω) into the space 𝑏𝑝(Ω) is proved. Also, consideration is given to the existence of boundary values of fractional integrals of functions of the spaces 𝐵𝑝(Ω) and 𝑏𝑝(Ω).

The initial boundary-value problem associated to a semilinear wave equation with time-dependent boundary values was approximated by using the method of lines. Time integration is achieved by means of an explicit time method obtained from an arbitrarily high-order splitting scheme. We propose a technique to incorporate the boundary values that is more accurate than the one obtained in the standard way, which is clearly seen in the numerical experiments. We prove the consistency and convergence, with the same order of the splitting method, of the full discretization carried out with this technique. Although we performed mathematical analysis under the hypothesis that the source term was Lipschitz-continuous, numerical experiments show that this technique works in more general cases.

The loudness growth in 1/2-octave bands (LGOB) procedure has been shown previously to provide valid estimates of loudness growth for adults with normal hearing and those with hearing loss (Allen, Hall, & Jeng, 1990), and it has been widely incorporated into fitting strategies for adult hearing aid users by a hearing aid manufacturer. Here, we applied a simple modification of LGOB to children and adults with normal hearing and then compared the loudness growth functions (as obtained from end-point data) between the two age groups. In addition, reliability data obtained within a single session and between test sessions were compared between the two groups. Large differences were observed in the means between the two groups for the lower boundary values, the upper boundary values, and the range between boundaries both within and across all frequencies. The data obtained from children also had greater variance than the adult data. In addition, there was more variability in the data across test sessions for children. Many test-retest differences for children exceeded 10 dB. Adult test-retest differences were generally less than 10 dB. Although the LGOB with the modifications used in this study may be used to measure loudness growth in children, its poor reliability with this age group may limit its clinical use for children with hearing loss. Additional work is needed to explore whether loudness growth measures can be adapted successfully to children and whether these measures contribute worthwhile information for fitting hearing aids to children.

AbstractWe consider the problem of describing the traces of functions in $$H^2(\Omega )$$ H 2 ( Ω ) on the boundary of a Lipschitz domain $$\Omega $$ Ω of $$\mathbb R^N$$ R N , $$N\ge 2$$ N ≥ 2 . We provide a definition of those spaces, in particular of $$H^{\frac{3}{2}}(\partial \Omega )$$ H 3 2 ( ∂ Ω ) , by means of Fourier series associated with the eigenfunctions of new multi-parameter biharmonic Steklov problems which we introduce with this specific purpose. These definitions coincide with the classical ones when the domain is smooth. Our spaces allow to represent in series the solutions to the biharmonic Dirichlet problem. Moreover, a few spectral properties of the multi-parameter biharmonic Steklov problems are considered, as well as explicit examples. Our approach is similar to that developed by G. Auchmuty for the space $$H^1(\Omega )$$ H 1 ( Ω ) , based on the classical second order Steklov problem.

Extending the unified transform: curvilinear polygons and variable coefficient PDEs

Abstract We provide the first significant extension of the unified transform (also known as the Fokas method) applied to elliptic boundary value problems, namely, we extend the method to curvilinear polygons and partial differential equations (PDEs) with variable coefficients. This is used to solve the generalized Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. The central component of the unified transform is the coupling of certain integral transforms of the given boundary data and of the unknown boundary values. This has become known as the global relation and, in the case of constant coefficient PDEs, simply links the Fourier transforms of the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary values. We extend the global relation to PDEs with variable coefficients and to domains with curved boundaries. Furthermore, we provide a natural choice of global relations for separable PDEs. These generalizations are numerically implemented using a method based on Chebyshev interpolation for efficient and accurate computation of the integral transforms that appear in the global relation. Extensive numerical examples are provided, demonstrating that the method presented in this paper is both accurate and fast, yielding exponential convergence for sufficiently smooth solutions. Furthermore, the method is straightforward to use, involving just the construction of a simple linear system from the integral transforms, and does not require knowledge of Green’s functions of the PDE. Details on the implementation are discussed at length.
