The adsorption and desorption of nitrogen oxide on oxidized and reduced V2O5/Al2O3 catalysts (14.7% (m/m) V2O5) were studied by gravimetry, infrared spectroscopy, and temperature programmed desorption measurements. On the reduced catalyst, NO is adsorbed giving rise to mono- and dinitrosyls which exhibit infrared bands at 1 690, 1 760, 1 820, and 1 895 cm-1. A band also appears at 1 220 cm-1 corresponding to nitrite structures. The ratio between the nitrosyl and nitrite structures is approximately 4 : 1. Desorption at elevated temperatures is associated with the evolution of NO and N2O in a volume ratio of 10 : 1. On the oxidized catalyst the adsorption occurs to an extent at least two order of magnitude lower and no nitrosyls are formed.

AbstractGe is deposited on HfO2 surfaces by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) with GeH4. 0.7-1.0 ML GeHx (x = 0-3) is deposited by thermally cracking GeH4 on a hot tungsten filament. Ge oxidation and bonding are studied at 300-1000 K with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Ge, GeH, GeO, and GeO2 desorption are measured with temperature programmed desorption (TPD) at 400-1000 K. Ge initially reacts with the dielectric forming an oxide layer followed by Ge deposition and formation of nanocrystals in CVD at 870 K. 0.7-1.0 ML GeHx deposited by cracking rapidly forms a contacting oxide layer on HfO2 that is stable from 300-800 K. Ge is fully removed from the HfO2 surface after annealing to 1000 K. These results help explain the stability of Ge nanocrystals in contact with HfO2.

In this work, Ho2O3 nanosheets were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. A series of Sr-modified Ho2O3 nanosheets (Sr-Ho2O3-NS) with a Sr/Ho molar ratio between 0.02 and 0.06 were prepared via an impregnation method. These catalysts were characterized by several techniques such as XRD, N2 adsorption, SEM, TEM, XPS, O2-TPD (temperature-programmed desorption), and CO2-TPD, and they were studied with respect to their performances in the oxidative coupling of methane (OCM). In contrast to Ho2O3 nanoparticles, Ho2O3 nanosheets display greater CH4 conversion and C2-C3 selectivity, which could be related to the preferentially exposed (222) facet on the surface of the latter catalyst. The incorporation of small amounts of Sr into Ho2O3 nanosheets leads to a higher ratio of (O− + O2−)/O2− as well as an enhanced amount of chemisorbed oxygen species and moderate basic sites, which in turn improves the OCM performance. The optimal catalytic behavior is achievable on the 0.04Sr-Ho2O3-NS catalyst with a Sr/Ho molar ratio of 0.04, which gives a 24.0% conversion of CH4 with 56.7% selectivity to C2-C3 at 650 °C. The C2-C3 yield is well correlated with the amount of moderate basic sites present on the catalysts.

Cenospheres from coal fly ashes were used as support in the preparation of Ni–Mg catalysts for dry reforming of methane. These materials were characterized by means of XRD, H2-temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), CO2-temperature-programmed desorption (CO2-TPD), and low-temperature nitrogen sorption techniques. The cenosphere-supported catalysts showed relatively high activity and good stability in the dry reforming of methane (DRM) at 700 °C. The catalytic performance of modified cenospheres was found to depend on both Ni and Mg content. The highest activity at 750 °C and 1 atm was observed for the catalyst containing 30 wt % Mg and 10, 20, and 30 wt % Ni, yielding to CO2 and CH4 conversions of around 95%.

The feasibility of fabricating better solid acid catalysts using nonthermal plasma (NTP) technology for biobased acrolein production is demonstrated. NTP discharge exposure was integrated in catalyst fabrication in air or argon atmosphere. The fabricated catalysts were characterized by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area analysis, temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia, X-ray powder diffraction and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy of pyridine adsorption, in comparison to regularly prepared catalysts as a control. Further, kinetic results collected via glycerol dehydration experiments were compared, and improvement in acrolein selectivity was displayed when the catalyst was fabricated in the argon NTP, but not in the air NTP. Possible mechanisms for the improvement were also discussed.

AbstractWith the purpose of studying the influence of NO/O2 on the NOx storage activity, a Pt-Ba-Ce/γ-Al2O3 catalyst was synthesized by an acid-aided sol-gel method. The physical and chemical properties of the catalyst were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) methods. The results showed that the composition of the catalyst was well-crystallized and the crystalline size of CeO2 (111) was about 5.7 nm. The mechanism of NO and NO2 storage and NOx temperature programmed desorption (NO-TPD) experiments were investigated to evaluate the NOx storage capacity of the catalyst. Pt-Ba-Ce/γ-Al2O3 catalyst presented the supreme NOx storage performance at 350℃, and the maximum value reached to 668.8 μmol / gcat. Compared with O2-free condition, NO oxidation to NO2 by O2 had a beneficial effect on the storage performance of NOx. NO-TPD test results showed that the NOx species stored on the catalyst surface still kept relatively stable even below 350℃.
