Purpose: To evaluate the effect of denatonium benzoate (DB) in histamine-induced model of inflammation and the effect of the selective H1 receptor agonist (2-(2-Pyridyl) ethylamine) on rat gastric smooth muscle strips pretreated with DB.Methods: The anti-inflammatory effect of DB was evaluated in vivo on histamine-induced rat paw edema. In vitro studies on spontaneous muscle contraction were performed on smooth muscle strips isolated from rat gastric corpus.Results: The results showed a well-defined anti-inflammatory effect of DB (15 mg/kg) during the early stage of rat paw edema at the 15th (p < 0.001), 30th (p < 0.01) and 60th min (p < 0.001) compared to control. In vitro experiments indicated reduced spontaneous contractile activity of smooth muscle strips to H1 receptor agonist in the presence of DB (0.5 μM). The vascular effects of histamine are mediated by H1 receptors. Substances, which reduce the effect of histamine on the H1 receptors could influence the early stage of histamine-induced inflammation.Conclusion: The results show that the anti-inflammatory activity of DB probably is related to its antagonistic activity on histamine H1 receptors. Background: Carica papaya is very useful vegetables for daily living. Objective: The purpose of the present study was to compare the anti-inflammatory effect of ethanolic extract of Carica papaya leaves and indomethacin in carrageenan induced rat paw edema animal model. Methodology: This was an animal study carried out in the Department of Pharmacology at Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from July 2014 to June 2015 for a period of one (01) year. The leaves of Carica Papaya collected from Botanical garden, Mirpur, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The animals were divided into four groups. Inflammation was produced by injecting 0.1 ml of 1% carrageenan solution in normal saline in all experimental animals. Group I were served as control that received normal saline. Group II were received ethanolic extract of Carica Papaya. Group III were received ethanolic extract of Carica Papaya leaves. Group IV were received indomethacin. Result: The experiment was carried out on 48 Long Evan Norwegian rats. Rats were divided in 4 groups of six animals each. The mean initial antero-posterior diameter of rat’s paw of group I, II, III and IV were 3.83±0.04, 2.12±0.02, 1.74±0.01 and 1.60±0.03 respectively. The inhibition of edema formation were 44.64%, 54.57% and 58.22% in group II, III and IV respectively. Background: Inflammation is complex biological response of body tissues to foreign particles or pathogens. However, adverse effects of anti-inflammatory drugs, necessitate the search for a novel compound from herbal origin. Beta vulgaris rubra or red beetroot, a vegetable plant, is known to possess various beneficial effects. Present study aimed to evaluate the anti inflammatory effect of beet roots in animal models.Methods: Carrageenan-induced and Complete Freund’s adjuvant-induced rat paw edema model were used to assess the acute and chronic anti- inflammatory potential of the Beetroot as compared to standard drug, Diclofenac Sodium.Results: Oral administration of Beetroot extract showed carrageenan-induced rat paw edema inhibition by 26.9%, 34.6% and 50% for beetroot 100mg/Kg, 200mg/Kg and 400mg/Kg, respectively, at the end of four hours. In vivo results noted that percentage inhibition of paw volume and ankle diameter of the Complete Freund’s adjuvant-induced rats were significantly higher for the groups consuming 100 and 200mg/Kg Beetroot extracts. Paw volume of the rats in these two groups reduced by 35% and 30% respectively as compared to the control.Conclusions: Thus, beetroot was found to possess anti-inflammatory property in animals. Further investigations are essential to validate the bioactive components responsible for this property.
