Auditory stimuli initiate ascending activity in large fibres of the ventral nerve cord of the cricket, Acheta domesticus, and the cockroach, Periplaneta americana. This auditory responsiveness is reduced during locomotion. An earlier study concluded that the depression of responsiveness was mediated by descending inhibition. However, the auditory responsiveness is reduced during locomotion even after section of the ventral nerve cord anterior to the abdominal recording electrodes. Further, auditory responsiveness of isolated abdomens attached to intact animals is inhibited during locomotion of their hosts. Laminar wind streams over the cerci depress responsiveness to sound, but only at velocities markedly higher than those encountered by freely walking animals. Although the exact mechanism is not known, the depressed auditory responsiveness can occur independently of any descending influences.

As part of a continual search for potential pathogens of insects for use in biological control or on an integrated pest management program, two bacilliform virus-like particles (VLP) of similar morphology have been found in the Mexican bean beetle Epilachna varivestis Mulsant and the house cricket, Acheta domesticus (L. ).Tissues of diseased larvae and adults of E. varivestis and all developmental stages of A. domesticus were fixed according to procedures previously described. While the bean beetles displayed no external symptoms, the diseased crickets displayed a twitching and shaking of the metathoracic legs and a lowered rate of activity.Examinations of larvae and adult Mexican bean beetles collected in the field in 1976 and 1977 in Maryland and field collected specimens brought into the lab in the fall and reared through several generations revealed that specimens from each collection contained vesicles in the cytoplasm of the midgut filled with hundreds of these VLP's which were enveloped and measured approximately 16-25 nm x 55-110 nm, the shorter VLP's generally having the greater width (Fig. 1).

Kecoa merupakan serangga yang suka hidup ditempat terlindung, tertutup maupun lipatan-lipatan sehingga susah diberantas, akan tetapi serangga tersebut mempunyai alat komunikasi yang  digunakan untuk memanggil sesamanya untuk berkumpul yang disebut aggregation pheromone. Aggregation pheromone ini diteliti untuk dimanfaatkan sebagai salah satu cara pengendaliannya. Pada penelitian ini aggregation pheromone diteliti dengan mengekstrak kotoran kecoa dengan berbagai macam pelarut dan hasil ekstraknya diuji secara biologi ditunjukkan dengan banyaknya kecoa yang datang dan berkumpul pada ekstrak AP tersebut. Dalam penelitian ini pelarut methanol merupakan pelarut yang paling baik dalam ekstraksi AP yang ditunjukkan adanya 80% kecoa yang datang berkumpul. Dari ekstraksi tersebut setelah dianalisa dengan alat kromatografi gas diperoleh senyawa aktif yang merupakan Aggregation pheromone dari kecoa Periplaneta americana L.  Senyawa tersebut diduga periplanon A dan periplanon B dengan waktu retensi 25,417 menit dan senyawa B dengan waktu retensi 27,007 menit.

Glycogen Phosphorylase in the Fat Body of Two Cockroach Species, Periplaneta americana and Nauphoeta cinerea: Isolation, Partial Characterization of Three Forms and Activation by Hypertrehalosaemic Hormones

The presence of endogenous phosphorylase kinase and phosphorylase phosphatase in crude extracts of fat bodies from the cockroaches Nauphoeta cinerea and Periplaneta americana is demonstrated in vitro by activation/inactivation of glycogen phosphorylase under appropriate conditions. Fractionation of fat body extracts of both cockroach species on an anion-exchange medium results in the elution of three peaks with phosphorylase activity. According to their AMP dependency these activity peaks are designated as phosphorylase b (inactive without AMP), phosphorylase ab (active without AMP, but several stimulated with AMP) and phosphorylase a (active without AMP). It is shown chromatographically that incubating crude extracts of fat bodies from both cockroaches, under conditions where the phosphorylase kinase is active, results in all phosphorylase b being converted to the ab- or a-form , whereas under conditions where the phosphorylase phosphatase is active all phophorylase a is converted to the ab- or b-form . Endogenous phosphorylase kinase of N. cinerea crude fat body extract can convert vertebrate phosphorylase b into the a-form , and, conversely, vertebrate muscle p hosphorylase kinase and phosphorylase phosphatase, respectively, are able to convert partially purified N. cinerea phosphorylase aborb and the ab- und a-form , respectively. In resting cockroaches most of the phosphorylase activity resides in the b-form and only a small fraction (10% ) in the a-form , whereas between 26% (N . cinerea) and 35% (P. americana) occurs in the ab-form . Injection of endogenous hypertrehalosaemic peptides into N. cinerea (the decapeptide Bld-HrTH ) or P. americana (the two octapeptides Pea-CAH -I and II) causes interconversion of phosphorylase; after injection, mainly (60% ) phosphorylase a is present, while 25% and 15% exists in the ab- und b-form , respectively. Purification of the three phosphorylase forms from N. cinerea is achieved by anion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-Sephacel followed by affinity chromatography on AMP-Sepharose. The final specific activities are 2.1, 6.9 and 27.2 U /mg protein for the a-, ab- und b-form . The molecular mass of the active molecules on gel filtration is between 173,000 and 177,000, and SDS gel electrophoresis reveals a subunit mass of 87,100, suggesting a homodimeric structure for all three form s. Kinetic studies show hyperbolic saturation curves for the substrates glycogen and Pi respectively, with Kᴍ-values of 0.021, 0.019 and 0.073% for glycogen and 8.3, 6.3 and 17.9 mᴍ for Pi (a-, ab- and b-form ). Phosphorylase a exhibits a more or less hyperbolic response to AMP and needs 70 |iM A M P for m axim al stim ulation. The kinetics for the ab- and b-form s are sigm oidal and maximal activities are displayed at about 3 mᴍ (half-maximum activation as calculated from Hill plots are 55 and 280 μᴍ for the ab- und b-form , respectively). Caffeine is a strong inhibitor of the b-form , but has only a slight inhibiting effect (10 -20 % ) on the ab- and a-form in the presence of AMP.

We provide an updated checklist of Orthoptera and their allies for each Maritime province of Canada with details for 21 new species records. Drumming Katydid (Meconema thalassinum), recorded from Nova Scotia (NS) and Prince Edward Island (PEI), and Sprinkled Grasshopper (Chloealtis conspersa), recorded from New Brunswick (NB) are reported for the first time from the Maritimes as a whole. We report range extensions in the Maritime region for Australian Cockroach (Periplaneta australasiae; NB), Treetop Bush Katydid (Scudderia fasciata; NS), Short-legged Camel Cricket (Ceuthophilus brevipes; PEI), Spotted Camel Cricket (Ceuthophilus maculatus; PEI), Roesel’s Shield-backed Katydid (Roeseliana roesellii; NS), and Black-horned Tree Cricket (Oecanthus nigricornis; PEI). Short-winged Mole Cricket (Neoscapteriscus abbreviatus; NB) and European Mole Cricket (Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa; NS) are reported as adventives (non-native species that are believed to be not yet established), new to Canada from the Maritimes. Other new records for species not known to be established are Lined Earwig (Doru taeniatum; NS), Australian Cockroach (Periplaneta australasiae; PEI), American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana; NB), Brown Cockroach (Periplaneta brunnea; PEI), Smooth Cockroach (Nyctibora laevigata; NB), West Indian Leaf Cockroach (Blaberus discoidalis; NB), an unidentified Parcoblatta species (NB), Brown-banded Cockroach (Supella longipalpa; PEI), Praying Mantis (Mantis religiosa; NB), and American Bird Grasshopper (Schistocerca americana; NS).

Determination of fatty acid content in some edible insects of Mexico

In the present paper we have determined the fatty acid content of some edible insects of Mexico. A comparative analysis of the insect species studied in this research showed that caproic acid was present in a minimal proportion which ranged between 0.01 for Periplaneta americana (nymphs) and 0.06 (g/100 g, dry basis) for Euschistus strenuus. The highest proportion of caprilic acid (0.09) was found in Tenebrio molitor (adults). Atta sp. had the highest amount of capric acid (0.26). Polistes sp. was found to be rich in lauric acid (0.77) and for myristic acid it had the highest content (5.64). Dactylopius sp. and E. strenuus were rich in palmitic acid (14.89). Euschistus taxcoensis had the highest quantity of palmitoleic acid (12.06). Llaveia axin exhibited the highest quantity of stearic acid (22.75). Polistes sp. was found to be rich in oleic acid (38.28). The highest quantity of linoleic acid was observed in T. molitor (larvae) (10.89), and in L. axin the highest content of linolenic acid (7.82) was obtained. A comparison between the species under the present investigation revealed that, in general, the insects are poor in caproic, caprilic, capric, lauric, myristic, palmitoleic and linolenic acids, because the quantities were either minimal or could not be detected at all. They had moderate quantities of stearic, palmitic and linoleic acids and had high quantities of oleic acid. Finally it was concluded that although a particular insect species is unable to fulfil the total fatty acid need for a human, if consumed in combination they could definitely be able to supply a good amount of this highly valued nutrient.
