Crop vegetative and reproductive development are frequently divided into stages to describe progression of development. Such a description is useful in denoting developmental differences between cultivars, for making crop management decisions based on growth stages, and for clear communication among individuals concerned with research, management, and production of the crop. We have developed such a scale for leaf bud development in rabbiteye blueberry (Vaccinium ashei Reade). Our scale has six stages briefly described as follows: 1) dormant bud; 2) early green tip; 3) late green tip; 4) unfolding stage; 5) mouse-ear stage; 6) fully opened bud. Categorizing buds in this manner has proven useful in comparing rates of leaf development between cultivars and in response to winter chilling. The stages appear to be relevant to highbush blueberries (V. corymbosum) as well.

Background: The fruits with the seeds of Dracunculus vulgaris Schott. (Araceae) are used against inflammatory diseases in Turkey. Objective: Present study was designed to justify this folkloric usage type of the plant. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the anti-inflammatory activity of D. vulgaris. Methods: Petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts were prepared from the fruits, successively. Carrageenan-, serotonin-, and prostaglandin E2-induced hind paw edema; acetic acid–induced capillary permeability and 12-O-tetradecanoyl-phorbol-13-acetate–induced mouse ear edema models were used to assess the antiinflammatory activity of the extracts. The analgesic activity was experienced by using p-benzoquinone-induced abdominal constriction test. Results: The petroleum ether extract displayed the highest activities in all of the used test models compared with the control group. Therefore, the constituents of this extract were determined by using gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy (GC–MS). Linoleic acid was found to be major constituent of the petroleum ether extract of D. vulgaris. Conclusion: This study has provided some justification for the folkloric use of the plant.

Carfilzomib is mainly used to treat multiple myeloma. Several side effects have been reported in patients treated with carfilzomib, especially those associated with cardiovascular events, such as hypertension, congestive heart failure, and coronary artery disease. However, the side effects, especially the manifestation of cardiovascular events through capillaries, have not been fully investigated. Here, we performed a pilot experiment to monitor peripheral vascular dynamics in a mouse ear under the effects of carfilzomib using a quantitative photoacoustic vascular evaluation method. Before and after injecting the carfilzomib, bortezomib, and PBS solutions, we acquired high-resolution three-dimensional PAM data of the peripheral vasculature of the mouse ear during each experiment for 10 h. Then, the PAM maximum amplitude projection (MAP) images and five quantitative vascular parameters, i.e., photoacoustic (PA) signal, diameter, density, length fraction, and fractal dimension, were estimated. Quantitative results showed that carfilzomib induces a strong effect on the peripheral vascular system through a significant increase in all vascular parameters up to 50%, especially during the first 30 min after injection. Meanwhile, bortezomib and PBS do not have much impact on the peripheral vascular system. This pilot study verified PAM as a comprehensive method to investigate peripheral vasculature, along with the effects of carfilzomib. Therefore, we expect that PAM may be useful to predict cardiovascular events caused by carfilzomib.

3-Deoxy-3-oxoingenol (3) was prepared from ingenol-5,20-acetonide (25) by oxidation and subsequent removal of the acetonide. 3 was acylated to give homologous 5,20-diacylates 5-9. From these the 5-monoacylates 14, 15 and 17 were obtained in only moderate yields. Therefore the 20-silyl ether 10 (prepared from 3) was acylated. After smooth removal of the silyl ether the homologous 5-acylates 16. 18 and 19 resulted in good yield. The 5,20-dibutyrate 6 and all 5-acylates prepared (14-19) showed no irritant activity on the mouse ear. The 3-oxo-5-acylates 14-19 could not be reduced to give ingenol-5-acylates (24). Therefore various ingenol derivatives, 29-32, with suitable protected hydroxyl functions as well as the corresponding 5-clecanoates 35-38 were synthesized. The protecting groups of the derivatives 35-38 could however not be cleaved off to yield ingenol-5- decanoate (24)

AbstractLaser diodes (LDs) have been considered as cost-effective and compact excitation sources to overcome the requirement of costly and bulky pulsed laser sources that are commonly used in photoacoustic microscopy (PAM). However, the spatial resolution and/or imaging speed of previously reported LD-based PAM systems have not been optimized simultaneously. In this paper, we developed a high-speed and high-resolution LD-based PAM system using a continuous wave LD, operating at a pulsed mode, with a repetition rate of 30 kHz, as an excitation source. A hybrid scanning mechanism that synchronizes a one-dimensional galvanometer mirror and a two-dimensional motorized stage is applied to achieve a fast imaging capability without signal averaging due to the high signal-to-noise ratio. By optimizing the optical system, a high lateral resolution of 4.8 μm has been achieved. In vivo microvasculature imaging of a mouse ear has been demonstrated to show the high performance of our LD-based PAM system.
