Amazonia comprises a mosaic of contrasting habitats, with wide environmental heterogeneity at local and regional scales. In central Amazonia, upland forest (terra firme) is the predominant forest type and seasonally flooded forests inundated by white- and black-water rivers (várzea and igapó, respectively) represent around 20% of the forested areas. In this work, we took advantage of a natural spatial arrangement of the main vegetation types in central Amazonia to investigate butterfly assemblage structure in terra firme, várzea and igapó forests at the local scale. We sampled in the low- and high-water seasons, combining active and passive sampling with traps placed in both the understory and canopy. Terra firme supported the highest number of butterfly species, whereas várzea forest provided the highest number of butterfly captures. The high species richness in terra firme may reflect that this forest type is floristically richer than várzea and igapó. Várzea is a very productive environment and may thus support a higher number of butterfly individuals than terra firme and igapó. Most butterfly species (80.2%) were unique to a single forest type and 17 can be considered forest type indicator species in this landscape. Floodplain forest environments are therefore an important complement to terra firme in terms of butterfly species richness and conservation in Amazonia.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a produção e decomposição de serapilheira em uma área de floresta primária de terra firme na Reserva Biológica do Jaru. Para tanto, foi implantada uma parcela permanente de 1 hectare, onde foram demarcadas 25 subparcelas com 20 x 20 m cada. Para a coleta de serapilheira, instalou-se 25 coletores de PVC (1 em cada centro da subparcela), medindo 0,25 m², a 1 metro do solo, com malha de nylon de 1 mm. Para estimar o estoque de serapilheira, utilizou-se 25 coletores de madeira, medindo 0,25 m², com malha de nylon de 1 mm, dispostos no solo de cada subparcela. As coletas da pesquisa foram realizadas quinzenalmente, entre os meses de outubro de 2016 a setembro de 2017, e a serapilheira triada nas frações: folha, galho, material reprodutivo e miscelânea. No laboratório, os materiais amostrados foram secos em estufa à 80 ºC e pesados em balança de precisão centesimal, sendo que a decomposição de serapilheira foi estimada através da relação entre produção e estoque. De acordo com os resultados obtidos, a produção de serapilheira total foi de 14,13 Mg ha-1 e as frações seguiram o padrão: folhamiscelâneagalhomaterial reprodutivo. As maiores produções aconteceram na estação seca e a taxa de decomposição foi 1,37, indicando que a atividade microbiana na área de estudo é acelerada.Palavras-chave: dinâmica sazonal; nutrição de plantas; ecologia florestal; decomposição. LITTER DYNAMICS IN A FOREST AREA OF GROUND FIRM, WESTERN AMAZON ABSTRACT:The objective of this study was to evaluate the litter production and decomposition in an area of primary upland forest in the Jaru Biological Reserve. For that, a permanent plot of 1 hectare was implanted, where 25 subplots with 20 x 20 m each were demarcated. For the collection of litter, 25 PVC collectors were installed (1 in each center of the subplot), measuring 0.25 m², 1 meter from the ground, with 1 mm nylon mesh. To estimate the litter stock, 25 wood collectors, measuring 0.25 m², with 1 mm nylon mesh, were used, arranged in the soil of each subplot. The collections of the research were carried out fortnightly, between the months of October 2016 and September 2017, and the litter is sorted in the fractions: leaf, branch, reproductive material and miscellaneous. In the laboratory, the sampled materials were dried in an oven at 80 ºC and weighed on a centesimal precision scale, and the litter decomposition was estimated through the relationship between production and stock. According to the results obtained, the total litter production was 14.13 Mg ha-1 and the fractions followed the pattern: leafmiscellaneousbranchreproductive material. The highest yields occurred in the dry season and the decomposition rate was 1.37, indicating that the microbial activity in the study area is accelerated.Keyword: seasonal dynamics; plant nutrition; forest ecology; decomposition.

O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a variação da estrutura diamétrica de uma comunidade arbórea em floresta densa de terra firme e dos principais grupos de espécies de estágios iniciais e tardios de sucessão, bem como caracterizar a estrutura vertical da floresta. Em 2016, foram inventariadas todas as árvores com DAP ≥ 10 cm e mensuradas suas alturas. Em 2017, as árvores foram reamostradas. A estrutura diamétrica foi analisada por meio do quociente “q” De Liocourt para: a comunidade, principais espécies de maior VI e os grupos ecológicos (GE). A análise da estrutura vertical da vegetação foi feita pela distribuição do número de árvores nos estratos, utilizando-se três métodos: (I) – Sanquetta (1995), (II) - Souza (1990), e (III) – Souza et al. (2003). A estrutura diamétrica da comunidade e dos GE no período avaliado foi caracterizada por árvores de pequeno porte nas menores classes de diâmetro. O Método II não trouxe bons resultados sobre o comportamento das espécies no estrato médio por apresentar fortes tendências em concentrar um maior número de indivíduos nesse estrato. Os resultados da estrutura altimétrica e diamétrica demonstraram indicativos que a exploração antrópica no passado alterou a estrutura da floresta.Palavras-chave: espécies amazônicas, “q” De Licocourt, estratificação, incremento. STRUCTURE AND DYNAMICS IN A DENSE OF TERRA FIRME FOREST, SOUTHEAST OF AMAPÁ, BRAZIL ABSTRACT:The study aimed to analyze the variation of the diameter structure of a arboreal community in a dense terra firme forest and the main groups of species of early and late stages of succession, as well as characterize the vertical structure of the forest. In 2016, all trees with DBH ≥ 10 cm were inventoried and their heights measured indirectly. In 2017, the trees were re-measured. The diametric structure was analyzed using the "q" De Liocourt quotient for: the community, major species of higher (VI) and ecological groups (EG). The analysis of the vertical structure of the vegetation was made by the distribution of the number of trees in the strata, using three methods: (I) – Sanquetta (1995), (II) - Souza (1990), and (III) – Souza et al. (2003). The diametric structure of the community and the EG during the period evaluated was characterized by small trees in the smallest diameter classes. Method II did not bring good results on the behavior of the species in the middle stratum because it presents strong tendencies to concentrate a greater number of individuals in this stratum. The results of the altimetric and diametric structure have demonstrated that antropic exploration in the past has altered the structure of the forest.Keywords: amazonian species, “q” De Licocourt, stratification, increment.

A new species of Humiriaceae, Vantanea maculicarpa, growing in French Guiana terra-firme forest is described and illustrated. This new species is distinguished from all other species of Vantanea by fruits covered by white lenticels, a character so far unknown in this genus. It also presents a pubescent intrastaminal disk, a feature encountered in two other Vantanea species only: it is further distinguished from V. parviflora, the morphologically most similar species, by more stamens and from V. ovicarpa by a much smaller rough endocarp with five valves. A key to the species of French Guiana and the IUCN status Least Concern (LC) are proposed.
