Lath martensite is a complex hierarchical compound structure that forms during rapid cooling of carbon steels from the austenitic phase. At the smallest, i.e., ‘single crystal’ scale, individual, elongated domains, form the elemental microstructural building blocks: the name-giving laths. Several laths of nearly identical crystallographic orientation are grouped together to blocks, in which–depending on the exact material characteristics–clearly distinguishable subblocks might be observed. Several blocks with the same habit plane together form a packet of which typically three to four together finally make up the former parent austenitic grain. Here, a fully parametrized approach is presented which converts an austenitic polycrystal representation into martensitic microstructures incorporating all these details. Two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) Representative Volume Elements (RVEs) are generated based on prior austenite microstructure reconstructed from a 2D experimental martensitic microstructure. The RVEs are used for high-resolution crystal plasticity simulations with a fast spectral method-based solver and a phenomenological constitutive description. The comparison of the results obtained from the 2D experimental microstructure and the 2D RVEs reveals a high quantitative agreement. The stress and strain distributions and their characteristics change significantly if 3D microstructures are used. Further simulations are conducted to systematically investigate the influence of microstructural parameters, such as lath aspect ratio, lath volume, subblock thickness, orientation scatter, and prior austenitic grain shape on the global and local mechanical behavior. These microstructural features happen to change the local mechanical behavior, whereas the average stress–strain response is not significantly altered. Correlations between the microstructure and the plastic behavior are established.

During manufacturing the welded joint of steel structures, residual stress is produced and weld metal is used inevitably. And residual stress and weld metal influence on the static and dynamic mechanical behavior of steel structures. Therefore, to predict the mechanical behavior of steel pile with a welded joint during static and dynamic deformation, the research on the influence of the welded joints on the static and dynamic behavior of steel pile is clarified. In this paper, the residual stress distribution in a welded joint of steel piles was investigated by using three-dimensional welding analysis. The static and dynamic mechanical behavior of steel piles with a welded joint is investigated by three-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element analysis using a proposed dynamic hysteresis model. Numerical analyses of the steel pile with a welded joint were compared to that without a welded joint with respect to load carrying capacity and residual stress distribution. The influence of the welded joint on the mechanical behavior of steel piles during static and dynamic deformation was clarified by comparing analytical results

AbstractThe objective of this work lies in the three-dimensional study of the thermo mechanical behavior of a blade of a centrifugal compressor. Numerical modeling is performed on the computational code "ABAQUS" based on the finite element method. The aim is to study the impact of the change of types of blades, which are defined as a function of wheel output angle β2, on the stress fields and displacements coupled with the variation of the temperature.This coupling defines in a realistic way the thermo mechanical behavior of the blade where one can note the important concentrations of stresses and displacements in the different zones of its complex form as well as the effects at the edges. It will then be possible to prevent damage and cracks in the blades of the centrifugal compressor leading to its failure which can be caused by the thermal or mechanical fatigue of the material with which the wheel is manufactured.

Fibreglass reinforced flexible pipe (FRFP) is regarded as a great alternative to many bonded flexible pipes in the field of oil or gas transportation in shallow water. This paper describes an analysis of the mechanical behavior of FRFP under torsion. The mechanical behavior of FRFP subjected to pure torsion was investigated by experimental, analytical and numerical methods. Firstly, this paper presents experimental studies of three 10-layer FRFP subjected to torsional load. Torque-torsion angle relations were recorded during this test. Then, a theoretical model based on three-dimensional (3D) anisotropic elasticity theory was proposed to study the mechanical behavior of FRFP. In addition, a finite element model (FEM) including reinforced layers and PE layers was used to simulate the torsional load condition in ABAQUS. Torque-torsion angle relations obtained from these three methods agree well with each other, which illustrates the accuracy and reliability of the analytical model and FEM. The impact of fibreglass winding angle, thickness of reinforced layers and radius-thickness ratio were also studied. Conclusions obtained from this research may be of great practicality to manufacturing engineers.

The research has been carried out for the purpose of a complex numerical three-dimensional modeling of the stressed state of taps and tees of main gas pipelines taking into account the gas-dynamic processes occurring in these shaped elements and the temperature difference in their walls. A 3D modeling of the elbow with a 90° angle and a reinforcing pad on the main line and the drainage of the passage line of the trunk of the main gas pipeline has been carried out. There has been studied the gas flow with 3D models of shaped elements of the main gas pipeline by means of the CFD modeling. The simulation has been рerformed for the equidistant tees in which the entire flow from the main stream flows into its branch. The mathematical model is based on the solution of the Navier–Stokes equation system, continuity equation, closed by a two-parametric k -e model of the Launder–Sharma turbulence with corresponding initial and boundary conditions. The simulation results are visualized in the ANSYS Fluent R18.2 Academic Postprocessor by constructing the pressure fields on the contours and in the longitudinal and transverse sections of shaped elements. The exact values of pressure at different points of the inner cavity of the shaped elements have been determined, the places of rise and fall of pressure identified. There have been performed the simulation of the temperature difference in the walls of the drainage, the trunk of the main gas pipeline in the module ANSYS Transient Thermal. The results of CFD and temperature modeling were imported into the mechanical module ANSYS Static Structural, where the finite element method was used to simulate the stressed state of the shaped elements of the main gas pipeline, taking into account the gas-dynamic processes occurring in their internal cavity and the temperature difference in the walls. The results of the simulation have been visualized by constructing a three-dimensional color fields of equivalent von Mises stresses in the tee and in the elbow. The places of the maximum equivalent stresses in the wall of the studied shaped elements have been revealed.

Three-dimensional (3D) bioplotting has been widely used to print hydrogel scaffolds for tissue engineering applications. One issue involved in 3D bioplotting is to achieve the scaffold structure with the desired mechanical properties. To overcome this issue, various numerical methods have been developed to predict the mechanical properties of scaffolds, but limited by the imperfect representation of one key feature of scaffolds fabricated by 3D bioplotting, i.e., the penetration or fusion of strands in one layer into the previous layer. This paper presents our study on the development of a novel numerical model to predict the elastic modulus (one important index of mechanical properties) of 3D bioplotted scaffolds considering the aforementioned strand penetration. For this, the finite element method was used for the model development, while medium-viscosity alginate was selected for scaffold fabrication by the 3D bioplotting technique. The elastic modulus of the bioplotted scaffolds was characterized using mechanical testing and results were compared with those predicted from the developed model, demonstrating a strong congruity between them. Once validated, the developed model was also used to investigate the effect of other geometrical features on the mechanical behavior of bioplotted scaffolds. Our results show that the penetration, pore size, and number of printed layers have significant effects on the elastic modulus of bioplotted scaffolds; and also suggest that the developed model can be used as a powerful tool to modulate the mechanical behavior of bioplotted scaffolds.
