Abstract This paper discusses methods to retrieve design(s) from a design library in order to achieve a better initial starting point for the iterative model of the design process. The motivation for doing this is to reduce the extensive analysis time required for many iterative design problems. Starting a design at a favorable initial point should help reduce the number of iterations. Four initial design methods have been investigated varying from a simple non-library method to methods that use designs from a library. To evaluate the effectiveness of these methods, the initial design methods were tested on four example problems. They are, a cantilever beam, a gear-pair, a v-belt and an extruder-die. It was found that the number of iterations reduced approximately as 1/n, where n is the number of stored values in the design library.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose a hybrid decision-making model for optimizing the initial design strategies of pre-sales housing, identifying factors affecting the initial design of housing, and developing different initial design approaches and strategies based on buyers’ preferences. Design/methodology/approach Indicators and factors in line with the local initial planning and design are created according to the design quality indicator framework. The important indicators and factors are screened out preliminarily with the fuzzy Delphi method and decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory based analytic network process. The performances of two actual cases under similar site conditions are checked with regard to the overall residential sales rate and time on the market (TOM). Findings The result shows that the proposed model can effectively improve the sales rate, shorten the TOM and better complies with buyer design strategy demands, and thus positively correlating to economic value. Originality/value Pre-sales make possible the customized strategy of allowing future residents to participate in the housing design process. However, buyers’ participation in the design process is highly limited, and developers usually determine their planning and initial residential design strategies based on experience and intuition. With the proposed approach, the initial residential design of a project can be effectively intervened, so that home users can truly participate in the design, and the residential construction service can be provided in a unique, but non-universal way.

This reflection essay focuses on the problems inherent in the design and development of an online public speaking course, which in part result from presuming the course must mirror its face-to-face counterpart. Based on our own experiences and background in designing an online public speaking course, we recommend that instructors and administrators of this course solve such problems by employing design strategies that effectively adapt the course content and pedagogy to a digital context. The essay begins with a description of an integrated course design model (Fink, 2005) that proved useful to us for accomplishing this task. Then we discuss how we used the four components of the initial design stage of this model to take advantage of opportunities for teaching public speaking online.

Abstract We describe a system called LearnIT that can observe an iterative solution to a parametric design problem and learn the design strategy employed. The program represents the strategy as a set of rules, which it then uses to automatically generate new design solutions when the design requirements change. Because the rules are learned from the original designer, these new solutions reflect the original designer’s engineering judgment and knowledge of implicit constraints. LearnIT’s approach is based on the observation that often iterative design is actually a form of debugging: each iteration is an attempt to repair a particular flaw in the design. Thus, a program can learn the designer’s strategy by observing what actions are taken in response to each kind of flaw. We have found that the state of the design constraints (satisfied or not satisfied) is a good indicator of what flaws are being addressed at any given time. Because of its ability to capture and reuse the original designer’s understanding of the problem, LearnIT’s primary use is as a design documentation system. However, because it can learn and reuse a design strategy, it can also be considered a design automation tool.

We describe LearnIT, a computer program that can observe an iterative solution to a parametric design problem and learn the design strategy employed. When the design requirements change, the program uses the learned strategy to automatically generate a new solution in the “style” of the original. The program uses a specialized instance-based learning method based on the observation that iterative design is often a form of debugging—each iteration is an attempt to repair a particular flaw in the design. Thus, the program learns the design strategy by observing what actions are taken in response to each kind of flaw. [S1050-0472(00)01203-4]

Abstract A tire slips circumferentially on the rim when subjected to a driving or braking torque greater than the maximum tire-rim frictional torque. The balance of the tire-rim assembly achieved with weight attachment at certain circumferential locations in tire mounting is then lost, and vibration or adverse effects on handling may result when the tire is rolled. Bead fitment refers to the fit between a tire and its rim, and in particular, to whether a gap exists between the two. Rim slip resistance, or the maximum tire-rim frictional torque, is the integral of the product of contact pressure, friction coefficient, and the distance to the wheel center over the entire tire-rim interface. Analytical solutions and finite element analyses were used to study the dependence of the contact pressure distribution on tire design and operating attributes such as mold ring profile, bead bundle construction and diameter, and inflation pressure, etc. The tire-rim contact pressure distribution consists of two parts. The pressure on the ledge and the flange, respectively, comes primarily from tire-rim interference and inflation. Relative contributions of the two to the total rim slip resistance vary with tire types, depending on the magnitudes of ledge interference and inflation pressure. Based on the analyses, general guidelines are established for bead design modification to improve rim slip resistance and mountability, and to reduce the sensitivity to manufacturing variability. An iterative design and analysis procedure is also developed to improve bead fitment.

Abstract: A house is a basic need for every human’s life. It is not only a place for shelter, but also a place for a family to live, to have social interaction between them, to raise the children, and to give the values of life. Padma Residence is a modern residence which is built by PT. Surya Coco Jaya. Most of its residents make changes to their houses after they occupy it. The main purpose of this study is to observe changes toward the initial design by comparing the initial design and present condition, recording the present condition of the house when it has occupied by determine architectural elements which are changed, determining causal factors of changes, and finding out dominant causal factors toward alteration of architectural elements of the house at Padma Residence, Bantul, Yogyakarta while it is occupied. Methods used in data collecting are literature study and a field survey. A field survey includes observation, interview, and distributing questionnaires to 25 respondents who are the owners of houses in this residence. Data analysis used table which compare the initial design and nowadays condition. The result of data processing and analyzing reveals that the owners do physical changes at their houses while they occupy them, particularly at the front appearance of the house. The changes include the addition of canopies at carport and changes in the layout of the rooms, such as kitchen, dining room, and backyard. A dominant factor which has caused those changes is the function of rooms which is added to the house. Keywords: residence, physical changes, the additon of functionAbstrak : Rumah merupakan kebutuhan utama bagi kehidupan setiap manusia.
