AbstractWe introduce and investigate an adaptation of Fourier series to set-valued functions (multifunctions, SVFs) of bounded variation. In our approach we define an analogue of the partial sums of the Fourier series with the help of the Dirichlet kernel using the newly defined weighted metric integral. We derive error bounds for these approximants. As a consequence, we prove that the sequence of the partial sums converges pointwisely in the Hausdorff metric to the values of the approximated set-valued function at its points of continuity, or to a certain set described in terms of the metric selections of the approximated multifunction at a point of discontinuity. Our error bounds are obtained with the help of the new notions of one-sided local moduli and quasi-moduli of continuity which we discuss more generally for functions with values in metric spaces.

AbstractA simple multi-physical system for the potential flow of a fluid through a shroud, in which a mechanical component, like a turbine vane, is placed, is modeled mathematically. We then consider a multi-criteria shape optimization problem, where the shape of the component is allowed to vary under a certain set of second-order Hölder continuous differentiable transformations of a baseline shape with boundary of the same continuity class. As objective functions, we consider a simple loss model for the fluid dynamical efficiency and the probability of failure of the component due to repeated application of loads that stem from the fluid’s static pressure. For this multi-physical system, it is shown that, under certain conditions, the Pareto front is maximal in the sense that the Pareto front of the feasible set coincides with the Pareto front of its closure. We also show that the set of all optimal forms with respect to scalarization techniques deforms continuously (in the Hausdorff metric) with respect to preference parameters.

This work proposes the concept of uncorrelation for fuzzy random variables, which is weaker than independence. For the sequence of uncorrelated fuzzy variables, weak and strong law of large numbers are studied under the uniform Hausdorff metric d H ∞ . The results generalize the law of large numbers for independent fuzzy random variables.

In this paper, we study the existence of fixed point of the φ-weak contraction mapping in the complete partial metric space for multivalued mapping. Distance calculations are performed using Hausdorff metric. The result obtained in this paper is an extension of similar result for single valued mapping.

In this paper, we characterize Borel $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}$-fields of the set of all fuzzy numbers endowed with different metrics. The main result is that the Borel $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}$-fields with respect to all known separable metrics are identical. This Borel field is the Borel $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}$-field making all level cut functions of fuzzy mappings from any measurable space to the fuzzy number space measurable with respect to the Hausdorff metric on the cut sets. The relation between the Borel $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}$-field with respect to the supremum metric $d_{\infty }$ is also demonstrated. We prove that the Borel field is induced by a separable and complete metric. A global characterization of measurability of fuzzy-valued functions is given via the main result. Applications to fuzzy-valued integrals are given, and an approximation method is presented for integrals of fuzzy-valued functions. Finally, an example is given to illustrate the applications of these results in economics. This example shows that the results in this paper are basic to the theory of fuzzy-valued functions, such as the fuzzy version of Lebesgue-like integrals of fuzzy-valued functions, and are useful in applied fields.

Abstract. A set in a metric space is called a Čebyšev set if it has a unique “nearest neighbour” to each point of the space. In this paper we generalize this notion, defining a set to be Čebyšev relative to another set if every point in the second set has a unique “nearest neighbour” in the first. We are interested in Čebyšev sets in some hyperspaces over Rn, endowed with the Hausdorff metric, mainly the hyperspaces of compact sets, compact convex sets, and strictly convex compact sets. We present some new classes of Čebyšev and relatively Čebyšev sets in various hyperspaces. In particular, we show that certain nested families of sets are Čebyšev. As these families are characterized purely in terms of containment,without reference to the semi-linear structure of the underlyingmetric space, their properties differ markedly from those of known Čebyšev sets.
