Recent developments in understanding the influence of the nucleus on deep-inelastic structure functions, the EMC effect, are reviewed. A new data base which expresses ratios of structure functions in terms of the Bjorken variable xA = AQ2/(2MA q0) is presented. Information about two-nucleon short-range correlations (SRC) from experiments is also discussed and the remarkable linear relation between SRC and the EMC effect is reviewed. A convolution model that relates the underlying source of the EMC effect to modification of either the mean-field nucleons or SRC nucleons is presented. It is shown that both approaches are equally successful in describing the current EMC data.

We find that moments of structure functions can easily distinguish between rescaling and Fermi-smearing models of structure functions. Data seem to support the rescaling models, but more accurate experiments with more data at large x are required to fix on some model.

In this work we discuss the EMC effect on the nucleon structure functions in nuclear matter, using a simple approximation to the relativistic Faddeev description of the nucleon in the framework of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. We adopt a stable nuclear matter equation of state, calculated in the NJL model, which incorporates confinement effects phenomenologically so as to avoid unphysical thresholds for the decay into quarks. We will compare our results for the EMC ratio in nuclear matter in the NJL model with the parametrized fits to the experimental data.
