AbstractThe study has established the main regularities of a fatigue failure of offshore gas steel pipes installed using S-lay and J-lay methods.We have numerically analyzed the influence of preliminary deformation on the fatigue life of 09Mn2Si steel at different amplitudes of cyclic loading. The results have revealed the regularities of formation and development of a fatigue crack in 17Mn1Si steel after 40 years of underground operation. The quantitative analysis describes the regularities of occurrence and growth of fatigue cracks in the presence of a stress concentration.

Fatigue life is known to be dependent on the surface properties of the material. Surface roughness provokes local stress concentration and cause crack initiation even at minute cyclic loads. In laser powder bed fusion, the as-built surfaces show variable roughness depending on the orientation of the specimens with respect to the build plate. In order to analyse the effect of build angle on surface properties, flat tensile specimens were produced from an AlSi10Mg alloy in a Concept Laser M2 Cusing machine. Seven specimens were arranged from flat to perpendicular with respect to the build plate at 15° intervals. The as-built surface topography of each specimen was characterised by white light interferometry. Two methods for calculating the stress concentration factor for high cycle fatigue simulation were developed. The presence of subsurface porosity was a crucial factor in expanding the stress concentration as demonstrated by finite element analysis.

Plastic strain of structures having stress concentration is estimated by using the simplified method or the finite element elastic solutions. As the simplified methods used in codes and standards, we can cite Neuber’s formula in the work by American Society of Mechanical Engineers (1995, “Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,” ASME-Code, Section 3, Division 1, Subsection NH) and by Neuber (1961, “Theory of Stress Concentration for Shear Strained Prismatic Bodies With Arbitrary Nonlinear Stress-Strain Law,” ASME, J. Appl. Mech., 28, pp.544–550) and elastic follow-up procedure in the work by Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers [2005, “Rules on Design and Construction for Nuclear Power Plants, 2005, Division 2: Fast Breeder Reactor” (in Japanese)]. Also, we will cite stress redistribution locus (SRL) method recently proposed as the other simplified method in the work by Shimakawa et al. [2002, “Creep-Fatigue Life Evaluation Based on Stress Redistribution Locus (SRL) Method,” JPVRC Symposium 2002, JPVRC/EPERC/JPVRC Joint Workshop sponsored by JPVRC, Tokyo, Japan, pp. 87–95] ad by High Pressure Institute of Japan [2005, “Creep-Fatigue Life Evaluation Scheme for Ferritic Component at Elevated Temperature,” HPIS C 107 TR 2005 (in Japanese)]. In the present paper, inelastic finite element analysis of perforated plate, whose stress concentration is about 2.2–2.5, is carried out, and stress and strain locus in inelastic range by the detailed finite element solutions is investigated to compare accuracy of the simplified methods. As strain-controlled loading conditions, monotonic loading, cyclic loading, and cyclic loading having hold time in tension under strain-controlled loading are assumed. The inelastic strain affects significantly life evaluation of fatigue and creep-fatigue failure modes, and the stress and strain locus is discussed from the detailed inelastic finite element solutions.

There is limited research reported on the effect of cyclic loading on cement-based repair materials as conducting such tests is time consuming. To overcome this issue, this study utilized a novel loading regime consisting of cycle groups with increasing stress amplitude to accelerate the test process. The Palmgren-Minder rule was used to estimate the fatigue life of repaired specimens. Specimens repaired with Mix M (cementitious repair mortar), which was estimated to have the highest 2-million-cycle fatigue endurance limit (77.4%), showed the longest fatigue life (95,991 cycles) during the cyclic loading test, the highest slant, and splitting bond strength among all repair mixes. The estimated two-million cycle fatigue endurance limit of Mix S (70.8%) was very similar to that was reported in literature (71%) using the traditional loading method. This study confirms the usefulness of Palmgren-Minder rule on estimating the fatigue life of repaired specimens. Additionally, the use of the novel loading regime showed the benefit of shortening the test process while producing results similar to those from using traditional loading methods. To improve the prediction accuracy, future research is required to modify the failure criteria to accommodate specimens that may not fail even when the average flexural strength is met.

The thread connection’s root fillet radius of 0.038″ size is the greatest weakness of the API NC type joints and thread. During the slimehole drilling, especially in the deep and ultra-deep gas well, its stress concentration factor and notch sensitivity factor are very high A novel thread connection design (TM) of a drilling tool is proposed to decrease the fatigue failure of the slimehole drilling tool in the deep and the ultra-deep gas well in the Tarim oilfield China. The novelty in the TM thread structure is, reducing the threads per inch, extending the distance from the last engaged thread to the external shoulder of the pin and adding three threads to the conventional connection. The novel thread connection will improve the slimehole drilling tool’s anti-fatigue life due to its improved elasticity and rigidity. Furthermore, the TM can transfer the maximum stress at the connection root to the loaded surface, which can effectively lower the fatigue notch’s sensitivity coefficient. In this paper, the finite element method (FEM) is applied to carry out the detailed comparative analysis of the TM with existing thread connection NC38, TX60 and TH90. The TM has the lowest stress concentration factor and fatigue notch sensitivity coefficient, so its anti-fatigue life is the highest. In addition, TM is manufactured and is tested at Tarim oilfield in China.

Aluminium alloys are promising candidates for energy-and cost-efficient components in automotive and aerospace industries, due to their excellent strength-to-weight ratio and relatively low cost compared to titanium alloys. As modern cast processing and post-processing, e.g. hot isostatic pressing, result in decreased frequency and size of defects, the weakest link depends on microstructural characteristics, e.g. secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS), Si eutectic morphology and α-Al solid solution hardness. Hereby, fatigue investigations of the effect of the microstructure characteristics on the cyclic stress-strain behaviour as well as fatigue mechanisms in the low cycle and high cycle fatigue regime are performed. For this purpose, samples of the aluminium cast alloy EN AC-AlSi7Mg0.3 with different Si eutectic morphology and α-Al solid solution hardness were investigated. To compare the monotonic and cyclic stress-strain curves, quasistatic tensile tests and incremental step tests were performed on two microstructure conditions. The results show that the cyclic loading leads to a hardening of the material compared to monotonic loading. Based on damage parameter Woehler curves, it is possible to predict the damage progression and fatigue life for monotonic and cyclic loading in hypo-eutectic Al-Si-Mg cast alloys by one power law.
