A broth medium which provided for optimum growth of Yersinia enterocolitica was formulated. In this medium Y. enterocolitica grew best at pH 7.6–7.9 and 32 °C with a generation time of 33–39 min depending upon the strain. Examination of various chemicals as potential selective agents in an agar medium showed a high tolerance for surface-active agents, but cetrimide, 4-nitrophenol, potassium tellurite, and sodium azide were inhibitory at very low concentrations. Irgasan was tolerated at concentrations inhibitory to some other Enterobacteriaceae. Minimum inhibitory concentrations for 57 antibacterial agents tested against 18 strains suggested that carbenicillin, novobiocin, and SCE-129 (cefsulodin) might serve as useful agents for selective isolation of Y. enterocolitica.

Many types of cells show permeability increases to ions and to various uncharged molecules when exposed to surface-active agents (surfactants). Nonionic surfactants are less effective than ionic surfactants in increasing permeability and in depolarizing nerve and muscle cells. In the present experiments the strength of isometric twitch responses of directly stimulated frog sartorius muscles was measured. Ionic surfactants generally produced an irreversible decrease in the twitch response, whereas nonionic surfactants (at equimolar concentrations) had little effect. Aerosol OT conditioned muscles so that curare or neostigmine appeared to produce a decrease in the twitch tension of directly stimulated fibers. Possibly the Aerosol OT treatment increased the permeability of the conducting membrane, allowing curare and neostigmine to interact with the acetylcholine system proposed by Nachmansohn. The above observations could be accounted for by increases in permeability caused by the ionic surfactants. Two observations suggested additional actions of ionic surfactants: low concentrations of cetyltrimethylammonium produced a reversible decrease in twitch tension; low concentrations of anionic surfactants caused an increase in contractile tension.

P. 68-74.The efficiency of oil-displacing and biocidal properties of the developed composite mixes of water-soluble polymer – polyacrylamide and some surface-active agents was studied. On the model setups, simulating core - collector samples, the oil extrating coefficients were determined for a particular oil field taking into account the chemical compatibility of oil-displacing agents with the horizon fluids. Antimicrobial effectiveness of the synthesized compound - 1-butoxy-3-oxazolidine methoxybutane in the composition of M-8 lubricating oil and Az-5 emulsion was revealed. The following developed compositions - Grotan-OX + Biocide B in the ratio of 1:1 and 1:3 (wt.). Their antimicrobial properties in the similar conditions were studied. Some synergistic action is observed at combination of these components, which leads to improved biocidal properties. It was shown that the presence in the composition of Grotan-OX reagent both individually or in combination with biocide at low concentrations (0.5 wt.%) significantly improves its oil-displasing abilities (87%) and at the same time gives effective biocidal properties.
