Differential cross-sections for the elastic and inelastic scattering of [Formula: see text]-particles had been measured at the energy of 48.8[Formula: see text]MeV with excitation of low-lying states of the [Formula: see text] nucleus. The data for transitions to the ground [Formula: see text] and excited [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] states relating to the ground state band were analyzed in the framework of the optical model and the coupled-channel method based on the rotational model. It is shown that the analysis is sensitive not only to the magnitude, but also to the sign of the quadrupole and hexadecapole deformations. The extracted values of the parameters [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are in good agreement with the results of other experiments on the scattering of protons, [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]-particles and correspond to the data known from the electron scattering and Coulomb excitation.

Double charge exchange (DCE) reactions could provide experimentally driven information about nuclear matrix elements of interest in the context of neutrinoless double-β decay. To achieve this goal, a detailed description of the reaction mechanism is mandatory. This requires the full characterization of the initial and final-state interactions, which are poorly known for many of the projectile-target systems involved in future DCE studies. Among these, we intend to study the 20Ne + 130Te and 18O + 116Sn systems at 15.3 AMeV, which are particularly relevant due to their connection with the 130Te→130Xe and 116Cd→116Sn double-β decays. We measure the elastic and inelastic scattering cross-section angular distributions and compare them with theoretical calculations performed in the optical model, one-step distorted wave Born approximation, and coupled-channel approaches using the São Paulo double-folding optical potential. A good description of the experimental data in the whole explored range of transferred momenta is obtained provided that couplings with the 21+ states of the projectile and target are explicitly included within the coupled-channel approach. These results are relevant also in the analysis of other quasi-elastic reaction channels in these systems, in which the same couplings should be included.

We have measured the differential cross-sections for the elastic and inelastic scattering of [Formula: see text]-particles on [Formula: see text]C target at the isochronous cyclotron U-150 M INP Republic of Kazakhstan. The beam energies of [Formula: see text]-particles were 29[Formula: see text]MeV and 50[Formula: see text]MeV. As a result of research we obtained new experimental data for the [Formula: see text] + [Formula: see text]C elastic scattering and inelastic one leading to the 3.68 ([Formula: see text]), 6.86 ([Formula: see text]) and 7.5 ([Formula: see text])[Formula: see text]MeV excited states of [Formula: see text]C nucleus. The experimental results on elastic scattering were analyzed within the framework of the optical model using Woods–Saxon potential and the double folding one. The theoretical calculations for the concerned excited states were performed using the coupled channel (CC) method. The optimal deformation parameters for the excited states of [Formula: see text]C nucleus were extracted.

The theory of multiple scattering has been worked out by Groves and comparisons have been made between predicted and observed signals for thick specimens observed in a STEM under conditions where phase contrast effects are unimportant. Independent measurements of the collection efficiencies of the two STEM detectors, calculations of the ratio σe/σi = R, where σe, σi are the total cross sections for elastic and inelastic scattering respectively, and a model of the unknown mass distribution are needed for these comparisons. In this paper an extension of this work will be described which allows the determination of the required efficiencies, R, and the unknown mass distribution from the data without additional measurements or models. Essential to the analysis is the fact that in a STEM two or more signal measurements can be made simultaneously at each image point.
